A lot of this seems quite excessive, at least from the point of view of a European like myself. Like keeping the whistle going all the way till a crossing. Here a horn or whistle is only used if the crossing is unguarded with no lights or barriers, and there is a specific sign telling the driver to sound the horn. And even then its just a single long whistle.

These steam engines are the reason that i want to be an engineer

In the UK train drivers are only supposed to sound the horn if there are engineers on the track or if there is a whistle board which means they need to sound the horn because there is a foot crossing coming up but some drivers also give tones (horn) to trainspotters and they also sound the horn for shunting purposes here in the UK

And yet people still try to cross the crossing way too late

I live near a railroad and it sucks there is a railway around a mile away from me and the worst part it it always happens at night

Unrelated but a few years ago in Japan a bunch of rail fans, also known as "Toritetsu" in the country were getting out of hand. They caused trouble like blocking people from boarding trains during morning rushes, getting in the way of a moving train to snap a picture of it, placing tripods in front of the train's doorway, practically anything you can imagine. One day JR (the company managing the country's railways and trains) made posters to warn the toritetsus writing: "Dear our train-loving friends, Trains moving outside have many many people in them, they are not toy trains, so, doing things like getting into the rails, blocking the train from moving, getting into roads and homes and parking lots even if someone didn't tell you "you can get in" looking at trains and taking pictures is a bad thing to do, they are not toys and they are public transports. Don't forget about it!!" Keep in mind that the whole thing was written in Hiragana, the first letter format you learn in schools. And no, that wasn't me being horrible at translating, the poster was written in a childish tone and grammar. Let's just say the toritetsus took it very personal. Edit: the poster had a little bit of text in the corner saying: "If you don't understand ask your parents."
