Great video, very well presented but more importantly well done for exposing what is clearly total incompetence! It's very concerning to know that there are contractors who are installing this equipment and must have some sort of certification but are actually leaving electrical systems in such a dangerous state. As you mentioned you were very lucky not to have been seriously injured as a direct result of this extremely poor installation! ⚡🤯

Interesting. I have always had live at the back terminals of the Henly Block. So the meter installation looks correct to me. It appears the tails to the consumer unit are not as I would expect them. Still the meter installer should have checked and put it right.

The guy that installed the smart meter may have been eager to get to the next job and cut corners.

Why swap around , should have called out the inulation company. They got paid well to do a sub standard job 😮

The new advert stating we might be “rewarded” for using smart meters at different times really means we are going to pay more for electricity when we actually want to use it! I could see this coming from the very moment they were introduced and so much public money has been wasted on subsidising a technology that does not work properly and is designed to create greater profits for the power companies often based in other countries. How ridiculous all this is and shame on those politicians who let all this happen!

The moral of the story, Do not get a so called smart meter installed

What did the power company do about this? I feel that it is unfair for a customer or landlord to pay for this when the fault was caused by the power companies. I wonder how many homes are like this and the owner just leaves it because they cant afford to get it fixed.

This illustrates perfectly why I always, and recommend others, stick the non contact voltage indicator (Voltstick) into anything and everything before my fingers. These cannot be relied upon to prove safe, of course, neither do they necessarily prove unsafe, but if they light when you're not expecting them to, even for a second, it does indicate "proceed with extreme caution".

That's almost unbelievable! How flipping dangerous, what idiot changed the meter over, someone that just completed a govt training scheme? I'm an ex sparks retired now, but we had our SM fitted this year too in our house, and seeing this made me check our polarity. Thanks for the good awareness video.

Having seen what they did to my cousins house basically beat a hole through the meter box and screwed half an acre of wood to the wall! I was in two minds about getting a smart meter fitted. Unfortunately I had solar installed because of the cost of electricity and living in the country you tend to rely on it quite a lot. As soon as the two? “Bob-a-Jober’s” came to my door I Schooled them on how they were going to install it, firstly by getting rid of the surfboard they had pre-mounted the meter too and told them to either “retrofit or not fit” as you can imagine they were very understanding not so I did mention that if they put a whole in my meter cupboard I would sue them personally for criminal damage and not E.ON. so the installation was very neat…

And don't forget that when a Henley block is used, the lives should be at the rear of the block and the neutrals should be at the front.but no excuse for not doing a socket test after completing work.

Im no electrician but been told every smart meter install has to have a manual switch fitted after smart meter.

I think you should name and shame the company who carried out the work. There is no legal reason not to. It is your duty, knowing what you know, to inform people about possible safety issues regarding smart meter installations.

Excellent video! Just one question, you mentioned the electricity company had put tags on the smart meter and connecting box (with the problem) was it a legal problem to remove the tag and reverse the wires?

Be interesting to know if it's a subby or not, I had a legacy meter change by a similar blue coloured utility company, sent a subby, never did a socket test until he was about to leave and i asked if he needed a socket to test from... The subbys on price work are usually the worst culprits, the industry should never have been incentivesed like that, absolute joke

In other words Donkeys have made a cock up and not checked their work even though they say they have. Donkeys and 240v don’t mix. I’m not an electrician but even I double check the polarity if I do any work in the house, because I’m not a donkey

OLDEST trick in book neutral / live round wroung way . . DID 16 , yrs AS white goods SERVICE engineer diploma / city guilds pat tester 2237 . Came across this often . MEANS if it postive + switched Turn fuse off its still live . WE as humans not perfect , THATS basic stuff .
