Exploring Former Teachers Collage, Apartments.
(This building was on my wish list of places to do but was always sealed up until I seen a TikTok with people exploring it. As soon as I found out it was open we had to get in and explore it as I had already seen photos on the inside on urbexcentral.
This was a very interesting explore as I was with another New Zealand TH-cam explorer and a couple of his friends. Omega and Levi have chatted online many times but Strazer who is from Australia I had never met before and only seen him on a couple of Omega's videos so it was good to met him.

The Peterborough Centre has historical and social significance as it was built as the Teachers Training College. The Christchurch Teachers College began as a department of the Christchurch Normal School, which was on the corner of Montreal Street and Kilmore Street, and was established in 1873. During the early 1920s a purpose built building was planned and the foundation stone was laid in 1924. The main building was completed by 1927 with the women's block and craft lecture room being completed by 1930.
The building was built to acommodate up to 300 students. Among the well-known New Zealanders who trained at the Peterborough Street site are former Prime Ministers, Bill Rowling and Jenny Shipley, as well as artists Rata Lovell-Smith and Grahame Sydney. By the 1960s the Training College was outgrowing its site, moving to a new purpose built campus in Ilam in 1978. In 1987 the Arts Centre Trust Board leased the building from the owners, Landcorp Property Ltd. Until 1993 The Peterborough Centre, as it was then called, became an extension of the Arts Centre and was sub-leased to a variety of tenants including the Christchurch College of Tailoring and Design, Christchurch Drama Centre and the Schizophrenia Fellowship.
In 1997 the building was purchased by developer Robert Brown who converted the former Teachers' College building into 37 apartments and renamed it The Peterborough. The building was owned by the individual tenants of the apartments. Following the Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 the building has been sold to new owners. They have stabilised the structure and intend to redevelop the building.

Great explore. The underground car park was full of water after the quakes
Oh wow yeah was a little bit of water down there.
Used to be a Blue Jean Cuisine then it became 205 Yakitori Lounge. It was a Very fancy bar before the EQ's and won bar of the year in 2008. Remember going there numerous times
Yeah have seen photos of it when it was 205 Yakitori Lounge. Looked so nice in there.
I was at those batches the other day they have gotten so bad now there's hardly anything left of them
Plan to get back out this way sometime and go around the track to the cave again and the spot down the stair case.
@ExploringwithMark if it's the one I'm thinking of, it's locked I went there about 2 weeks ago. Not sure if there's another way down to it.
Cave cannot be locked as no fence. Harris Bay Cave. The one with gate in fence also haha. dam they locked it aye mmmm. sure theirs ways around that.
@ExploringwithMark the caves not, but the other one is. I didn't want to try get round the fence with the massive drop into the sea lol
But that's the fun part lol. You will only fall once. :)
Ohh shit lots of paperwork scattered be records more than likely from clients should of been removed ages ago
Noticed the Gate on alleyway wide open yesterday so maybe they doing something around the back or collecting the files.
@@ExploringwithMark love you work mate excellent footage and documenting fantastic thanks for sharing all your vids i are working through em n are sharing to try boost ya ratings
@@TheBlackstag1 Thank you. Will have some small abandoned explores out over the next 2 months.
What the equiptment ,data recorders of some kind or geogear mabe ,any idea im probly wrong
Was a couple of ring lasers in there. University of Canterbury was using it before it got closed up after earthquakes.
Are you still on facebook ? Or are you on Instagram
Facebook yeah. Instagram na I just made a account to send a message to someone on there. lol.
Wow that place is stuck in the 60s! Congratulations on appearing in The Press.
Yeah. Thanks. :)
I remember going to the optometrist here in the late 1980s.
Oh wow. That's a long time ago.
Where was this?
Christchurch
@@ExploringwithMark Where in Christchurch

Thank you. Just watched.
Thank you for this. Believe it or not, my family used to stay in those cabins for our holidays over 40 years ago. They were in better shape then.
@@danieltaft6864 oh wow that would have been a cool spot to stay.
Are these tunnel marked on a map?
Yeah just google Big Hill Tunnel
Shall we get rid of the libraries art galleries parks and swimming pools as well TTM. What a dork!
Na they are fine fore some people. Me personal don't use them apart from parks. Libraries I just search online for things.
Waste of ratepayers money!
Bit like the cathedral.

