Jayanta and Manik are the fictional detective characters created by Bengali novelist Hemendra Kumar Roy. He wrote number of detective fictions of Jayanta-Manik which is considered one of the most popular children's literature in Bengal.
Jayanta and his friend cum assistant Manik alias Maniklal are amateur detective of Kolkata. They solve mysteries privately and help police to track down real culprit. Both are nationalistic, courageous and intelligent. Police inspector Sundar Babu very often takes help of those detective duos. Sundar Babu is bit comical and foody. Jayanta follows latest science technique like hypnotism, fingerprint theory to solve the cases. Jayanta has habit of playing with flute and taking snuff in his off time.
Hemendra Kumar Roy (2 September 1888 - 18 April 1963) was an Indian Bengali writer noted for his contribution to the early development of the genre of children's literature in the language. He was a noted contributor to the early development of Bengali detective fiction with his 'Jayanta-Manik' and adventurist 'Bimal-Kumar' stories, dealing with the exploits of Jayanta, his assistant Manik, and police inspector Sunderbabu. Roy also the translated the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyám into Bengali. Roy's 'Ajab Deshe Amala' is a well-known translation of Alice in Wonderland.
In 1925, Hemendrakumar Ray became the editor of Nachghar. Apart from this magazine, he helped edit other literary magazines including Rongmoshal. During the next few decades, Hemendrakumar Ray wrote over 80 books for children. He was monumental in contributing a body of detective, horror, and science-fiction work that would form a substantial portion of the early literature for children in Bengali. In 1930, he wrote his first detective story which was published in Mouchak. He is best remembered as the creator of Bimal-Kumar, the adventurer duo and Jayanta-Manik the detective duo. It was Bimal-Kumar's adventure story Jokher Dhan, for which he is famous in Bengali literature for children.
জয়ন্ত ও তার সহকারী বন্ধু মানিক বাঙালি সাহিত্যিক হেমেন্দ্রকুমার রায়ের দুই কাল্পনিক গোয়েন্দা চরিত্র। বাংলায় কিশোর পাঠ্য গোয়েন্দা কাহিনীর ভেতর জয়ন্ত-মানিক এবং সুন্দরবাবুর কীর্তিকাহিনী অগ্রগণ্য।
জয়ন্তের প্রথম আত্মপ্রকাশ ঘটে জয়ন্তের কীর্তি গল্পে। জয়ন্ত ও মানিক দুই অভিন্ন হৃদয় বন্ধু। তারা, বিশেষত জয়ন্ত একজন সাহসী, ক্ষুরধার বুদ্ধিসম্পন্ন তরুন। রহস্যভেদের নেশায় দেশে ও বিদেশের বিভিন্ন জায়গায় পাড়ি দিয়েছে এই জুটি। জয়ন্ত শুধু বুদ্ধিমানই নয় অত্যন্ত বলশালী পুরুষ। জয়ন্তের একমাত্র নেশা নস্য নেওয়া। সে অবসর সময়ে বাঁশি বাজাতে পছন্দ করে। গোয়েন্দা পুলিশের বিপুলবপু দারোগা সুন্দরবাবু প্রায়ই তাদের সংগী হন। তিনি খাদ্যরসিক ও পেটুক বাঙালির প্রকৃষ্ট উদাহরণ। প্রাতরাশে এক সঙ্গে সাতটা ডিমের পোচ গলাধঃকরণ করেন। কথায় কথায় 'হুম' বলা তার মুদ্রাদোষ। মানিকের অভ্যাস তার সাথে রসিকতা করা। এই দারোগার সঙ্গে গোয়েন্দা জয়ন্তের সদ্ভাব ছিল, রহস্য সমাধানে জয়ন্ত-মানিকের দ্বারস্থ হতেন তিনি।
জয়ন্তের কীর্তি গল্পে প্রথম এই গোয়েন্দার সৃষ্টি করেন হেমেন্দ্রকুমার। বাংলা সাহিত্যে গোয়েন্দা চরিত্রগুলির ভেতর জয়ন্ত অনন্য। কিশোর কিশোরীদের ভেতর অতি জনপ্রিয় গোয়েন্দা জয়ন্তের অজস্র কাহিনী লিখেছেন তিনি। তার অন্য সৃষ্টি এডভেঞ্চারিস্ট বিমল - কুমারের সাথেও জয়ন্ত মিলিতভাবে রহস্য সন্ধানে যোগ দিয়েছে। জয়ন্তের গোয়েন্দাগিরি নিয়ে অন্যান্য গল্প ও উপন্যাসগুলির অন্যতম ; মানুষ পিশাচ, নৃমুণ্ড শিকারী, কাপালিকের কবলে, ভেনাস ছোরার রহস্য, সাজাহানের ময়ূর, কাঁচের কফিন, একরত্তি মাটি, খানিকটা তামার তার, ছত্রপতির ছোরা, হত্যা হাহাকারে ইত্যাদি।
