Fierce Headwinds Almost Stopped Us
After taking a break at Orisson we continued our walk higher into the Pyrenees. We hadn't gone far when we came around a bend into a strong headwind. The steep grade is challenging on its own, but a 40+mph headwind REALLY made it tough for us! We had to stop to catch our breath often.

Camino Pyrenees Challenge Ep. 2: Could We Do It?
มุมมอง 211วันที่ผ่านมา
Our most challenging stage on the Camino has always been crossing the Pyrenees! But it is also one of the most breathtakingly beautiful sections. When we left Orisson we went just over the next mountain and ran into a STRONG headwind, probably 40 mph! It elevated the difficulty of that ascent a LOT! We truly didn't know if we would make it. Starting Our Camino, Ep. 1: Into the Pyrenees
มุมมอง 1.3K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
What a beautiful beginning to our Fall Camino! This was our fifth time walking into the Pyrenees, the MOST challenging section of the Camino Francés for us. About an hour into the walk, we didn't know if we could make it to Orisson! The elevation change from St. Jean to Orisson is more than 3400 feet up (1000meters) in about 5 miles (8km). Could we make it? We appreciate it when people like the...

Camino de Santiago, GETTING YOUR POLES to SPAIN
Great video guys! I was around a week ahead of you all! The wind was unbelievable crossing the Pyrenees.
thanks, Shelley! Yes, and we have had that kind of wind on two other times we walked across the Pyrenees! It must be fairly common!
This video just made me smile. I walked in that area in August when the temperatures were in the 90s, but we had headwinds just as you did. When we got up to the Statue there were shepherds with their sheepdog running the cattle down through the valley and it was so interesting to watch. Thank you for bringing back the wonderful memories. I can't wait to go again
@@1PZfan thank you for sharing your memory! I love to hear others share their Camino stories!
Thanks for a lovely video.
😊👍
Beautiful video. Everything is still green, even in the fall!
@@exploringthevines5869 yes! This section stays green ! At least in the three seasons we have walked it. Can’t say about winter since the route is officially closed.😊
Thank-you for a lovely video.

Vayan con cuidado, en el Norte de España hace mucho frio en esta época y en el Sur.., también.😂❤
yes, it was cold some of the time we were there!
We were excited to see the Cathedral in Braga, which is beautiful, but the Burgos Cathedral is more beautiful. Thanks for showing us.

A tip is to wear your socks inside out. This comes from John Wooden, UCLA coach.
@@MrRugbyprop1 might be a good idea. Thanks!
Have you ever had any problems with stray dogs?
@@MrRugbyprop1 never have. We walked through some farms where there was a dog. But it was on a leash. Just barking. No problems.
Nice photos.
@@MrRugbyprop1 thanks!
I love your attitude, "the Camino that we're having is the Camino that God had for us to do". I came to that thought when I knew that I could not complete the Camino. I enjoyed every moment, everyone I met, and every trial that challenged me. I still am amazed at the blessings He sent my way.
God’s grace is sufficient for what he sets before us. Grateful to be here in Santiago. Fun meeting so many pilgrims!
Take your time to get well! I am really happy and thankful to have met you in Akerreta. You two shine with passion and power. ¡Ultreya!

@@CaminoProvisions Sorry to hear that. Please take care.
Do you have the phone number of the taxi driver that went to get you at the Virgen? And does he speak English or Spanish, or only French
We went to the SJPP Tourist Info Office and asked if they would call for us. (because we don’t speak French). The company was Express Bourricot . +33 661 960 476 email: contact@expressbourricot.com. My experience with taxis and luggage transport is that they often can communicate by What’s App when I use simple English, and they use simple French and Spanish 😊

@@joansisneros8375 thank you for your comment. You have encouraged us!😊
You two are impressively fit. I’m 58 and couldn’t do this right now. I’m curious as to your age(s). The more I watch, the more it becomes my dream to complete a Camino. That first 5 miles you talked about with the 3k foot climb out of St Jean de Pieds made me think wow. That’s like climbing Mt Washington in NH where the most common route is about 5 miles up and 2800 feet.
@@xthinker88 there are many people more fit than we are for sure! In general, we do walk every day outside, or at least in a mall or on a treadmill. We also go at a pace that is slower than many, and take 5-10 minute breaks every hour or so. We rested and ate at Orisson, used their toilets, but did not walk all the way to Roncesvalles. We have done that twice in our lives, and know we can’t anymore. We listen to our bodies and do what we can do. In this video we were 68 and 69. 😊 We are leaving next week to walk again. This time we are 70, 71.
Where did you get the framed map of the Camino routes?
We bought it a few years ago online. I think it was through an anon the Camino de Santiago Forum. I just went on to look for it so I could send you a link, but I don't see it there any longer. We love it because it has just the right amount of detail for pilgrims (not highway details or things drivers might need). If there is a company name on the map, it is covered up by our frame. Sorry I can't be more help. When we are in Santiago in October, we will plan to visit Ivar, and we will ask him about it. I'll let you know anything I find out, 🙂
@@CaminoProvisions Thank you so much. I am on the verge of retirement and have been thinking about the camino for the past two years. It is a really scary decision and confusing to pick routes, timing, etc. Your videos are wonderful and I have your site in my bookmarks for future research. Good luck on your next walk!

@@CaminoProvisions doing great. Charles insists on working but I’m firmly retired and traveling quite a bit. I recently did the Portuguese Way from Porto and the Kumamo Kodo in Japan. The fall has us both cycling in Sicily and Sardinia and then I’m heading to Turkey for a few weeks followed by a trip to Botswana with Charles. I’m ending 2025 (so far anyway!) with a month hiking in England doing the Dale’s Way and Hadrian’s Wall and Scotland doing the West Highland Way. Safe travels and Buen Camino; I admit I’m a bit jealous of you doing the Frances again. What a wonderful experience.

Chaco Z-Clouds. Good for the alburgue, even for the trail if it isn't too rocky rough.
Thanks for this suggestion. They certainly appear to be a good alternative. Only concern would be their weight to carry in your pack versus the Crocs we have recommended.

Just found your channel which I am really enjoying. I am planning to walk the Camino, but as a single female of 55 years of age, I am a little nervous of solo travel, but will also relish the solitude, so lots of good information from your experiences for me to rhink about. Thank you.

Interesting thought.
You make some great points about a solo Camino vs. going with a companion or a group. Makes me think the best of both worlds would be to go with a companion and plan to walk solo every other day or every couple of days. Thanks for sharing your great experiences and insights.
Yes, even when Wick and I are walking together, we are often lost in our own thoughts, or one of us walks a bit faster than the other. So it is as you say. You can be on the journey together, but have some solitude as well.
I am going to start my first Camino end of July thru first week of September. I would like to know what's the best way to get to St. Jean Pied de Port from CDG airport Paris. Your input is greatly appreciated. Thank you for making this video.
On our first Camino we flew into CDG, then took the TGV to Bayonne, then a local train to SJPP. To check train times a free app we like is Rome2Rio. Also a website, you plug in any departure city and destination city and it displays all the transportation that goes between the two points you tell it. For the trains and buses, it links to the correct company that provides the service, and you can explore the schedules. It also gives approximate costs. Very useful tool. We did discover when we planned to use the train (several years ago) we could not make a reservation from the US. We were told it was because the European companies couldn't be assured that they would be paid by our US credit card company. I don't know if that has changed, or if the reason given to us was true. Some people also take a commuter flight from Paris, but check out what airport those flights depart from. The person I recall flew from Paris to Biarritz, then from there to SJPP, either by bus or taxi. Hope this helps you figure out your itinerary. Buen Camino!
