This charming list D piece from the 2015 Edition became a student favourite. It's rich harmonies and soothing melody line was perfect for teens. Care is taken to project the melody line and balance the chords to create that rich texture. Pedal is used to blend and connect. Resolutions of chords are always slipped into gently.
The middle section can have slightly more momentum. Here I take a bit of license with the timing in the transition back to section A.
The tempo marking is "with feeling" a quarter note at 80-88. I feel it in 2 halves.
Love this luscious piece💕💕.

This Allegro third movement has some nice passage work in the right hand. Blink and it's over!! I like to spin through some notes more quickly to add character especially in mm. 17-20. It's easy enough to memorize in an afternoon. Clementi has some much loved teaching pieces in his Op. 36.

As the left hand has most of the melodic content, controlling and diminishing the right hand top repeated note is a task. Treating the second note in each grouping on top as lesser in a rebound motion creates a better effect. Care is taken to soften any resolution chords and surprising harmonic shifts. Watch out for the accidentals in this one as there is a passage that demands close attention ...

This was a new addition to the 2022 edition of the Celebration Series Repertoire book level 4. My students have loved learning it due to the textures created with the pedal and repetitive note patterns. They mostly want to stick to the beat though being too shy to add rubato, or end up racing through many of the notes in the figurative sections (mm.15-22 for example). To be effective in renderi...

This piece has a ton of chracter. It seems to have a playful character and a bit of showmanship especially with the hand over hand sections. You can breath a bit musically between sections. The triplet turn figures remain light and melodic. I've heard recordings with the landing note made short, but I like to give it full lyrical value. All students of piano will learn this charming piece which was once attributed to Bach. Momentum across the bar line helps to drive the cheerful dance. Repeated quarters are detached and light. I chose to lead with the RH melody in the balance, but a performer can bring out the left eighth note passages. Counterpoint exists here, but in this case the left hand role is supportive like a cello wh...

Singing with our pinky finger is so very important. Although th...

It's hard to get a good recording with a puppy playing just outside your sightline. This serious and yet playful prelude takes off with a bang. This piece is marked con dolcezza and seems to me like a mini aria. It is written in 3/4 time with triplet broken chords in the left on each beat. There are some rhythmic challenges in fitting in the melodic ornaments to such a back drop. The right hand melody is sung with expression and momentum building the shape of each phrase. This piece has been a favourite of many students since I began teaching in the 80s. Most students perform it with a much slower tempo, and it comes out fine in many tempos. I myself, as a professor, before the students of the art of playing the piano, was greatly influenced by your performance. You proved that the technique cannot be separated from the interpretation of a piano piece. Captivating an audience and evoking real emotion in a piano performance requires more than just mastering the notes. Playing with musical subtleties is an essential skill that contributes to the depth and expression of each piece, and you have learned all these lessons in one piano performance. I’ve played this since I was a child, ( the complete original version, as here) and once it’s in muscle memory, there is a great temptation to play it at this speed. I hear Beethoven’s playfulness in this piece, after all he had just fallen in love with a 16 year old girl. It’s as if she made him feel young again, and he’s trying to express a light hearted airy innocence and purity, almost like a gaiety he thought he’d lost. Obviously there is the dark broody section, where he starts to feel insecure and negative, but generally, I feel this is Beethoven feeling playful and in love, and young again. Once you know the piece well, I think it’s hard to see it as a slow or sad piece. It might sound nice played in a slow sad way, but it doesn’t feel authentic, from a performers point of view. I can’t imagine Beethoven writing a piece with this ebb and flow, and lightness, if he wanted to write a piece to be played as Lang Lang plays it. It’s also obvious that anyone who knows the piece, would be able to play it fast or slow, heavy or light, sad or happy, but I honestly feel a movement and driving force in the music which you have to crush if you play it slowly. After all, isn’t a Bagatelle a kind of dance music , historically? I would need to check on that, but if it is, it’s obvious Valentina isn’t doing it justice, and has accidentally or deliberately missed the point.

    Very very well played. You know, they found in Beethoven's sketchbooks several bars of Mozart's Giovanni when Don Giovanni kills the Commendatore. Lower down on the page, Beethoven penned the first bars of Moonlight Sonata, one semitone higher! Holy cow, Moonlight Sonata is a dirge!!! So, you can't get very far playing like it represents a moonlit scene over Lake Lucerne in Switzerland... I believe that if you understand what Beethoven expected this piece to represent, you will find yourself playing it like Joanne because it is somber and its "Tah-Dah-Dah Tah-Dah-Dah Tah-Dah-Dah has to just march on and on like the sad martial piece that it is.

    • @vitaeipsofacto
      @vitaeipsofacto 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, thanks for that. I see it as very serious and sad too. It is as if the moonlight means farewell forever, a person leaving never to be seen again. The mid section diminished seventh chords are a sign of the person struggling to stay alive. The grim reaper wins though and the person in the end says farewell to the world as they know it. They consider their life's final chapter and the book gently closes to a peaceful silence. Imagination is fascinating!!
