The comment regarding the mountains falling on us.. comes initially from the book of Isaiah, which talks about the Return and the Restoration of the Righteous Remnant of Israel. In that day the idolators will beg the mountains to fall upon them to shield them from the Glory of the L-rd. Hosea, ironically also mentions this as well-- as both Isaiah and Hosea were contemporaries.. Isaiah was called to prophesy to Judah (who would remain and would not be taken by Assyria and they would keep their integrity and covenant, and actually named his children for that promise, his sons, She'aryashuv and Emmanuel, being a testament to this promise and his wife was a prophetess), .while Hosea's mission was to the Northern Kingdom of Israel (who would be taken away into captivity by Assyria .. and actually too named children for that doom; his wife being a prostitute.. a contrast). And he too predicted with the kingdom of Israel's return to the Land, (which meant the tribes weren't /aren't "lost", just dispersed.. even if their link to the land and the Torah were) Idolatry would be eradicated and the idolators too would beg the mountains to fall on them to shield them from the glory of the L-rd. Then Ezekiel /Zechariah would add to this imagery by promising that the Kingdoms would be united as one (which almost happened during Isaiah's lifetime, but alas, did not) with one ruler and one code of law (Torah) and that restoration wouldn't just be for the Jewish People, but for the whole world.. there would finally be peace, healing and prosperity. Ironically, during the siege of the Northern Kingdom, many many northerners fled into the Kingdom of Judah and Jerusalem's population nearly tripled. Judah would remain semi-intact until the Babylonian invasion/conquest about 70-100 years later. Sorry for the missive, but this is the history of that concept mentioned in Luke which was an interpolation of the verses.
