Motorized canoeing adventures
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 14 ก.พ. 2013
Motor canoeing adventures. Outdoor motorized canoeing trips.
My channel is made to help people that are interested in mounting a motor on a canoe. How they perform and handle.
I am pleased to help people with questions about size of motor.
Note: My outfit is a 17 foot Grumman canoe with a 5 HP Mercury motor on the back. It is a square stern canoe.
I have owned the canoe 50 years. The motor is a 2021 Mercury 4 stroke motor. Some of my earlier videos were made with a 4HP motor. But it was stolen a few years ago. So I went to a 5HP. It runs flat out at 12.5MPH. But mostly I run it about half to 3/4 throttle. I love to explore out of the way places. So, this outfit works great!!

Finding the perfect area to canoe. Iowa has a lot of great lakes to explore. I plan on finding them all.
Exploring with the motor

This area is very shallow. Only the canoe can make it in these places. This is what I like to do. Get in tight areas and see what I can find.
Giving the 5HP a workout.

In swift waters the canoe handled great! There isn't too many places I can't go with this outfit. As long as the water is flowing under 12 MPH, it can handle it just fine. And the good thing is I can go in 6 inches of water. Enjoy the adventures of me out in the craft I love the most. Thank you for watching and subscribing.

I wanted explore some areas that I don't get to much. It was a good day to work the motor. The water is high in most places. But I had to see it for myself.

Just showing what a motor on a canoe can do. As far as speed. I am on a lake with a 5mph speed limit. So, top end won't happen here.
Why I love canoes!!
มุมมอง 247หลายเดือนก่อน
This video is showing the tight places I can get with the canoe. I was going places that most people will never see. I love to explore areas that are out of the way. I enjoy being in places that people can't get to without a lot of work. It is amazing what you you can see in the wilderness. And with a canoe you see a lot more than flying by at 40 mph. Just seeing a leaf floating in the water. O...

A wonderful day to be out on the water. It was windy on the lake. The camera microphone was picking up a lot of wind noise. Hew house being built on the lake. And sail boats were out having fun. This is at Lake McBride in the great state of Iowa. The speed limit is 5mph. But it is a great lake to sail, kayak, rent boats and swim. It is close to Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. It takes me about 20 m...
Bad day to be in a canoe

The day started out warm and sunny. Then the clouds rolled in. But it was a great day to be out on the river. The water was up about 4 foot from normal. every day I can get out there is a good day.
River dam breaks.

How a motor handles on a canoe.

This video shows that a motor is great on a canoe. How it turns. How stable it is when mounted correctly. The lake I was on has a 5mph speed limit. SO I couldn't open it up.
Windy day on the lake
มุมมอง 925หลายเดือนก่อน
The wind was so bad on the lake today. It was hard to keep the camera steady. It was the first time I was able to take the canoe out in some time. The rivers are still very high, so I decided to go to my favorite lake. I hope you enjoy this short video.
How I get to the water.

Anchor setup
มุมมอง 2392 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the setup I use on both my canoe and kayak. It is easy to make and use. With this setup, you can position your canoe at any angle. This way you don't have to change of the way you face.
Preparing canoe

Just a little clip of how I make ready the canoe to head out on the water. I never leave the motor on the canoe. Too many thieves around Cedar Rapids. I had one stole. I am not going to loose another. The canoe is light enough to roll around the yard and hook it up to the car.

