I'm a 49 year old truck driver that's been driving HGV for over 25 years.
Originally from Penarth but now live in Cardiff.
Recently had a serious accident when a ladder slipped and I fell approx 25 feet and landed on the concrete driveway........ several major surgeries later, 18 months of recovery, no longer able to lift or do 'hand ball', lost my best friend during this time when I was forced to put my beautiful Border Collie 'Lilly' to sleep due to her having a tumour, and I'm heading back into the world of HGV's.
All things considered it's been a pretty rough 18 months - with no money coming in as I wasn't able to work!
So.....seen a lot of HGV drivers getting onto TH-cam with videos, reviews etc and figured I'd have a go at it - not saying I'll be any good but I'm gonna have a go ......... have patience with me, I'm learning this stuff as I go along!

Nextbase GW522 Dash Cam Part 2
มุมมอง 1583 ปีที่แล้ว
Same as the Tom Tom - this is NOT a paid review, all the comments and opinions/observations are mine and mine alone! Just a quick-ish ‘What’s in the box?’ review of the dash cam. In 2 parts (you’ll see why later!) Will add another review in a couple of weeks once I’ve used it for a bit to see how I get on with it.

Tom Tom Go Expert - ‘What’s in the box?’ review
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This is NOT a paid review and all the thoughts and opinions are my own and do not refer to any person or companies instructions or statements!! So, my new Tom Tom Go Expert arrived and I’m doing a ‘What’s in the box?’ review just to show my first thoughts and impressions. Thanks to #truckerjenko for his review that - after a lot of my own research - helped me decide which one to go for 👍🏻
Sticking with ma Garmin Dezil never let me down
Im glad you happy with it, my exper plust was absolutely rubbish, first six destinations couldn't find them, so wasn't impressed..in the end got pissed off and sent it back for a refund. . Voice control intermittent. Too many tight turns. Toi many failed destinations Too many problems with sucker mount falling apart. Support from tomtom awful.. No coordination button. £400 quid not worth it . Wish i did a true full view b4 i sent it back .. don't waste your money..
Good review.
Nothing beats Garmin Dezel . TomTom has too many flaws 😮
Never had one so can’t comment on that. My TomTom has been great
yeah but once youve been once, them you know anyway
Hi I don't get the bridge heights on screen
I’m not sure they come up on screen on a route. I enter my trailer height when I’m entering my address/post code and the TomTom routes around any low bridges.
Nice one Dave. Great video. I've subscribed to your channel :)
Thanks for the command the subscribe 👍🏻 I’ve subscribed you yours 😉
The only problem I've with my older tomtom 6200 is it not had ant traffic for 6 weeks but I've paid for the year no way of contacting tomtom its getting on my nerves as I'm a night driver & catch all the road closures
McKillop Way, cray Rd as a 5t limit done the same thing 1st I went there😂😂
Hi Dave, did you say at the start of this video that you plug into the 24v socket in the lorry. Can it be used in the 24v as the 12v in my unit is not working just now.
Yes mate, mine is plugged into 24v. Has also been used in 12v so ok in either.
@@HGVDave Thanks Dave, didn’t know that. Thanks again and take care. 👍
How often does it get you lost
In all honesty it has failed me just once in nearly 18 months. So, overall, the best nav I have ever used in over 20 years of HGV driving
@HGV Dave great I'm thinking of going on the coaches do you reckon it will be good at that too thank you for the reply
@@gareth838 it probably would do…it has settings allowing you to enter vehicle height, width, weight etc so should do just fine. Not sure if it will select bus only routes though - would have to check on TomTom website for that. Maybe they do a coach specific nav??
Hello mate , I passed my class 1 on Friday , any tips on getting started ?
Firstly congratulations on passing mate! The best tip I could say is - no matter what anyone says, customer, boss, anyone - never rush! Always take your time and be safe. A good HGV sat nav, decent gloves and a flask of coffee and you can handle anything.
