About the channel:
How 2 Pixel (originally known as Bridgeport's Brightest Lights) is a channel with lots of tutorials explaining how to use RGB pixels to make an incredible light show synced with music. You can find tutorials about pixels themselves, their controllers, hardware, software, behind-the-scenes, and many more things related to running a light show with pixels on this channel. So if you run a light show or are looking to run one, then How 2 Pixel is the place to learn how to pixelize it!
About me:
My name is Nicholas Burlarley, I'm 16, and I've been running a light show every Christmas and Halloween season since 2020 (technically since 2019). I program all the lights myself and pay for most of them by mowing lawns during the summer.

Falcon Pixel Port Sharing with Receivers and Expansions 101
มุมมอง 1K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
In today's video, we're taking a look at how pixel port sharing works on Falcon controllers and why we need to know about it. Pixel port sharing is all about how a controller divides up all the pixels it can run across any onboard ports, receivers, and/or expansions attached to the controller. It may seem a little complicated, but it's extremely important to know about when adding expansions or...

Hi Nick great Video, but i am having problems after i put in the info for the ETH0. FPP asking for a reboot and after i do this it cannot connect via the wifi, not sure if I am missing something?
Do you have a video on how to set up a mega tree with 2 receivers i tried to daisy chain it but either half light up or it lights up backwards. I can make it work if i run 2 cat 5 cables. When i drag the tree on the visualizer it takes up 17-24 automatically and it doesn't let me set up a B option for it
I feel for you. I'm just north of Tampa, FL. I wasn't planning on back to back hurricanes this year, let alone losing power and being stuck unable to go anywhere. I'm thinking Halloween is going to be canceled this year for me, due to circumstances wayyy beyond my control. My 10 ft wide by 3 ft deep by 16 foot tall scary tree stump I was building is just not going to make it. I'm two weeks behind and there's not enough hours in the day to get it built and painted. Oh well, there's always next year.
Thanks for sharing. Best of luck getting everything complete.
Your videos have inspired us to do our own Halloween show this year. Hope the weather clears up for you soon! Can't wait to see your show
Thank you. Trying to go from LOR to XLights. This cleared up what a lot of the effects do for me.
You should try the shader effects! Just click the download button and choose one, my favorite is the black cherry cosmos one!
I don’t get it my Windows is connected to Colorlight Panel with RJ45 and it doesn’t find it I downloaded LEDVISION and tried X Lights but no luck,I look up on TH-cam but everybody shows you after install
Do you remember what size you made the Show Logo you put on the SD card?
I got a F16-v2r and was actually feeling good about it until I saw this video 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you!
another great video, have just ordered my first Falcon board which is this one, I may reach out to get it setup.. LOL .. thanks for you info question where do you get adapter for power supply?
Hey buddy I wanted to let you know I'll be doing my first show this year, from 1 youtube to another thanks for all your content YOU make the BEST pixel guides on the internet!
Can you do a video how to use the raspberry pie for a show . What do you do after setting it up . Do u still use the xlights or you put the sequence on a SD card.
Once you set the pi up, you take the sequence files you created in Xlights and put them on the pi to run. I have a tutorial that's all about how to set up the pi with FPP on it if you'd like to check it out th-cam.com/video/pjJMpwaXGTQ/w-d-xo.html
This guy is awesome! So entertaining, seriously! Well done! and Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you for creating these videos on receivers....they're incredibly helpful! If you're using two SRX1 receivers chained together and they're assigned ports 13-16, does that mean that you can no longer use ports 13-16 on the board of the F16vv4?
Are you connecting the receivers to one of the built-in receiver outputs on the controller? If you are, then yes ports 13-16 will be disabled on the board and the signal will instead be sent to the receivers.
How do you run the falcon player on the raspberry pi and the controller for the pixels
Really great job explaining this controller and a very informative video!! Thank you!!
Hi, I’ve been unable to get the fog machine to work dmx-wise :( I followed the steps in this and your other dmx tutorial and it still doesn’t seem to work. Is there a specific mode the fog machine has to be set to to accept dmx?
It depends on your fog machine since they are all different. Which fog machine do you have?
Hi, can you do a video review on the PiCap V2 I was thinking of using this to create a smaller set up with this controller, cheers
Perhaps, maybe sometime in the future I can.
Brilliant, thank you!!
Is it possible to program bracelets individually so that if the bracelet was assigned to a specific I could put a design to them?
Sort of but it's a little difficult. The bracelets can be programmed in zones and the bracelets will only light up if their zone is the one that receives the signal. However, we cannot change which zones the bracelets are set up to listen to, we have to ask the manufactures to do it for us before we purchase them. Additionally, I think (but I may be wrong) you need a transmitter for each individual zone. I tried controlling 2 zones off of one transmitter but the bracelets couldn't receive the signal since there was so much data being sent out too fast from the transmitter.