Lazy stream exploring day in the spring.
Another great adventure! I've finally got mine running pretty well. I wanted to get some footage yesterday but a rain storm came up and i had to high-tail it back to the ramp. The river right by my house is nice and deep so, once i get out into the channel away from the boat ramp, i use a tiller extension to sit more towards the front of the boat. Right turns are easy, but left turns are a little trickier trying to pull the tiller towards me and lean the opposite direction. Rivers getting kinda low upstream though and i banged my prop up on a shoal in a wide shallow, but i am learning so much :) Hopefully get some good shots from shore perspective this week.
We have some things in common. Your canoe is a Grumman and mine is a Grumman. (19') You have a 5hp Mercury outboard and I have a 5hp Mercury outboard. You ballast the front of your canoe to keep it level, increase wetted waterline and speed/power efficiency and I do the same with a 30-gallon water bladder in the front of mine. 😃
@markihde4381 That is great! You'll have to post a video about it. I have helped other folks with choosing a canoe setup. You should help people with answers for your outfit.
1:20 looks like the spot! Ralph i took my motor out for the first time and no lie, i dunked it! Less than 30s after putting it in gear, it came up off the transom and i dropped it to the bottom of a river. Some real nice folks helped me get it out. I took it home, changed the oil and gas, and got it running again. Only thing bruised was my ego, this time. 🤣Gonna try another voyage this week hopefully.
@rootwad wow!!! How the heck did it come off? I am glad you got it back. I lost my dad's ring. He got it when he got home from ww2. I have looked for it for 3 days. No luck. How deep was the water where the engine went down in? So, you never got a chance to see how it runs. Remember to break in the engine correctly. Keep me informed. Good luck 👍.
@@Ralphcanoeingadventures Gosh i hope you find that ring but don't be too hard on yourself about it. Keeping dad in your thoughts is the way to go :) The motor went down in about 5 feet of SWIFT, cold water. Some local folks really rescued me, one fella was able to get more traction and lifted it up off the riverbed. I made a donation to the local volunteer fire department in his name! But, the good news is, i got it running again, and was even able to take it out last night! I was able to do the first hour of breakin and got about 10mph out of it. Need to add more ballast and take the throttle up a little further next time :)
@rootwad Wow.. it sounds like your outfit and mine are going to be a match. I know you will love it. Mine goes 12.5 mph. The trick is getting the right amount of weight in the front. My water bladder works well. Good luck 👍
Another great day on the river i'd say! I took mine down to the Current River in the ozarks and tried to go upstream. I made it about a mile before the current was too much for my 55# trolling motor. I learned a lot that day, and ... i caved and ordered the 5hp merc four stroke - it'll be here before the weekend, god willin :)
@rootwad you will love it! That motor will handle about anything you want it to do. You'll have to keep me updated on the progress. You'll have to put a video on it when you get it set up. I don't know how to send you my email with out posting it on ut.
@@Ralphcanoeingadventures i promise i'll keep ya updated! I can't wait to get some footage on my channel, i've only gotten little tiny bits so far, need to stick them altogether 🤣
What kind of canoe is it
@zz4camaro69 Grumman. It on the side in most of my videos. 17ft
Maybe if you don't ride more out in the middle u wouldn't have hit it
@joricopittman1279 I was in the channel. If I would have been more out in the middle. I would have been on a large sand bar. In about 6 inches of water. I know this river and where the sand bars are. But logs move all the time.
@@Ralphcanoeingadventures ok cool.just be safe dude
Water dog for ballast!
All the stuff i've read says "A canoe is a displacement hull, and you can't exceed hull speed, you'll just swamp it". Meanwhile, it sure looks like these transom canoes can plane out just fine. I picked up my new canoe yesterday, and wouldn't you know it, it's raining cats and dogs here along with a flash flood on my most convenient river. I'll find SOMEWHERE to take it for a spin with the troller this weekend. Looks like you had a good one Ralph! Always look forward to more.
@rootwad As you can see. I add weight in front. I have gone out without weight and it is very tippy. The more of the bottom you have in the water. The better. I hope you shoot a video of your outfit and maiden voyage. You'll have a blast with it. 😉
How long is your canoe?
@@samhoustonpubliclandhunter5367 17ft. All the info is on my channel page.