@@HGVDave thanks man 👍🏻
Hi I have TomTom export 7”. How we record route in this device. My previous TomTom (6200) had the recording option.
Would you recommend this I’m stuck between tomtom and Garmin 610
I can’t comment on the Garmin Sat nav as not had one - they do look good! That was the alternative I was considering at the time I bought my TomTom. I am very happy with mine. I bought it in a recommendation from a truck driving friend and it has served me well
I found the information in this video quite useful, so thank you.
Glad I could help, thanks for the nice response 👍🏻
Hi Dave. Do you have to go through the weights and dims screen every time you plana route?
Yes. But if everything stays the same with your weight/height etc then it’s just tapping ok twice.
@@HGVDave Thanks Dave
Just started my first hgv job today & my new boss recomends i get a sat nav. As I will be doing ADR the dangerous goods part is great. I just learnt today a lot of tunnels have ADR restrictions. BTW I used to work for Coca Cola Enterprises in Southampton
I’ve been using it for a year now and it has helped me every day! Back to tramping starting this week and already it has saved me hours after rerouting around an accident
@Nws Sounds good but they are designed for companies to use and are installed in the vehicle - not much use to a driver that may be in different vehicles! I’ve been using my TomTom Go Expert for over a year now and overall it has been excellent - from central London to out in the sticks it has always given me a few options and plenty of warnings about bridges etc As long as you program it and use it correctly it is a great truck sat nav! Not had to reverse out of any situations as it hasn’t put me in any in 14 months
@Nws At first it seemed to me like possibly an useful comment, but then I looked on their website and they don't sell "web fleet devices". And then I thought I really doubt that they castrate their professional series devices/versions, just to sell the actual "good stuff" only to the companies. Sounds just really strange, or really unlikely. Because that would mean millions of professional truckers having a navigator that is not working overall well (and that would mean having most of truckers not like Tomtom navigation). Not to mention that if this was so, on the forums etc the community would have known four years now that "if you're a professional trucker, don't bother with the Go Professional series". Or if say companies' navigation devices were doing a better job at guiding the truckers - again, it would've been common knowledge on forums and among truckers for a long time now.
@Nws Plus web fleet doesn't seem to be a device really, rather a subscription/login. I think it's more likely that you just have this one route where Go Expert doesn't work properly, and you just assumed it works like this differently in any scenario/for any route. I don't know, what you wrote just doesn't sound very plausible.
@Nws Maybe you're right, I don't know either way. But the problem with buying such device from eBay or whatnot, is that 1) it seems one needs to have a subscription (login and password) and even if the seller gives it who knows maybe after some time this credentials will stop working, and 2) I bet there are problems with map updating/traffic/speedcam services too, things won't work properly. I mean of it is so, TomTom probably does everything so that only companies could use this their (better) service, and that companies are prohibited to sell the devices and credentials to privates, etc. But it is an interesting piece of information that you've provided, I'll see if it's discussed on forums somewhere, so that to understand all the nuances. And you're saying you bought it from a private person, they just gave you the credentials, and you've been using it without problems for years now (with functioning map updating, traffic and speedcams)? Or does your device have certain limitations maybe?
Hi Dave. How did you charge it first time overnight ? Do you use computer USB port to charge it ?
I charged it in an adapter plug from the wall socket - same as any USB plug in adapter like you get with iPhone etc. since then it is always powered in the truck. I have noticed it doesn’t seem to hold much charge and does need to be plugged in to power socket all the time. First time overnight though was vid a plug adapter in house
hi guys. can you tell me why i can't use the traffic service with my go expert connected with iphone 13? it doesnt work anymore after 5 minutes.
