I’m a general contractor in the San Diego, California area, looking to inform people of the new building techniques and ways to be sustainable and efficient. I’ve been doing construction for 36+ years, started while I was in high school. It’s super strange to think building hasn’t evolved in all those years, it has, just the adoption of these changes are crazy slow. Hopefully you can see some things that will help you build better.

Steep slope retaining system (Dirt Locker) (pt.1)

We have a steep slope on our hillside, and we did a lot of homework to figure out what to do with it. After a few months, we decided to use the Dirt Locker system instead of a retaining wall. We like the look and the cost much more than a retaining wall. We hope this product stands up to the test of time. 12-13-23 Update is coming - we've received a bunch of comments and requests to do an update.

Uh.. the image is quite stretched
100% it was filmed in 16:9 wide aspects ratio so condensing it to 9:16 didn’t work so well. Next time I will take a phone and film vertical to get the correct perspective
My lens is 16-35 wide angle
Think I’m gonna have to upgrade to the tempo belt !
Lot of work and precision to make it look so beautiful!!
Wow, very nice, Arturo did good!! Always do beautiful work guys!! Proud of you!! Keep making those customers happy and satisfied with your great work 🎉
Hello. What size are you in pants and what size belt did you buy? And how are you doing after 5 months?
@@Valdiviadelsur I purchased the M\L belt and I’m size 38 waist. The belt fits but if I was to do it again I would have tried the next size. If I end up loosing some weight it will be perfect. The belt is pretty awesome, I’m not sure if I’m thinking that because I spent so much? Either way it’s nice having an almost custom belt. I’m sure after a year I’ll take things off and/or add things.
Great video. I have the Grande and decided to order 722 slingshot. Super stoked!!
I think you needed fewer units from left to right and one or even two more rows.
The layout was done by Dirtlocker - at the time you would just enter in your length and width and it would calculate the amount of dirtlockers needed. It was also calculated by using the interlocking system, however, since then Dirtlocker has reached out to me telling me that interlocking is no longer recommended.
400 bucks for non leather crazy
Monumental Workx did an excellent job with the tinting on my Cybertruck, but it amplified the glare from the white dash in the mirrors. To fix this, I went back to have them wrap the top part of the white dash in matte black, which matched the door trim and eliminated the reflection problem. 😎👍
Thank you, great video. I can see you are a TOOL guy, buying the best ones on the market, I am pretty the same. I moved from Romania and I will start a handyman business, in the Pnw area. Not being used to wear a tool belt, but needed one, is just a pain to have your hand tools all over the place, on the floor, on the working table, on the table saw etc. I just ordered the tempo belt, to address that, I’m pretty excited for it, but not being able to framer, I just ordered a wrangell 2.0 pouch with the hammer holster, for my right side and I got a db sax, for nails, screws or water bottle. Great setup Sir, and a very beautiful present for yourself.
We have a large Miele induction cooktop that has been in service for less than two years. When it was delivered brand new, one of the stations was not working. A factory service technician the next week and replaced to faulty station. He stated that he had done a similar repair two weeks before on a similar unit. Does not say about Miele's quality control at the factory. The cooktop worked well until this evening when it went into demo mode and we cannot get it out of demo mode. We could not use the cooktop to cook dinner tonight. So tomorrow I will have to call Miele and arrange a service call, for which I might have to pay for. In addition, we noticed that the enamel in our Miele oven is not holding up well, with small lines developing in the outer layer of the enamel.
Thank you for sharing, keep us posted on your repair
Thanks for the video. Do you plan on getting it wrapped?
@@Moormores yes, I’m trying to get sponsorship now. Monumental Workx’s is offering to wrap it for advertising, which is great since the price of the truck was a stretch for us to afford. Fingers crossed.