Looked pretty smooth beaching that thing, man.
@@elstevobevo thanks. 5 decades of practice. I have only flipped it once. I was young and stupid.
Looks like a fun day on the water! I took my trolling canoe out on the Meramac river near my house just as an experiment yesterday, and it worked great! I wasn't sure we'd beat the current upstream but it was no problem at all. And even better news, my Square Stern canoe will be ready later this week! No outboard for it yet but i'm one step closer :D
That is awesome! I can't wait to see your setup. I took the gimbal out yesterday and tried it. It is a little shacky but a lot better than holding the camera. I have about 4 videos ready to post. Those were holding the camera. I hold some in reserve for posting in intervals.
Technically, you hit a log that was under water. You were not under water.
That's a good one 👍. I stand corrected.🙂
what is the brand of canoe?
Grumman, 17ft, square stern.
I am working on a 17ft square stern with a 4 HP Johnson. Thanks for the information. Hope to see you out there.
I would love to go canoeing with you. There isn't anyone around here that has a motor on their canoe.
Raw Power! 🤣
Well.....as much as you can get from a 5 🐎
Love it!
Well as much as you can muster from a 5 horse
I tried the new gimbal in the boat today. It was great. I did find that I won't be able to use the tripod sitting on the floor of the canoe. The motor vibration is too fast for the gimbal to handle.
Looks like you found some clear water. I'm headed out to the upper Eleven Point River this weekend. Water's probably gonna be a little muddy from the rains but we're blessed to have it this late in the summer. Gonna get an early start and hopefully see some eagles :)
That water is in a creek in the middle of Cedar Rapids. I am shocked it is always clean. Going to ser my grandkids tomorrow. I am anxious to try out the new gimbal. I have watched your videos so many times. Just seeing how steady it is.
@@Ralphcanoeingadventures Sounds like a blast! And yeah, hopefully i'll have some new videos for us this week!
That's mothing. The only time you need to start worrying is when you get 6 to 8 inches of water in the boat. I've ridden my motorized canoe in 4 to 5 foot waves.
I was on a lake in the Boundary Waters. It was like that. And no motor. It was a workout.
I know you probably provided a complete list of what your canoe is all about. Can you maybe provide a link of the video you created that describes your canoe? How long is your canoe?
Look in the description on my home page. If you have any questions after that, let me know.
That's a lot of water
What do you mean?
glad you had your head on a swivel there. any clue who owned that dam?
I think it was the Iowa DNR. But don't know for sure.
Any day on the water is a good day! I'm gonna head out tomorrow to try the Minn Kota 55lb on a side-mount for my canoe. Found a little no-wake lake not far from my base where i can hopefully learn the tricks without putting on too much of a show at the ramp 🤣
That is great. I got the gimbal yesterday. I have been practicing with it. I think it will really help. Thanks for telling me about it. I was looking on Google map to see there you are at. It's a 9+ hours. I think I'll chat on here instead. 🙂 You have to put a video on your trip tomorrow.
What kind of canoe do you have? How long is it? How wide is it? Also what size motor are you running? Is it 2-stroke or 4-stroke? And how many horsepower? I have an old 17 foot Grumman and I’m actually picking up a 17‘ michi-craft this Afternoon. Both are rated for 5 hp. I’m brand new to this so I’m just trying to learn as much as possible. -Hence all the questions lol. thanks for your time!
Forgot to mention both my 17 footers are aluminum
Look at the discussion on my channel. It says all
17ft square stern. stroke 5hp.
Nice drone work!
Learning every time I do one.
I like your channel. I wish our waters were that clear!
@@Ralphcanoeingadventures Thanks for stopping by! Let me know if you ever make it down to the Ozarks, i'll buy ya a coffee
I not only stopped by. I subscribed to your channel.
I ordered a gimbal for my 2 cameras. I liked the looks of your videos.
It would be good to include the location, lake, or river
Thanks. I will keep that in mind. All videos are in Iowa.
You don't look old to me just tired of paddling.
Thank you! I just came back from filming more stock videos. I am pooped. I need to get the kayak out. But its hard for me to get in and out of it. I have a closed kayak. I wish I had a open one. Take care. Have fun.
This is all the crack hit i can get while i wait to fix my tin canoe
What's wrong with it?
What is wrong with it? I'm glad I could entertain you while you wait. 🙂
Need a little 12V pump for your water bag, give it electric trim! 🤣Nice drone shots, too. I guess, do you mostly stick to the smaller lakes? i can't imagine it would be fun to hit wake from a big boat.