No idea mate sorry. mine is working fine. All I can suggest is get on to TomTom customer service and advise them of the fault
@@HGVDave i will see what to do cause that is impossible to talking with someone from tomtom crew. thanks for your answear
@@pascaltureau6037 most of the time I’d agree but they did answer a query I had about my TomTom not connecting to my iPhone - wasn’t the answer I wanted but I know why I can’t connect at least
@@HGVDave i can connect it with a samsung but not with apple one. never mind
is it a class 10 memory card ???
I think so. Basically I bought the one Nextbase recommended for use in it so was a bit more expensive but if something goes wrong they can’t blame an inferior memory card!
Good review on the tomtom 👍👍👍👍Just a quick question...what dashcam have you got ????
Thanks. I’m using the Nextbase 520. Pretty good cam, think I’ve got a review on here somewhere. It or the iPhone I use does have connection issues when trying to use live view etc but as a dash cam it is great once all connected up as it should be
I am from llanelli mate and if you set it for kidwelly, its takes you up fiveroads and through the reboeth road lane which is way too tight and bendy for an artic truck
You can set it to avoid B roads I think in the settings before you plan a trip. Or afterwards you can select to find alternative route and pick from the ones it comes up with
@@HGVDave im not sure why it avoids the sandy road up to pwll like the plague, pretty sure there are no restrictions on that road. I will have to look into avoiding B roads. Nice one pal
Theres a tom tom video about pairing to an iphone
Is it free to update maps in the further?
Not really sure to be honest, I know it’s free at the moment but I’ve only had mine since September last year
I don’t know if you get the same problem but mine sometimes freezes in my last location. So I’ll be driving down the the M4 and it will direct me from just say my last location was the M5. But the curser just stays still and don’t move.
I haven’t had that happen to mine. Maybe it needs an update? Sorry, I don’t know with that one - you could go on TomTom website and send a query so maybe they might tell you how to fix it.
Tarda un rato en colocarse bien
How to put multi post code thanks
Way I do it is to plan journey then once its live click three dots on right hand side and search for next post code then keep doing that until all are in then you can choose the order you want to put them in in your route.
How to ad multiple post code, thanks
How many places can the Tom Tom save,
Not sure to be honest, I currently have about 30+ saved and save any new place so will increase.
Is it available for U.S truckers?
I honestly have no idea but if Tom Tom is available in the US I’m sure there would be a version of this available for you guys
@@HGVDave Thank you
I'm using dzel 580 Garmin letting me down a lot is the go expert worth every penny as a tramper I need the best kit
I’ve been using it for 6 months now and - despite the rate occasional hiccup- it has not done me wrong! It’s always worth looking at the route and zooming in to make sure it’s the best route though! I travel to London a lot and it does try to take me off M25 at J2 and through towns when 1a and main roads is better. I’m happy with it overall though, great bit of HGV kit
@@HGVDave perfect mate I might get one
We had 1 unit at Argos restricted to 51mph. On a run from Heywood to Kettering i was loosing 45 minutes. Saturday i was getting £19\h so every Saturday i was getting £40 more because of slow unit 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 All of the units should be restricted to 35mph
You should be able to adjust that in the settings, I’ve set mine at 52 so I know if my truck is restricted to 52 then I’ll be on time but if my truck is restricted to 56 then I’ll be early
@@HGVDave why would you want to do it quickly? 🤷🏻♂️
@@Phen0mable not a case of wanting to do it quickly, I like to know I will get there on time or - preferably- early. That way I have time to relax a bit and have a coffee. I don’t rush
😂😂😂👍
Dave how are you finding the go expert after a few months use is the traffic and travel updates good on it with it being tethered to your iPhone Bluetooth do you have problems at all with it dropping out or is the connection good . I’m considering buying one was hoping Tomtom would release the 4g sim version with built in lifetime speed cameras and traffic and travel which was supposed to happen end of last year but seems like they have cancelled it for the time being due to the semi conductor shortage hopefully working on a new solution
I’m finding it - overall - a great sat nav. It gas it’s little issues like routing me to a motorway junction that isn’t open yet or directing me a very long way (12 miles) around a 7.5t restriction that doesn’t exist - luckily I knew the rout was ok otherwise a literally 2 mile run would have been 14 miles long!!! It is annoying that the app doesn’t pair up with my iPhone so I can’t get the benefits of my tom tom but - those niggles aside - it hasn’t let me down routing through central London, avoiding traffic hold ups etc. It does advise me of traffic/roadworks on my route and I have it set where I can choose to reroute to avoid it or just go through. So overall I am happy with it. Updating does take time while out and about but at home on WiFi it’s very quick so I tend to wait to update until I’m home.