Nice. I bet you could get away with using 2x3’s if you want to go cheaper. I always thought those plastic pieces were expensive but if you can just keep using the same pieces every year I guess it’s worth it. Just keep the pixels attached. I wanted to do arches around the plastic picket fence in my front yard but I’ll have to go with custom lengths to fit in between the vertical sections.
Awesome! Ill be watching! Thank you!
I have this Colorlight Board hooked up to two panels that’s hooked up to Raspberry Pi 4 thru RJ45 cable then on a Windows Computer I’m running FPP with LEDVision but no cursor is on panel what am I missing(waiting on new card
So sorry for the late response, I've been away on vacation. Have you found a solution to your problem yet? I will say I'm not the biggest expert with panels and there's a lot of different steps that could easily be messed up to cause the problem. I only know the basics to get it working and run it in a light show with FPP

great video, been watching your collection very helpful. one newbie question which end of a string of lights in node (light) one? Just to sure i don't start at wrong end and have to redo it. Thanks again
No problem! The male end of the strand is the beginning. If you have ray wu type pixel connectors, it's the end that has the little screw part to connect the two and the little water ring. You can also normally look inside the pixels and it'll say "DI" for data in on the side of the pixel where data comes in, and it might say "DO" for data out on the other side.
Excellent information. Thank you very much.
Nice job with the new series! Alot of thought about what kind of props people want to use. It might be nice to have a link to one of your other vids regarding sequences or wiring to understand how the chain is going to light up and work in the show later. Also, drill a small hole thru your pipe (1/8" maybe) at the ends and use either zip ties, wire, a screw or a cotter pin to secure the end of the pipe to the board. That will keep it from popping out of the base. I'm in the process of teaching myself how to weld. I'm building a large set piece for this year's Halloween display. I'll try to put something up once it's done
That drill bit is called a spade bit. The trademarked name that people use is Speedbor.
Thank you for that! Yea I looked it up after making this video and found the name 😂
Thanks for all of the great info, but.....the EXACT middle is ABOUT 5 1/2 inches? an EXACT measurement is never ABOUT a measurement
Thanks for pointing that out to me. In the next episodes I'll make sure to better word everything and if I say exact measurement, I'll say the exact measurement!
Ohhhh snaapppp.... IDK what happened but I drifted off for a second but I suddenly found myself hitting the subscribe button.... and moments later I drifted off again only to find myself hitting the like button! LOL.... smoooooooth....
Hahaha isn't it so annoying when that happens? But thank you very much! Glad the videos are helping you out!
You're awesome. The way you explain is priceless. Even English is not my mother lenguaje i can understand. Gracias, Merci
Just found your channel. I am late to the party obviously.
FANTASTIC SERIES. I have been watching a bunch of your content repeatedly. You have a great style and present useful information without dragging it out and lot of B.S. I REALLY appreciate that. I personally don't care how long the content is as long as it is not fluff and cliff hangers. Just finished putting together a couple of small controller setups, a Raspberry Pi 4 show controller running FFP, assembling a dedicated show network and just finished the tutorial on Xlights. Have started the first sequence and started the episode on the Xlights effects as a continuation of working the sequence. I am stilling the design phase for our display and I have been thinking about arches and that style of prop and now this gets posted. It is like you are reading my mind. Dang! Had to watch this before continuing the rest of the saga. LOL Do you know about how many pixels are used in beginning setups? I realize it is all relative to the size of the project. Just wondering if there a general number that it takes to produce a decent show for the first year of doing this? Also is there a minimum number of pixels that can used to produce a good show? Got to get back to watch this video and then back to the others. Thanks Nick. Wish you and yours the best.
Thank you! I'm really glad the videos have been useful! My opinion is any amount of lights is better then no lights. So if you can only get around 100 pixels for your first show, that's fine. If you can get 10,000, that's also fine. My first pixel show only had 400 something lights and I thought it was pretty cool because it was new, you don't need all pixels to make a great display. What I did is also add in some regular Christmas lights that year and blow ups. Sure, I couldn't program them with the show but it helped light up the empty spots. So do whatever you can and I'm sure your neighborhood will still love it no matter the size!
@@How2Pixel as far as the lighting is concerned, At the moment I have 400 RGB pixels and 9 RGB 10 watt flood lights and 6 RGBW 10W flood lights. Oh ya and some Govee Permanent (not the pro version) under the edge of the roof lights (about 150 ft spaced at like 18inches apart and some Govee Flood lights and some Govee and curtain Lights. I had a show last year that was reactive to mucis that was decent. I want more control over the sequencing. Funny how that happens... Go figure. LOL. I may break down and order another 400 to maybe 600 RGB pixels and call it done for this year. Idk. I can see where I need 3000 just to get things moving in a great direction and then add another 3000... and so on and so on and so... LOL Did the math and I can go total Clark Griswold with only about 20,000 pixels... and then I will have to address the yard... LOL anyway ... maybe someday... FYI the Govee curtain lights are a matrix with seed RGB LEDs spaced at 3 inches horizontal and vertical. they are decent space fillers and have some animation/effects that look decent but it is kinda a set it and forget it kind of thing. Will probably use a combination of everything tradition, Govee and new pixels setup this year and setup for more RBG pixels for next. BTW I was able to program a very basic test sequence and render it. Now I just have to figure out how to setup the rest of the lights on the pixel controller and upload the test to the Raspberry pi FFP and see if I can it all to work. Thanks for your previous replies!
