This is an excellent video. Thank you! I want to try the method myself, so I went looking for wintergreen oil. The brand on your bottle (Humco) seems to indicate that it is synthetic wintergreen oil (Methyl Salicylate, as you say in the video) rather than any kind of natural essential oil. The Humco label design has changed, so I'm not 100% sure it's the same thing. Can you confirm that you're using the synthetic oil? Thanks very much!

I asked my bookbinding instructor about this technique and was told to avoid it when using bookcloth because it will fray. Have you ever noticed that?
In my experience, fraying comes from two factors: dull blade and poor skill/lack of patience. Otherwise it has worked out fine.
Good video! Do you face problems with paper wrinkling because of the excess water in the glue?
Thank you. No I don’t have wrinkly paper, but there isn’t enough water in my brush to cause a problem, and the glue itself is no problem. Some papers do have issues regardless, and I don’t use those anymore.

@@NealCox Nothing special. Cardstock and colored paper. The kind that goes for wedding invitations and scrapbooking. Like SINAR SPECTRA Premium Colour, Herlitz, weight about 120-160 g/mp. I am thinking of going for some bookbinding cloth that is backed with paper but is not easy to find good, light colors. Many are almost always out of stock. And when they usually are, they are so expensive...

Will the wintergreen oil leave a fragrance on the paper I will transfer on?
I transferred to paper years ago using wintergreen. It definitely stays in the paper for a long, long time. I do not recommend using wintergreen for transferring onto paper. If I had to do a toner transfer to paper, I would try something else. Here, I was transferring onto linoleum, which didn’t absorb the wintergreen.

If you're referring to the citrus strip visible about 7 minutes in, it is used for removal of the Baldwin Etching Ground (BIG) used as a less toxic alternative for hard and soft grounds. th-cam.com/video/n44VHWE8WWY/w-d-xo.html

Hello, I’m a knife maker who uses acid etching. I’m acing trouble finding a stop out for my needs. What I’d love to do is be able to dip and dry. Can you recommend?
I have used this stop out varnish: shop.takachpress.com/stopout-varnish-graphic-chemical/ It’s fairly toxic, so be sure to use it in a well ventilated area.

Hi Neal. Thanks for the video. Why did you choose CMYK negatives over RGB ones to work with gum bichromate? If you use RGB negatives, how would you make a negative for the black pigment?
Hi Daniel. I’ve worked both ways, and I really do like the RGB method for how fun it is to interpolate the additive color to subtractive color, but, frankly, some of my students really struggle to understand that process, so I thought I’d make a cmyk option for them. With RGB, I don’t typically print a black negative. I just recycle the red/blue negative (red channel/blue pigment), which I print first, again at the end using a darker pigment and a shorter exposure.

What are the dinensions of the cradle side pieces? Your video is the easiest one I've found to follow.
Thank you for your comment. I'd say the sides are approximately 5 inches wide and 5-6 inches tall. It really depends on the size of the signatures you're punching. A larger signature than the standard 6x9" that I typically make may need a larger cradle.

Would the grain direction be the same for landscape orientation?
Yes, keep the grain parallel to the spine regardless of the format of the page.

I used acetone and while the transfer was very good and I didn't have to worry about adding too much solvent, it tended to evaporate if I didn't move quickly and if it evaporated, the transfer didn't work as well. Also, the paper disintegrates (as if it were wet with water) if you burnish it when it is saturated. Kind of a tricky balance to strike. Either method seems to have ups and downs.
I have tried a number of solvents, including acetone, lacquer thinner, and toluene, all of which are far too smelly and flammable for my preferences. I've heard that citrusolv is effective, but my experiments with it failed to produce anything worth wrestling with. For now, I'm sticking with wintergreen until I find something better (effective without being toxic).
Kettle knot and kettle station? Wow. Well, those already used to the terminology hopefully will get through it. Won't continue as it's not for us trying to learn a new and better way. Good luck in your endeavors. I never got the full measurements anywhere to make the cradle either. So exasperating.

Great tutorial, Neal; best one I have encountered to date. Quick question: what stop-out are you using (it is pinkish-clear in color). I am accustomed to using dark hard ground, but it masks details underneath after it is applied. Thanks.
Thank you for your generous feedback. Regarding your question: I have also used diluted hard ground many years ago, and I don't necessarily dislike it. I've been using this product in the video, and I don't necessarily like it either, but here it is anyway: shop.takachpress.com/etching/etching-grounds/stopout/ It's pretty toxic stuff. If you find something better, I'd love to know about it.
