Hey, That's MY Idea! | Tool - Vicarious | Songwriting Breakdown
I thought it might be interesting / fun to break down some songs I like and see if I can pick apart what makes them interesting and unique. I figured Tool would be a good place to start and I was right (of course!). Enjoy!

I saw how many views some frankly horrendous guitar backing tracks out there have acquired, so couldn't help but feel I could do a good job of turning one of my demos into a backing track-ified version to see what you all think. IMO Jimmy Page is a pretty good guitarist who has been winging it for years, but little more than that. Led Zeppelin had a very solid rhythm section and Plant's vocals carried them too, all which in turn made Page seem a lot better than he actually was.
Rudy ur smile is so sweet☺️
You are so beautiful you remind me of Lucifer I mean it in a nice way
This helped me get so much better than ever have in only 4 months, and it’s because I always think about what Adam says “am I better than who I was yesterday”
Surreal
Joe's voice is very "clotted cream"-ish
You all look fantastic in colorful shorts 😜
As a college Prof with a PhD, we use that word a lot, but now we'll be saying pedagogy with a French accent.
Why not both???
Yes! The best singer of all time 🙌🏽
Another reason why your band sucks. No stage preference or putting on a show
It was a shame Spencer had diarrhea tonight
😂😂😂😂 give me a fucking break no wonder there's no fucking views. Your numbers show that people are tired of hearing about this shit
Great interview! Relaxed and chill with relevant questions.
I love dean but someone get him a pop filter cause those sharp s’s fuckin hurt!
Ska bands fulfilling these fantasies for decades
Most of my favorite bands joke around live. Trying to act brutal outside of the music is just kind of cringe. Leave that to the deathcore kiddies.
Why I don't like Slaughter to Prevail. Hell, took me a loonnngg time to get down with Slipknot because of their 'serious' get up. Even the recording videos, just cringe sometimes. And let's not even talk about Metallica's TBS style recording videos good lord.
I think the "serious" vibe works best when theres some element of mystery. Like even tho Clowncore is goofy, they stick to the bit very seriously and they sell it well. Or like slipknot back in the day before everyone knew who they actually were... it was badass. Dont get me wrong i love you guys just the way u are really. i litterally listen to Acrid Cannon, Golden Mouth of Ruin, and Drain of Incarnation daily. Making good music is whats most important. 👍🤘
I know fuck all about writing music but Atonement seems like a good example of what Baard is talking about. The drum work is awesome but also leaves the spotlight on the riff.
It's like Stillbirth where they always wear swim trunks
Great interview, I always love the deep dive questions. BKP’s are amazing, love my Mule set and getting my Abraxas set soon! Cheers!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! Plenty more on the channel like this one.
🎉🎉🎉 agreed!
Start with a slower version of how you ended the song, then transition it into a short breakdown and build up from there
i was at the hindley performance and got a view from behind the main speakers. absolutely unreal performance, and the perfect view to watch the drumming
"Live music = real music". it's amazing the impact it has...thank goodness I don't have to be perfect every moment. All my friends are best heard live. It's them!
This is honestly an amazing conversation. Good job Joe.
Thank you! Plenty more on the channel :)
Such a dream guy Rudy❤
Absolutely agree!!
Well said
First time I saw Archspire was the tour that they wore those swim shorts on. It made the show even better. Not to mention Oli’s great stage comedy 😂. I like a band that isn’t serious at all times
Jay has a shop??
Love you, KY boys ❤❤❤
Im so happy for this band that they continued together. Grateful to have their music. I finally got to see them live a few days ago and it was the best show i have been to. Thanks for this video!
My pleasure!

Layne Staley for me
I like the discussion about how normal people have totally different expectations from music than music nerds or musicians. I don't care what people listen to, but these days there seems to be this insistence that everything is a democracy, as if "appealing to the lowest common denominator" is the metric by which art should be judged as being of high quality. But actually it's the opposite. Most people don't know shit about, or even like, classical composers, nor great painters or authors. They'll simply pay lip service to it because they know "smart people said it's good so I have to say it's good." But as far as "mass appeal is the metric for artistry," all of history's greatest names would be considered utter failures. Mozart isn't a household name because his music has mass appeal, it's because the cultural elite (who had an education in music) kept him relevant. Honestly, I could rant about how the idea of democracy has poisoned all of modern culture, but I think my point has been made.
When I tried to play g chord My pinky finger was saying : "are you serious ?" Because in every note pinky goes faster than most of the fingers in the chords 😂😂😂😂😂
We love ya brother
Clint I love you brother and I pray 🙏🏼 for you and the rest of band often. Peace and Love to all you guys ! We are all in this together. Thanks for the inspiration and the years of extraordinary music !
can’t get better than the Vool.. I wish we could get a US tour
Best live band ever.
You can respect the skill while also acknowledging the guy is a bit of a pompous douche 😆 Funny he's says this sort of thing about modern players, when he's inspired scores of modern players that he probably doesn't even have time to listen to. Guitar players from modern metal bands like Amaranthe, Unleash the Archers, Alestorm. They can all shred faster than most players from 30 years ago, it just isn't their only priority.
This is a great breakdown! The build into that final chorus gets me every time, especially with that triplet in the drums just before the bass drops down. If you are looking for other songs to break down, would love “The Sky is Red” by Leprous or maybe something by Rhapsody of Fire
Ooh Leprous could be a shout. Glad to her you enjoyed the video!
FUCK YEA, MORE TOOL... sorry.. you should do Rosetta Stoned & Lost Keys (its one long song) next
I'll try and vary things a bit, but there's so much detail in Tool's music that I don't doubt I'll visit their stuff again...
@@Joerowleymusicalright sweet
This is an INCREDIBLE breakdown! Love your understanding and explanation of this POWERFUL track!! More please!
Thank you!
Super underrated imo!
Let me know what I missed!
One TINY thing I forgot, is that the drum fill at the end finishes on the two floor toms as the bass riff comes in, just like the very first thing you hear in the song!
