2019-2022 Hobie Outback Seat Riser Installation - Snipe Air Industries
I had the pleasure of collaborating with Tim from Snipe Air Industries to design and manufacture the first seat riser kit for the 2019+ Hobie Outback kayak. He asked me to make an installation video, so please pardon my editing and video skills and post any questions you have in the comments.
The kit has been a great modification to my kayak! The extra height has been great; lots of extra room under the seat, easier to stand up, and less back and leg pain while pedaling.

Great work
just installed it, awesome video.
I just ordered mine. Cant wait to use it. cheers
Just placed the order, looking forward to this kit. Great idea.
just installed my new seat riser, cant wait to try it out, great video
What kind of cart is that
Great design! Did you notice any change in stability? I’m about 6’3. Thanks
I mean it’s not going to be zero change since you are raising your center of gravity on the kayak, but you get used to it very quickly. You can also still raise and lower the seat with the kit on. The lowest position with the seat raise kit is fairly similar to the highest position without it. Just raise it up incrementally as you get used to it, don’t overthink it! For context, we’ve had almost 700 kits get shipped out and I don’t think anyone has returned it because they didn’t like it.
With the seat raised, do you use or have you seen any underwear storage solutions that fit (yak gadget had a few that work for pro-anglers)? Maybe snipe air could fab and sell something specifically to work on the outback with the seat riser.
Under-seat…not underwear (stupid auto correct)
I’ve seen a guy use one of the yak gadget crates and it looks like it is working pretty well. I have a Plano XL Prolatch box that I keep under my seat as basically a junk drawer.
Installed mine today. This video was extremely helpful.
Good to hear, and thanks!
I bought the kit from Snipe Air Industries and installed it today. Installation was mostly quick and easy but I ran into 2 minor issues: 1) The screws for the rear seat risers are not long enough - they only protrude from the bottom of the plastic riser about 1/4". One of the threaded brass inserts in my kayak had incomplete threads near the top and the short amount of screw protruding from the plastic riser was not able to catch the threads. I solved this by buying a slightly longer screw from the hardware store for 79 cents. SAI should consider including 1 1/4" screws for this application, instead of the 1" screws that are currently included. 2) The right kickstand on my seat naturally wants to sit partially on top of the highest part of the rear riser. This seems unstable and potentially damaging to the seat because uneven pressure would be applied if I sat in the seat like that. I have to make sure to manually place the kick stand where it's supposed to go when installing the seat. Not that big of a deal, but a little disappointing. I may try to tweak the front risers to see if I can angle them forward a little bit and resolve the issue at the rear. I haven't used the kayak yet since the installation but I'm looking forward to it, hopefully it's a more comfortable ride
1 1/4” screws are actually too long for this application. They bottom out before the seat riser is tight.
@@matt.denney Interesting... thanks for the response. The 1 1/4" screw I bought from the store fit perfectly on my kayak. I checked the depth of the brass insert before buying the new screw and it is about 1/2". The brass insert on my kayak is also slightly recessed into the plastic hull, that might have been part of the reason why the stock screw did not fit and the 1 1/4" does fit. I just adjusted the front risers (loosened the screws and tilted the aluminum plates before re-tightening them). The right kickstand still rests on the topmost part of the rear riser (the left one does too now) but it is less than before. Now the kickstands drop into the proper place when any weight is applied to the seat. I think this is an improvement from when I first installed it.
Question about the kayak kushion. Do they still sell the one you have?
Seriously. Thanks so much!! The fact that you designed this and then now produce it is great. If you are ever in Wisconsin I will buy you a beer!!
Seria possivel comprar e voce me enviar para o Brasil? Achei muito bom e no Brasil nao temos esse acessorio. Obrigado!
Send a message to the Snipe Air Industries page on Facebook. It is a possibility, you will just have to ask. We have shit to several different countries outside of the United States so far.
I wish I would have found this sooner. Order just arrived today and I can't wait to get it installed. Thanks for pushing this idea into fruition!
You’re very welcome! It was fun to partner with Tim from Snipe Air Industries for this design. Hope you enjoy it!
I have the h rail handle on the sides of my seat does this in any way get in the way of the rails?
Sorry for the late reply. If you look on the Snipe Air Industries website, there is an H-Rail riser kit available to specifically address this issue!
Will this work for compass?
Unfortunately no, they have different seat designs.
Has there been any recorded hull damage with the mod installed?
No, no hull damage reported, and we’ve sold hundreds of these kits!
VERY helpful. Great Hack! Thanks for taking the time to do this. I've already ordered mine, plus the handrail risers. Please keep looking for ways to enhance the Outback experience.
Do you think it'll work with only installing the rear mounts for that extra 1 1/2"?
I don’t see why not! My only concern would be that it may put some extra backwards pressure on the rear mounts because of the seat angle.
Did they change the kickstands for 2019. On my 2018 the kickstands are not deployed and you have to pull the tab for them to deploy..
2019+ has kickstands deployed by default. Pulling the tab retracts the kickstands
This is a well made video. As an anal retentive semi mechanic, I did it just step by step and alls well. Thanks, Matt! Good job!