B E G I N N E R S ---> Do yourself a HUGE favor. WATCH THE ENTIRE VIDEO FIRST before attempting to work in Xlights by following along step by step. I messed up by watching a section and then attempting to "replicate" that section on my computer. The big mess up was that after I got to the sequencing section and I selected a music track, relevant to my project, and applied an effect, relevant to my project, to a timing section. Everything worked as instructed. Then my OCD kicked in. I wanted to modify the effect and I got ahead of myself as I knew what I wanted the effect to do and and spent a lot of time, seriously... a... lot... of... time..., trying to figure out how to make it do one little thing. I finally figured it out so I resumed the video. A few minutes and a couple of sections later he covered exactly what I wanted to know in the video. D A N G ! ! ! I felt like a total dufus. As I am a complete beginner the instructions in this video appear to be fairly well thought out and complete for someone just starting out. If only I had watched the whole video first I could have saved time. Watched the rest of the video and thought I might take a moment to write this comment as maybe it would help someone. Nick is great at explaining this stuff and I have been locked onto this channel going through step by step how to setup and create a basic light show. I wish everyone good luck in setting up their show and big thanks to Nick for creating this content.
Great video!! Thanks for sharing
Great job! Very informative
I'm really enjoying your videos you have inspired me to start my first Christmas light show thank you for all you do. 😊
I have 5 of the medium arches using 3/4 pex for the arch into 1/2" pvc fittings and pipe for the base. You just need to heat up the end of the pex to get it to fit into the pvc, i used a blow drier but a heat gun would work well too.
Awesome!
If you have a switch local to the show player and controller like shown at 6:10 then it will switch all of the packets between the two devices and your router will not need to play a role unless one of the devices attempts to reach the gateway, or the internet. This is one of the main reasons Layer 2 switches exist. In this setup, the rest of your home network will not be impacted by the high data throughput between the player and controller.
This video is awesome thank you! Do you happen to know how to make edits to multiple effects at once? Lets say I had 30 seconds of shockwave on two different props and I wanted all of there colors changed, how can i do this all at once. Right now I have to click on each individual effect to make the change, thank you for your help!
Glad the video was useful! Yes you can bulk edit multiple effects! You need to select all the effects you want to change first by holding down control then clicking each of them. After that, you can go into the palette and select which colors you want the effects to have. After you do that, click the update button that should be right around the color palette area. It'll ask "are you sure you want to update all these effects colors" or something like that, then you can click yes. You can also do the same with the update button in the effect settings window too! Hope that helps!
@@How2Pixel Thats what I was missing, the update button, thank you!!!!
Lastly, do you have any tips on how to get your projector to turn on automatically? My projector is hooked up to my Pi but wont turn on without the remote, any way around this or need a new projector? Thank you again!
So where my pi is located it gets a weaker to no wifi signal where my laptop in the same location is fine. When I'm outside trying to make show adjustments I can't as the pi is not getting enough signal. Then I have to open the garage door, take the laptop into the garage to make the changes then come back out, close the garage door to see the show. Is there something with the pi's address that is making it have a weaker wifi signal then the laptop? Would changing the ip address of the pi help with a stronger wifi signal? Is there another way to accomplish what I'm trying to do? I run projection mapping shows so the pi and projector are in an enclosed box with plexiglass window facing house and the back wall/door of the enclosure is open when I'm making my changes. There is a schedule set in fpp which always seems to work on the pi even though when I'm out there trying to make changes it never has enough wifi power....baffles me!!!
Also I'm saying pi doesn't have enough signal but what I'm actually talking about is the wifi meter on fpp which I'm assuming is the pi ....or is that meter just for FPP?
So first off, the wifi meter you see on FPP is what the actual signal strength is the PI is getting. FPP is just software on the pi so it's not like it's its own device. Second, changing the IP address won't effect anything unless you have another router or maybe a router extender that's closer to the PI. If you do, then you can connect the PI to that instead. Usually the PIs have pretty decent range so I'm surprised it's strength is worse then your laptop. What PI do you have? Like a 3 or a 4 or something else?
@@How2Pixel 4
@@How2Pixel it's the version that's encased in a keyboard
Dumb question,So I'm assuming if I'm trying to connect to a controller I can't access it if my computer does not have a ethernet port and only a wifi computer
No that is not true. When you connect to the controller the signal goes from your computer, to your router, then either directly to your controller or too your pi then your controller if you have a raspberry pi set up. So, when the signal first goes to the router, it can do that either by ethernet or by the wifi in your controller. Hope that helps!
