Skiing Independence Pass on Opening Weekend (and whitewater rafting attempt), GoPro 4k, Aspen, Co
Made it into Aspen en route to Durango and had the chance to have a day up at Independence Pass, one of the first days that it was open. Great experience coming from New England and a brief glimpse into the large swaths of backcountry terrain Colorado has to offer. Glad I was able to hitchhike for a second run before my car came! Thanks Reywas for joining me.

Little late to the upload from weeks of traveling and getting settled in in Colorado for the summer. Fun day I was able to squeeze in before the end of Junior year of college.
Oakes + Hillman's Highway | May 3rd, 2024 | Tuckerman Ravine

A quick trip up to Mount Washington to explore Oakes Gulf for the first time. Unfortunately, our line was undermined and we didn't have enough time to hit Main Gully/Airplane Bowl. Despite this, it was an amazing experience to explore new terrain and Hillman's skied great. More to come.

We made the trip up to Sugarloaf to capture the once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse from the summit. Being on a mountain illuminated a 360-degree sunset that was surreal to say the least, and unlike anything I've ever experienced. This video is a brief attempt to encapsulate that moment, and made the at times standstill traffic on the way out well worth it. I would like to thank Jeff Dickers...

With the snow melting quickly, I made the decision to drive up north in hopes of chasing snow and taking some final turns of the 2022-2023 ski season.
I Skied Mount Washington and Bridge Jumped in the Same Day.

This was quite a day. Quite exhausting but what has been a thought for more than 3 months became a reality, and I couldn't be more excited with how it came out. A slightly different style of video but hopefully a good transition to more summer content, coming soon.
Great Gulf + East Snowfields | May 13th, 2023

Started up the Cog, then hit the East Snowfields, where the weather opened up and we were greeted by open skies. After traversing to the Great Gulf, we finished the day skiing patch by patch down until the snow ran out. Another great day in the mountains.

Great day on the hill from a week back, Snowfields were a bit firm but Right Gully and The Sherb shaped up nicely. Couldn't have asked for better weather, hoping the snowpack can handle the warm weather coming up. More to come in what will hopefully be a long spring.

Started the day off the Backside Snowfields flowing into the Chutes, then 2 runs on King Pine in Brackett before heading on a bit of an excursion to a rarely skied zone. Beautiful East Coast dust on crust and luckily made it back for practice. Great day to skip class. More to come.

So sad to see the lousy snow cover so early in the year.
How much vert was it. Seems like you got a long run out of it.
I believe it is around 2.5k vert from the summit.
So cool. We went up a few years ago but only made it to where the glades begin. We were both out of shape that day, hoping to go back and snowboard from the summit. The glades are groomed by the Granite Backcountry Alliance which is super cool

Sick video! You mentioned in the comments how extreme chute/elevator shaft was now put in bounds, and I’m wondering how you got down there. I’ve skied the backside a fair few times but never been down that way before. And also, did you go out behind Bullwinkles to get into the west mtn. bowl or did you take a different route, ive always wanted to get in there
The entrance to the chutes are right below the final steep pitch of the backside, if you look closely in the video you can see signs subtly pointing the entrances out. As for the bowl, I cut into the woods off Timberline. Thanks for the comment!

When I skiied Sugarloaf back in the 70's I'd gaze longingly up at the snowfields and wish I'd have the chance to ski there. It never happened, and certainly never will now. Your video is a great look at what it's like to actually ski the snowfields. Thanks so much for posting.
Thank you for your comment! The aim of the video was to showcase Sugarloaf's offerings when conditions permit, and I'm glad it was able to do justice to the unique experience.
How long did the whole hike take you?
Took about 57 minutes from the top of King Pine and about 20 minutes to descend.

I have done this route. Not for the faint of heart at all. Watching your shot of elevator shaft brought me back to the moment. You may be the only person I know who has video of it.

Dude, you are insane. Those backside runs, especially Ball and Chain looked ridiculous. I've skied Colorado EX terrain, and that looked harder than some of those runs. Also, you got super lucky with the snow. It looked amazing. I hope I ride that kind of terrain as well as you some time.
Backside has a lot to offer when conditions are in, so when we got a bit of snow I had to skip class and get after it. Just trying to showcase the what the east coast can offer when the snow is good. More to come hopefully...

You can ski directly to King Pine if you cut soon enough, depending on how far east you cut.

Hello when you say backside does that mean facing west toward Carribou Valley road? I’ve wondered about hiking the Appalachian Trail , camping and backcountry snowboarding there. Thanks
The backside generally refers to the southeast facing ridge off the summit of Sugarloaf. The Appalachian trail ascends the west side across the ravine and to the summit, and there is also some amazing terrain in there if conditions allow. Not sure the feasibility of winter camping but definitely a remote backcountry area.
@@CamStathos thanks. Ever since Covid the AT parking lot between Carrabassett Valley and Stratton has been getting snow plowed . I’ve backpacked into Bigelow and have seen tracks leading up to the Crocker mountains and backside Sugarloaf zone. That means people are hiking up there too and it’s tracked out and camping and possibly backcountry riding is feasible. I plan on going up there hopefully this winter and if it seems right, possibly have a snowboard system to go there in the future. Thanks for the help
I was wondering if you were going to hit those cliffs. I've hiked that trail in the summer and it's pretty crazy getting up those rocks.
This is why east coast skiers are better than any west coast skiers. We are more technical because of the sparse snow conditions at times.
And ice. When I first skied Alta in Utah, and stepped on to a steep black diamond, I was expecting all crust and ice. It was so soft, getting an edge was a piece of cake.
You wish, lmao. Not even close. As if January or December isn’t low snow at west coast spots. I know no east coast skiers that could rip the forbidden zone at snowbird cirque or anything similar…
@@colter7300 That's just laughable. Many Olympic and World Cup skiers are from the East and you think they couldn't ski those spots? Bode Miller anybody? Julie Parisien? She started out on a little bump here in Maine for a ski mountain and was the top US skier. So many more to even bring up.
@@teleguy5699 I've had icy conditions at Snowbird. Its no where near what its like here on the east coast but both are challenging for different reasons. Trying to get into anything on the Curque as a snowboarder after its been skied out is more challenging than anything on the east coast. I think the gnarliest line I've rode was DJ tramline on the east. and out west the Pioneer ridge cliff area at Brighton, had some mandatory airs. I love the east coast and SLC specifically. Havent had a chance to ride the cascades but I think they would be next on my list. Colorado seems nice if you have money to live there.