@@HGVDave ok thanks for the reply
Also Dave just want to find out if your on the Home Screen of the tomtom and it’s showing the map of the uk and you zoom in scan along roads does it show if their are weight restriction or low bridges on them roads I currently have the go professional 6250 and it doesn’t show that when you scan in and out of the map . I know on the new go expert it shows signed restriction when on your route when it’s routing mode
@@chrisbaxter6706 It doesn’t as far as I can see. When you set a route it identifies weight and height restrictions though
Hey Dave! Could you check if your TomTom supports the Russian language? Thanks
Not sure. It has one that could be (resembles the lettering on your name)! I can take a pic of it and send it to you to check if you want to send me your e-mail address or add me on FB HGV Dave and message me on there then I can send pics to you without e-mail.
No good tomtom useless in centre London so many issues my old garmin is better then this 400
I can’t comment on the 400 as this is a completely different device - TomTom Go Expert for HGV. I’m in and around London regularly myself and it has always routed me correctly. Maybe your device needs an update?
Have you managed to sort the my drive app connection? Ive got this sat nav and a iPhone and I can’t connect my phone using the app to the sat nav either
No I haven’t. Even after contacting TomTom customer service I still haven’t been able to get it to work. Their final comment, which made me give up, was that I don’t need them to pair/connect to use the device! Pretty poor customer service really as that was a feature advertised that I liked! Overall though - as a sat nav for HGV - I still like it, has always-so far- taken me the right way to the right place! It does have its moments when it’ll route you a really long way around so I always check the route before I get going but this has usually been sorted by cancelling the route and searching again
Just bought one will.not connect to my Samsung s9
I have an iPhone so can’t really help sorry. I do know you need to have bluetooth and mobile wifi (personal hotspot on iPhone) active and tethered to the Tom Tom device. All I could suggest is to go on TomTom website, they have walkthrough guides and videos to help. My iPhone will not connect to the My Drive app which was disappointing
recovery no easy from a serious injury..10 years after mine im still struggling..just started my hgv journey..hope your back on track soon 👍
Thanks James, hope things get better for you too. I’m back doing what I love but I definitely feel the difference with the odd painful twinges that I never used to have! Not just from getting old but several major surgeries have left me not able to do heavy manual or lifting work now, not too bad otherwise 😉
Do you have any issues on the M25 S after Clacket Lane services it up pops up with a 7.5t weight limit on the motorway?
I’ve not had that problem happen on mine. Have you tried updating it so that it has latest software etc? I keep mine tethered to my bluetooth and phone Wifi all the time so it automatically updates. I’d contact TomTom and report the issue with them so they can possibly offer a solution Sorry to not be any help.
So, was it any good in use?
I’d say it had ben brilliant in daily use. It has found all post codes and street names I’ve searched for, routed me correctly 99% of the time - it has routed me to a motorway junction that is there but not yet open which is the only reason it’s 99%! Screen is large & easy to read. It will not connect to the app with my iPhone and TomTom customer services answer is basically you don’t need to connect to the app to use the device! Not very helpful. Shame too as it means I can’t access the spoken text messages feature which is the only part of the app I was interested in anyway. Overall I’d rate this as a 4.5/5 - excellent sat nav, great features just a shame it can’t pair to the app with mu iPhone 👍🏻