I would tint the windows too, because I wouldn't want to be seen inside one of those embarrassing failures.
@@russellheath7587 it was a huge sacrifice for us to get the truck (money wise) as a general contractor I wanted to pollute the environment less. Mission accomplished. We are very proud of our choice. We don’t preach to others, but we are doing our part for everyone to breathe clean air, especially our grandkids. You’re our first negative comment (I’m sure it won’t be our last).I support your opinion and whatever choices you make for yourself, Just curious why you think the Cybertruck is a failure?
I love mine, to each his own
I am not a fan of the CT look ,but the tech on the CT is amazing. And the tint job is very well done.
Once the roots of your plants get through the gopher wire, I would have thought your solution will work. How’s it looking now ?
It looks fantastic, the plants really took off. The dirt locker makes it 100 times easier to water.
For years steering wheels like that were highly illegal. Not sure what’s changed.
Surprisingly I really like the steering wheel, but i think we can get use to almost anything.
One thing I recommend to folks is to use native prairie grasses on their steep slopes. If you plant them in rows, you get a natural terracing effect that because their deep-rooting nature works overtime to keep the soil in place. Switch Grass is attractive and comes in many cultivars. There's also Indian grass, Big Bluestem, Little Bluestem, Prairie Dropseed, Cone Flower, Lead Plant, Compass Plant.... a whole host of fun grasses and wildflowers that you can use to maximize the strength of the ground. Even with the Dirt Locker system, you should still be using the native grasses and wildflowers because their deep root structures will bind everything together.
@@threeriversforge1997 great info. Thanks for sharing. We haven’t done the plants on the inside, so we will use some of your recommendations. We did the rosemary on the perimeter because we heard that it repels the gophers.
@@pe-man4838 I've heard rosemary and onions are both good for that. I'm waiting on a shipment of Allium cernuum (nodding onion) to try out since it's both native and edible. When you get to researching native plants, you'll run into a famous image of their root systems and how deeply they burrow into the ground. Lead Plant goes down something like 15', and the early settlers used to complain that it made the ground nearly impossible to plow. :D
@PE-man4838 hi neighbor. We just stumbled upon your video while trying to understand what we can do to our Clairemont slope. Any chance we can connect and pick your brain/expertise?
Hunk of crap.
Ours has been working flawlessly for months (fingers crossed)

Awesome! Congratulations with the cybertruck 🔥
Thanks! 😁
I have same rig! Way better than our old bags
I'm in San Diego, too, and my yard has a steep hill. I installed Dirt Lockers but separate rows (not connected like yours) since the angle is about 43 degrees. My problem is the bottom side of DL is not touching the ground entirely, so the soil slides out. I don't think I can walk on them without losing soil. I'm trying to figure out how to securely close the gaps.... maybe by straw wattles or something. Yours look fabulous, by the way!
One key is to plant native plants that have very deep-rooting habits. That binds the soil in place even against erosion and gravity. A good example of this would be Panicum virgatum (Switch Grass) which is absolutely lovely stuff. It's hair-like roots go down six feet or more and prevent the ground from going anywhere. Echinacea purpurea and E. palida, the Purple Coneflowers everyone loves, are another example. Both are native to California, I believe, so there's no harm in adding them in spots to help tie the dirt lockers to the existing soil strata.
I had to flash flood go through my dirt lockers and washed several of them out!
I've had my diamondback 4" belt with the ox and miter bag setup and gatorback suspenders for the last couple years. I just received my tempo belt. Why would they put the molle type slots on the belt if they get covered up by the bags? It would make more sense for the bags to wrap the inner belt, surely it would support the bags more. Not sure if I'm going to keep the tempo belt.
how do you like that martinez so far? I just joined the union and looking into buying a hammer thats going to last.
I just got a martinez m1 this week, best hammer I've ever used and way less wear on my elbow
I’ve had a Martinez m4 handle with m1 head for the past 2.5 years now still love it don’t see myself ever going back
See if ya can find someone that has one and will let ya try pne out. I bought the M4 as soon as it was released, used it up until last fall. Didnt help my elbow much at all tbh. Gave it away to one of my guys. The side puller is awesome, feels nice in hand but is about the same weight as a 20oz. Estwing(not all that light). Good hammer but wasnt the end all of hammers for me. Using a sturnus 13oz. for about a year now along side my 10oz titanium wood handle for trim
Man you went all out new tools and all lol. Nice i actually just got that same setup but with the 4in belt and suspenders. I got the Mule and SxS thinking i wanted a lot of space but its way more than i needed. Ive only used it a few times but i like it ao far
How do you like the suspenders? I was also eyeballing the vest, but so used to just using a belt.
@pe-man4838 I like them forsure I've never used them either but if you got those pouches loaded up pretty good it definitely takes some weight off the hips.
You went from like $200-$300 set up tools included to like $1200-$1300 set up tools included lol Thats a level up for sure. But being in the industry 20+ years you deserve it. Enjoy
I can say that I am for sure impressed. Those CLC bags still look pretty good for 20yrs of use.
I threw them into the washing machine a few times. I had mastic on them and it fell right off. Of course I had to do it when my wife was at work, she would have killed me, knowing I put them in the washing machine.
Diamondback sells handles that clip onto your belt. Also, the back hammer loop is nice for carrying a slap stapler or big snips. If you use either of those things.
Thanks I just ordered the handles. I'll wait to cut the hammer loop off until I use the bag for a few months. You're right it might come in handy?