I have 2 pumps. They work just fine. Around here there are small lakes. I have taken the canoe where fast boats run. The canoe handles them quite good. Look up, Lake McBride in Iowa on Google map. A lot of my videos are there. I ❤️ that lake.
@@Ralphcanoeingadventures Nice, i'd love to see that! I'll have a trolling motor setup soon, i'm gonna cut my teeth on that in a small boring lake nearby and see how it goes. By the end of the summer i'll have a square stern & 6HP but i'm gonna work my way up to it.
Check out my video of wave riding. That shows big waves.
💕Wow💛💜💜💜💜💜💜💛💜
Watching your videos with interest as I'm 71 years old with a Grumman 15' square back canoe with a 3 1/2 hp Mercery outboard & 45 lbs thrust Minn Kota. I don't have a trailer or the space to house one so I transport canoe atop SUV. My wife can no longer place her end of the canoe atop the car so I've been using a Reese canoe loader which enables me to load it all by myself without to much trouble. I also have to use a dolly to transport canoe to water which works well but all this is a lot of extra bother. Your trailer is obviously much better and you can transport canoe with outboard mounted. I do have a ballast solution that may work better for you than the bladder. I have a few 5 gallon water jugs that when filled weight about 40 lbs each. I can handle the weight myself but can always reduce fill level and use more jugs. I fill them with tap water before leaving but you can also use lake water and their easy to empty when you are ready to return home. I set them on a thick bath towel in the canoe and they don't shift around. I also use an empty one for flotation in case of capsizing as the weight of the outboard will sink the canoe to the bottom. I know your not concerned about capsizing (from a previous response) but after watching it happen to another TH-camr I wanted to be prepared. He was cruising when the outboard turned sharply to one side when it hit bottom. The outboard spun the canoe over in an instant it was all captured on video. Anyway I do enjoy your videos especially as I sit inside on a rainy day like today in Memphis
I love the reese canoe loader! Easier to store than a trailer. And my canoe has a high curve to the bow, it allows me to load at 90 degrees without hitting my roof. Glad you're still getting out there @GeneD283 - see you on the water!
Thank you so much .I know how age can restrict you. I am 75, and seeing things that I use to do is getting harder. I am always looking for ways to make things easier so I can still do the things I want. Thats for your suggestion about the jugs. I have tried something like that. But they are hard to climb over. The bladder I can step on and it is low enough, that I can put things on top if I want. As you. I don't have much room in my yard. But you only are here once. So, I just work around it. The trailer and canoe are light enough, that I can wheel it into the back yard. I use to have to move the boat to get the big gate open. This spring, I widened the smaller gate on the side of the house to get the trailer though there. That made it a lot better. I have a good sized shop with about every tool and welders in it. So, there isn't too much I can't handle. In the winter. I look at my videos and remember how nice it was out on the water. Thank you for watching and connecting with me. It is funny how friendships get started on here. Stay safe. And thank you for enjoying my little videos.
Looks like the water bladder up front for ballast seems to be working out for you quite well. Are you liking the set up you have as you operate it from the canoe?
It was the first time using it. There are a few things I learned. 1st-- I need to fill it up all the way. In the first part of the video, You can see the front out of the water. And 2nd. I need to empty 90% of the water out before I try pulling it back on to the trailer. Because I have to lift the front up to get it on the trailer. And with that much weight in front. I can't do it. Those were the only 2 things I had trouble with. Other than that, it worked very well! In one of my next videos. I have drone footage of the canoe turning on its self. Came out wonderful.
Is that a Grummand? What length? What H.P. engine?
It is a 17ft. square stern canoe. With a 2021 Merc 5horse. It is all in my description for my channel.
I'd like to see a demonstration of the anchor modification you have, how it really works.
That is kinda hard to do. It is simple. The tie breaks and the rope goes to the other end.
Boost your audio some. Wear a microphone? Bruce in AUS has a wireless mic that he wears.
Usually I wear a wireless mic.. But I thought with the camera so close to me and holding it. It would work. The camera I used on this film don't have a place to attach a wireless mic. And I didn't want to use my recorder and dub the sound. It was just a short, fast video. On my main productions, I use other cameras and equipment. But thanks for the info.