Thank you! I have an aircraft maintenance background, so the anal retentive gene is alive and well lol.
@@matt.denney Good God, dude. My comments were 7 months ago. Glad you found time to respond. No problem. All is well.
@@georgesolana1625 hah, sorry about that! I had some time away from socials and TH-cam. Glad you’re enjoying the kit!
Any idea when these will be available?
When do you guys believe that this kit will be back in stock
Even though you had very detailed instructions, I managed some missteps but finally got the risers installed. My 2020 Outback did not have any shims so the installation was a tight fit. I can only lower the seat about one notch before it binds up. Of course having the seat in the top notch is the point of getting the risers.
After the mod, how many positions in the back? can the kick stand be lowered? Thanks.
As far as I can tell there are 2 positions in the back after the mod. Kickstands can be deployed on the rear risers, or they can be retracted and the seat frame can sit directly on the rear risers. This is in contrast to the stock configuration where there are 3 positions - kickstands deployed on the molded-in risers, kickstands deployed on the deck, or kickstands retracted and seat frame on the deck.
Guys that are 230-240 do you see any issues with the front plates? I’m worried about swaying side to side and working those bottom screws out. Do you have a big guy alternative to strengthen the front plates?
Ordered a set a few months ago and had to order a Hobie H-Rail riser kit shortly there after. I finally got to Outback in the house “I’m in FL and my garage is not insulated… yet.” Needless to say it’s been a bit warm in there and working in the a/c is much more enjoyable. Either way, after months of having the seat & H-rail risers, I finally installed them not long ago and now have o continue cleaning up wires for my lights and rigging my Garmin & transducer.
Where can order the hrail riser kit? You're talking about the one's that go on the side of your seat correct? I'm looking to get this seat riser but I'm curious about how this can get in the way of the hrail? Thanks in adv.
@@pernamore1978 Sniper Air Industry also carries them on their website, the kit has the spacers and longer screws. If you buy the sear riser kit alone it's nice, but if you have H-rails installed already, you're not going to be able to reinstall them due to clearance issues.
This should fit a 2018 outback no? Not sure if they changed the seat at all
Nope, 2019 and up.
Your kit comes with four stainless steel washers. I see where you used two washes with the locking nuts. Where do you use the other two stainless steel washers?
This kit is great. So easy to install and I can go from sitting to standing with eaze.
I just picked up a 2019 outback last night. I was looking into reviews before I got it and I’m seeing some hulls cracking right at the kick stand area. Is anybody having or have seen this issue happening. I know every single kayak is different but now I’m curious if I made the right decision or not. Tight Lines !!!
Disponibiliza na Amazon para ser possível comprarmos e se entregue no Brasil. Parabéns!! 👏👏
Just purchased. The only complaint with the Outback for me is the seat height and if this solves the lower back pains at the end of the day on the water, big W.
So. I don’t ever say this phrase a lot But this is an absolute GAMECHANGER Holy crap I can’t wait to get a kit on my outback, I love my kayak but HATE how low the seat is!
Exactly what inspired the design!
Would this by chance fit a 2017 outback ?
I was wondering the same thing.
Would love to see how far down the seat can go? Will it go back down to the highest position of the original? Wondering about stability in the ocean, most days would be fine, but if it gets hairy out there can lower the seat to where the kayak will be more stable?
Yes, the lowest position on the front is basically the same as the highest position in a stock configuration. You can also raise the kick stands in the back of the seat to save a little bit of height in the back as well. It’s about a 2 hour drive for me to get to the ocean, but a couple weeks ago I was out on a large main channel lake in the afternoon on a Saturday… Boat traffic had waves up to 3-4 and I never felt unsafe.
Thanks a lot for coming up with this item, I was concerned how I was going to solve this looking for alternatives and this came up on a Facebook group, got both the seat and h rail kits. It’s perfect!.
Awesome man, glad you are liking it! After you get a little bit of time on the water with it, we would sure appreciate some pictures and a post in those Facebook groups! 🍻
I assume the front of the seat can be lowered to make it even with the back height so I don’t have to be tilted back. Am I right?
Yep!
Got mine today and installed it after watching this video. Seems solid and may address the only concern (seat height) that I had with buying the Outback instead of the Pro Angler. I hope to try it out this weekend. Thanks for building a great kit!

Just a thought about the installation. I think it would be better if using a drop of thread lock and tightning the screws with hand for better feel. Great invarion and video! Thanks!
Probably wouldn't hurt at all!
Just ordered! Waiting patiently for them to be produced and shipped 😊 hope they are as brilliant as I think!
Looks like they sold out already when will there be more available?
He hasn’t stocked them yet, just put up the project page last night. Sign up for email notifications on the page, shouldn’t be long.
More should be available very soon! Tim is just waiting on more front risers to get back from powder coating.
@@matt.denney got mine and installed it’s awesome
@@johnyuschak5317 Good to hear! Glad you like it!
Hyped!
Great kit design! I'm looking forward to these being available. :)
