Want a Unique Sound? Design Your Own Scale in Push & Live
The new tuning systems in Live 12 (and the MicroTuner in Live 11 Suite) are amazing fun in combination with Push 1, Push 2 and Ableton Push 3.
This is an excerpt from the 35-hour-long Push 3 Bible. This video is contained in a specific section (2 hours long) on this topic in the Push 3 Bible, found here: wrkshp.thinkific.com/courses/Ableton-Push-3-Bible-Definitive-Guide
The video is mostly at or around intermediate level and focusses mostly on some key ideas and general exploration. Later videos in the course go into detail on Scales, including creative challenges which can be taken on in the Push 3 Bible Community.
This mode works on Push 2 and Push 1 as well.
Let me know your thoughts on Tuning, and any questions you might have on the course.

      Hey Britt! Essentially yes! Using the MicroTuner device we can do a lot of this tuning directly form Push itself, even in Standalone (if you have Live Suite 11 and up or M4L) To load custom tuning files in Live we have to do that in Live itself for now. I would suggest trying out the MicroTuner device to get a taste of the pretty wild possibilities here. Let us know how you get on!

    1:35 Note the way in which he casually says "I'll just make this clip twice as long"... he reaches up, hits a button, and twiddles a knob WITHOUT EXPLAINING which button and why, what knob and why, and how this works. This type of presumption will KILL THE EFFECTIVENESS of a tutorial or lesson. If you're a beginner, he just completely blew your mind and stranded you, thinking "wait?!? What??? Make the clip twice is long? That sounds useful, which knob was it? How did he do that? WAIT, WHAT???" and so on. See... this is NOT what I want to see if I'm thinking of spending $299.00 on a tutorial. No, this does not bode well at all.

      @@PololiNuskil thanks for the feedback. While I did mention the price of Push as being relevant, actually it really isn't. The value of the course is in the transformation that it offers, and whether that's valuable to you or anyone else (or not). The value comes in the form of many things, but a big part is 10 years of knowledge, of trying things, of finding workaround, workflows, frustrations and joys. The Push Bible saves an insane amount of time saved. Of course time isn't worth the same world-wide or to each individual. There is a sale once or twice a year however. Do join the mailing list if you'd like to be made aware of that. Cheers 🙏

    • @AndriSoren
      @AndriSoren ปีที่แล้ว

      These kind of glitches are now very rare. There is still the odd bug or two but I’ve watched them fix and fine tune the software/hardware at a crazy rate. I think it’s also partly due to the really high level of sensitivity of the pads and the apparently rather custom nature of the tech. At first I was concerned but now I’m not worried at all having seen the pace of refinement. I should add I was also somewhat underwhelmed and even intimidated by MPE. In a short time I’ve started to love it rather deeply. For anyone into expression / texture / effect / spatial modulation (ie me!) it’s really exciting.

    • @Mikas_Emil
      @Mikas_Emil ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndriSoren It really IS exciting. I have looked very much into the Osmose which also sounds and looks so expressive and interesting. Its a tough choice. I really hoped the Push 3 would be a bit cheaper than what they are selling it for. Do you know if there will come any sort of Arrangement view on the Push? Thanks for doing great videos, Andri!

    • @AndriSoren
      @AndriSoren ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mikas_Emil thank you so much! So it’s a really interesting topic. I ordered an osmose in the pre order launch for a huge discount. Was so excited and carried away by the beauty of the idea and a handful of the presets / demos I heard. Once I got it however I quickly met the issues inherent to it which are that ideally we should have some proficiency on piano keys, and my skills in that sense are very rusty - I need to relearn playing just the basic piano keys, it’s been that long. The second is the actual application of using piano keys to add MPE is, I find, difficult. I feel like I can more easily add nuance to push 3’s pads, on a higher number of notes/fingers. That said, I am more proficient and comfortable with Push like pads than with piano keys. That’s just obviously an issue for me but might be the case for others. I suppose next to consider is workflow and which platforms we want to commit time to and invest in. For ten years since Push came out I’ve never bought a single piece of gear (except my uad sound card that I love). This was because I appreciate the focus and “limitations” of using push and Live. It was therefore a surprise when I found myself in possession of an osmose. Now that I have push 3 I just don’t see myself investing in the osmose anymore. The main thing I like about it is that if I use it then I’m not thinking about making a song in live, I’m just noodling. What I want to say (or pose as a question) is; how do we like to work and what gear (or lack of) will help us practice and improve on our workflow, from sketch to completion? For me, it’s still Push. I’d love to see improvements to arranging ideas on push of course. There are some easy wins available, and some perhaps slightly more challenging but I reckon powerful ideas that I discussed with the Push team, and these are on their radar. I have no idea of if or when we can expect them to appear however. What I do think makes sense however is that Push 3 really cements (this piece of) hardware at the core of what Ableton does. I think and hope that this means there is a chance that push user’s needs will start to influence the direction of Live’s development even more. This is pure speculation on my part but to me it makes sense.

    • @AndriSoren
      @AndriSoren ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mikas_Emil oh and one last thought on price. It is a very significant sum. But, we do have the option to start with the intro model. Much more importantly however is that time is ultimately our most precious, impossible to replace resource in this life. Time not creating, making and expressing ourselves is truly a huge cost. I remember the pain and trepidation with which I bought Live 8 in 2010. I also remember how it was one of the best investments I ever made. The same for Push 1. I believe Push 3 will be the same, and will “pay for itself” in the joy it can bring. Again, it’s a large amount of money for anyone anywhere in the world. I do believe that compared to other options it is competitive and Push and Live as a “creative world” have a huge long term value for those who can afford it. That said, what could be bought for similar money back when I started with computer music in 1994 was, well, much much less powerful. That all said. I could keep going with Push 2 or even 1 for a long time and be happy and productive. Ultimately what matters most is our creative energy and time I believe, and those are both such precious things.