A gallon of water weighs 8lbs 6oz. (8.375 lbs). That will equate to 251 pounds for you 30 gallon bladder. So you’re a little light on your number of 7.4 lbs per gallon. Is your intention to fill the bladder with water from the lake or river? Using the same pump only in reverse?
Thanks for the info. I was a firemen. And was taught that number. I plan on using the water I am going to be in. And yes reverse the system to empty the bladder. I'll leave a little water in, so the trailer has some tongue weight.
This is a great idea! There is a motorized canoe somewhere in my not too distant future, and, so I am very glad I came across your videos. I subbed quite a while ago and I never get tired of your times on the water.
Thank you so much. I know there isn't much difference in the videos. Just showing the canoe running in the water and landscape. I'll have some behind the scenes stuff all so. Thanks for your support.
Just getting to this stage...can't decide if I want to use my regular canoe with a mount or go for the square back type...
I have both. If you are using an electric motor on it. A double point is fine. But if you are planning on a gas motor with any weight, you will want a square stern. My motor weights about 45 pounds. I would not want that hanging off the side of a canoe.
I also want to add. If you decide on a square stern there are things you should know. The back of the canoe will cause drag as you paddle. We took the square stern up to the Boundary Water. We didn't use a motor. Because you can't. But paddleing the canoe was a chore. A double ended canoe goes better through the water. But if you have a motor on the back....WHO CARES!!!. So you have to decide what you want to do with it. If you want to paddle it. It will be harder. But if you want to use a motor. It works great! I use mine both ways. You have to decide for yourself. Good luck and let me know what you come up with.
People have asked about the trailer. It is a Trailex brand. It is rated for 300 pounds. It is designed to haul canoes. It has a soft suspension for a smoot ride. .
Happy memorial day, hope it's a good one for ya! I've been meaning to ask: What kind of trailer do you use? Is that a jon boat trailer with custom bunks, or ??? I read online to watch out for a trailer that's sprung too heavy, it can damage the canoe. Curious to hear your thoughts.
No it is a trailer designed for canoes. The load rating is 300pds. The suspension it has makes for a smooth ride. It will only handle canoes for now. I guess it can be modified for kayaks. But not for heavier crafts. The trailer is a (TRAILEX) Aluminum brand. They make all kinds of trailers.
@@Ralphcanoeingadventures you're a scholar - thanks for sharing your knowledge.
What motor is that??
It is a 5hp merc. 4 stroke.
How fast was that current were you fighting?
I guess it was running about 6mph. The river was being funneled through a tight area. So the current was pushing the canoe from the sides a bit. I have to admit. I was a little nervous!!.
I can't wait to see more! I am putting together a 5hp canoe setup this summer. Want to be able to launch myself, go upstream for a picnic in the park, and then drift back to my put-in/take-out point. Never ran an outboard tho so looking to youtube the great teacher :D
That is what I do. Everywhere I go, I have to get back to where I started. So a motor is great. I am like you. I motor up stream and float or paddle back down. Its the best of both worlds. Let me know how it works out.
Thanks
Nice rig! I never knew you could rescue an anchor like that.
Thank you. I have lost a few, until I did this. It works 90% of the time. Thaks for your comment.
Looks like a great adventure rig. Look forward to seeing where she takes you this summer.
Thanks, me too. In the past 51 years, she has taken me to places I would never have seen.
I like the behind the scene stuff!
I plan on doing more of that. I had plenty of time this winter to learn stuff. 😉
I was hoping this was a video of you trying out the 75hp motor on your Grumman! :)
That would be a very short video! The hardest part would be explaining it to my insurance company.....
Do you carry additional flotation for the outboard in the event of capsizing? I expect its weight would sink the canoe to the bottom if it every capsized. I have a 15 foot Grumman squareback canoe with a Mercury 3.5 HP outboard and a 45 lbs Minn Kota trolling motor
There is floatation in the front and back. It is rated for the weight of the whole craft.
Mine is a 17ft square stern. The motor weighs 28 lbs. But I have never capsized the canoe in 48 years.
I weighed the 5hp the other day. It weighed 64#s.
Is that a 15 ft Grumman ?
No. It is a 17ft. square stern canoe.