Niceeeeeew 😃😃😃👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻💯💯💯💯
@pe-man4838 with the rain Southern California just received February of 2024, How has your system held up??
Amazingly well. The only issue is the dirt lockers separating from one another. Dirt locker has updated the Installation instructions so it’s installed differently now, it should work. The gopher wire really helped too.
Awesome! Thanks. We had some serious erosion and seeing your video helped us determine that this is something we can do. And we're excited to get started.
it held up fantastic - I think it's due to the plants being more mature and the roots are doing their part in holding the hillside. Before the dirt locker we tried using Rancho sprinkler control to water the hillside. The Rancho would water a few minutes then shut off and do the same cycle for an hour, this help from the water running down the hill. With the dirt locker the plants are doing 100% better since the water isn't running down the hill the plants get all the water.
Its always fun when you get a refrigerant leak on multihead system.
Hard to tell from the video, but are your dirt lockers LEVEL? Good tip on not filling them with all rock and instead filling with soil and topping that off with rock. Hope this works! Any tips on installing the J hooks over that gopher mesh?
I used a rotating laser to set the dirt lockers, however since they twisted not all the lockers are level. The J hooks easily pierce the gopher wire.
We are considering installing these on our slope in Clairemont! Can we check yours out?
Yes, please send your email address and we’ll reach out. We are by Mesa college.
Test....trying to reply. You tube removing because of my email.
Great video! Really appreciate it. Looking into this for our commercial property with a hill / slope about the same size as yours. Trying to calculate the install time. How long / How many man hours did it take you to install this?
It was basically just me - and my wife helped once in a while. Grading the hill was about 30 hours - metal mesh 4 hours - installing the dirt locker - 6 to 7 hours - filling the dirt locker about 15 hours -irrigation 6 hours - in total - about 56 to 60 work hours. Getting the materials such as dirt, irrigation and rock - about 20 hours Hope this helps
Thanks for a honest take on this system. Have you decided now after the 10 months if it is working for you. Will you be posting a video soon? Thanks.
The company has reached out and offered to help fix the dirt lockers ( we had to put that on hold due to water damage to our house) however, it has held up well with the rains we got in San Diego. I will post a follow-up video soon.

I hope you can do a follow-up video to this. I have the same situation including the gophers and am looking into dirt lockers. Any lessons learned from your real-world experience would be very helpful as I think this through.
Thank you for posting this video. Very helpful. How is it holding up ? I know it’s too early to tell, did it keep it’s shape? I have the same sloping in my backyard and I need a solution. Thanks in advance.