Its amazing the amount of documentation left behind. I went to an eye specialist as a kid there in the 1960s and I see his name is still on one of the doors although partly rubbed out. I also had surgery on an infected toe there in the 1970s. I wonder if my eye surgery notes are still there and I wonder if the same video was ever taken in the months after the earthquake? I remember there was a story about a guy who the council or govt paid to go and photograph inside all the ruins of the buildings not long after the earthquake but I was told there was a dispute over the payment and he never handed the photos he took over.
Oh wow. Yeah I have been told there is glass eyes in here also but they are long gone. would not be surprised if you files still in there some of them files are very old. oh that is interesting about that guy doing the photos that would have been cool as.
@@ExploringwithMark I did a Google search of the specialists name and the 2 others. There is a website with the history of eye surgery in NZ with them all on it. My specialist was Harry Jenner Wales and the other 2 doctors are Tony Sandston and James Hay named on the same door.
oh cool will look it up.
Still haven't been there, think it's all locked up again
Yeah I haven't been pass lately but last time I did was a board on a angle over the side door. Something that is new Antonio Halls has new signs all along the fence from the CCC as over 3 days ago.
@@ExploringwithMark thats a bit random. Wonder if it's about to get knocked down
Maybe or part of it maybe.
Loved the video, keep up the great work
Thanks, will do!
Ironically I walked past the new Harley Chambers on Friday, which is the old police station on St Aspash. There was only eight cars in the carpark and every single one was a Land Rover, Discovery, Range Rover or a variation. Even if you google the building, carpark photo has seven of them in the park also.
oh will have to have a look now.
Love this..!! Almost like I don’t need to visit here now, but that basement needs exploring one day 🎉🔥
Yeah the basement has been drained before but flooded again. Be cool so see whats down there but no way am I going in that nasty water lol.
Hey mark have you done the small hoon hay valley cave

Well thats what I would call a proper hike! Pretty waterfalls make it worth it no doubt. Great to see so many Fantails.
Was a very nice walk but had some very muddy parts. Always love to see fantails.
Terowongan itu butuh penerangan😅
I Have more tunnel videos coming soon. Most of these tunnels are old Railway ones converted into walking and cycling tracks.
Where is it now?
Kaiapoi, NZ
Nice. Get the thing under cover, please!
Wish they would. when its on 1 of 3 in NZ it should be under cover.
Swing It!!!!!!
I did lol.
13:33 breaks my heart
Yeah pretty sad to see.
Only just seen this what the heck ahha looks insane! Where in Kaikoura is this ? I want to see that . Probably would run through instead of walk because of how twisted that looks
Look up Disused rail tunnels, South Island. is a wiki with list.
Certainly would have been a nice house. Its obviously been abandoned for a very long time which makes you wonder why.
Yeah I only happened to find it as I was in the area looking at another thing.
Where’s Karen woodmonster 😂
Gone.
Bonus points if you can find the cottage Pauline stayed in with the Hulmes in 1953.
Ohhhhh. Will have to look into that.
@@ExploringwithMark I'm %100 sure it's still there.
Found a bit of info about what happened but nothing about cottage location yet.
@@ExploringwithMark There is a picture of the cottage in a book, you have to work back from there. Keep up the vids. I'm enjoying them.
What stunning falls and forest!
Yeah I need to get out to more places like this. :)
@@ExploringwithMark 🙋 same!
Feel like I have been there when I was a kid, it's somewhere down south ae.
Yeah. :)
Do you reckon a drone is worth it ?
Hell yeah. Winter sales help me also lol got for a little cheaper. Will come in handy for a couple of waterfalls I want to drone that I done think you can walk to. But I'm up for a bush bash to try lol.
Have you seen the article that the fuel tunnels are now guarded and they are trying very hard to stop people going in
Yes need then news thing and 2 different posts about it on Facebook news groups. They already have new signs all along the fence line now. lol.

@@ExploringwithMark what Facebook group is it?
Star News, Remembering Christchurch, urban explorers nz. Signs I seen them Yesterday when I was out for a drive.
just be careful if ya use the tracking feature as was tracking a bike ride and it shot off into a tree by itself lol Nice shots mate
Good to know. Not used tracking yet. Want to learn the way-points option also.
One of my favourite waterfalls. We had the pleasure of meeting the 2 gentlemen maintaining the track (and a film crew was present - ended up being in the clip somehow) - great guys!
Oh wow. That's cool as. So what movie can we see you in. :)
@@ExploringwithMark We got back home from the southern trip and were surprised when several people said to me "we saw you on the news!". While we did have the camera pointed in our general direction sometimes, I didn't think they would use it! I was just taking some photos with my camera. The Catlins area is fantastic - I particularly enjoyed staying in Curio Bay and sitting on the beach watching the dolphins play in the surf.
Oh cool as. Yeah love the Catlins, I still have to go to Cathedral Caves and Jack's Blowhole.
Beautiful place
It really is!
Don't eat those particular mushrooms 😅
LOL good thing I had mushrooms of all sorts haha
Love these pocket rockets! Got a 'like new' 99 model for a deal. So basic in design, cable drum brakes up front, cable disk brake at the rear. Air cooled 2 stroke 6 speed manual. It just ticks all the right boxes for an afternoon of fun kicking up some dust
Yeah so simple and so much fun. :)
Is that that big white building you can see from the water ?
Yip
