Legit met a Mrs. Butok once. I think I'm misremembering the spelling, but it really was pronounced like "buttock". . I hesitated before saying her name, said it a bit slow in that sound-it-out way one does when they're sure they're going to publically mispronounce something. She didn't correct me, didn't say anything. . Just gave me this dead-eyed slightly-pursed lips look like she was daring me to ask if that really was her name (I knew it was; it was on her ID and she was old enough to belong to a generation of socially-pressured, not-to-be-questioned tradition of married name changes). I didn't, because I'm not a fool, and managed to get through the rest of the transaction -- this was in customer service -- without saying her name at all. . It made me glad I was born when I was, and that I never changed my name when I got married, even though my then-husband's name was considerably less awkward than that poor woman's.
I grew up with an entire family of kids who had the last name “Butt”. Three boys with one sister. All four of those kids were known for cracking heads. No one DARED to mess with those kids. The boys were all short, but very strong. Fast and scrappy. The eldest brother was legendary in our neighborhood (particularly in high school) and actually ended up fighting professionally for awhile. I guess with a name like Butt you either fold up or fight, and well.. they chose to fight! Edit: I also knew a family named “Gay”. A boy my age (we were/are friends) and his younger sister. Just as we (the son & I) were entering high school, in 1988, their dad had their surname legally changed to “Gauge”.
I've never known of anyone personally with an unusual last name but when I was in middle school a way long time there were 2 guidance counselors who worked at the middle school that I went to who were married to each other and their last name was Butts.
