Classical Grooming
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 26 พ.ย. 2021
This channel is dedicated to classical forms of grooming, exploring historical and modern barbershop products, styles, and experiences. We prefer to review these forms with some historical and cultural contexts when practical, and to promote grooming less as an act of vanity, and more of an exercise in self-care and personal expression of self-worth.
Currently, we focus on products and styles that have had appeal to American men through the 20th century to today. We'd eventually like to venture out into similar studies of male grooming throughout the world, and find collaborators that can share classical grooming perspectives of women as well.
We appreciate your participation in this venture, and ask you to subscribe and support the channel in any way that you can.

Consort HAIR SPRAY: History and Product Review
I think the Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum is far superior. This may work as the finial touch at The Barbershop just to get you out the door till you can reach your car then by that time it's gone. That's fine it won't prevent you using your preferred scent. But it isn't anything more then that which you should keep in mind before spending your money on it.
I haven't used British Sterling in decades. I may pick up a bottle. I have Clubman. I may get Jeris Musk also.
Let me know what you think of it!
Wow. Wildroot. Haven't seen that in ages. I'd want the original packaging only as a collectors item. The old commercial brings back memories too!
I would love to get the original packaging myself! Very cool.
So that’s the kind of hair cream I need. Currently using lotion.
is there any diff between Clubman Eau de portugal and the pinaud hair tonic (the yellow color one) as far as what they do to the hair and how they feel in the hair etc?
As far as I can tell? No. The main difference is the fragrance. I did a comparison earlier: th-cam.com/video/aGN8KkmoDRY/w-d-xo.html
I’ve been meaning to try this for awhile. Sounds good, and of course, it is a classic. I’ll probably add it to my rotation of Vitalis, Brylcreem, and Groom and Clean. Thanks, Classical Grooming. Another great review. Thanks again.
Liked your review of TABAC. A perfume I started using in the 1980s. Good on price & freshness. I have a mixed collection of fragrances. Two that you might be interested in are Mandate from 1976 & Blue Stratos, around about the same time. Both retailing here in the UK £6 & £12. The Blue Stratos range is good. Originally brought out by the American company SHULTON. If you like Old Spice. Then Blue Stratos is similar. Hopefully you will review both items at some point.
Thanks for your comments and suggestions! I hope to try out both of those product, having heard about them a little over a year ago, but time and finances have prevented me from getting into everything that I want. They are on the list though! Thanks again.
It sounds like a possible scent to wear during Winter holidays when those fragrances are around everywhere you go anyways.
Yeah, that makes sense!
I love scents of classic Barbershop tradition. Great channel.
I love this so far i subscribed 👍🏽🙏🏽💯
Thanks for the subscribe!
Does it smell like either Brut or Old Spice?
Much closer to Brut than Old Spice!
I’ve always read and watched terrible things about this stuff but if CG likes it, I know it’s ok to try it out! ~Jason
I do! But it's not going to be for everyone.
Thanks for reviewing these forgotten after shaves. There seems to be a whole array of them available ebay for cheap. There is one by crusellas called tobacco. Smells like kouros.
Really? I'd love to give that a try. Thanks for the compliment! I really enjoy trying out little known classics.
@ I have been collecting for years. Let me know if there is anything you would like to try out..I’d be happy to gift you some decants/bottles. You seem like an honest genuine reviewer
I’ve always had fantastic results with any of the Sterling soaps and splashes I’ve purchased. Very solid performers and high quality! ~Jason
Amen! I hear they have an homage to English Leather that I'm interested in trying.
Alberto Morillas has more recently designed for Fragrance one. Those are very good.
CK One pretty much started the “Mall” scent phase of fragrance. GAP, Banana Republic all the stores started putting out these airy unisex style scents, and if you wandered the once great Mall scene anywhere you would smell them. I use to really enjoy this new direction of scent. As was mentioned here, Polo Green and Drakkar Noire had been big on the scene until this point. IMO the scents that represented the 90’s for men would be Acqua Di Gio (Also Roberto) and JPG Le Malle. For women, Sunflowers. I always felt that the nineties was the biggest transition point for fragrance. It broadened the male audience, men that didn’t wear fragrance started to wear a scent daily, even if it was AXE. Thanks for the video, I too and not the biggest fan of CK One and current formulations are a little bit scratchy in the air. I think the closest thing to this level of success for CK would be Eternity, but that was more of a bridge profile for where the 90’s would take male scents, and coincidently the nose for that was the creator of 80’s Polo Green.
Yes, now that you mention it, I do remember the mall fragrances popping up around this time! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on THE '90's fragrances for you.
Is Stetson considered a seasonal fragrance, or can you wear it year round? Thanks Another excellent review from Classical Grooming.
I think that you could wear it year round. I've worn it in the summer heat (just less of it) and it wasn't sharp or cloying to my nose. Thanks for the question!
I’ve heard of this but have never worn it or smelled it. I’m sure it’s ok. I graduated HS in 93 and for me, THE scent of the era was Ralph Lauren in the green bottle. Seems like everyone I knew was wearing that then! lol Hope you had a wonderful holiday classical grooming! ~Jason
Thank you! I hope the same for you! I wonder if they still make Ralph Lauren; I don't think that I have tried it.
@classicalgrooming What?? Polo Green was legendary. The new formula is missing some key elements, banned components (oakmoss) so the old Corsair bottles are pretty pricey. The new bottles have the basics of the profile, but lack the magic (and strength) of the OG.
@@jamiechown7438 Absolutely! However, technically, Polo (Green) is a 1970's fragrance, so that's why it is not in the '90's category. I've heard what you have said about the changes in PG. That being said, I'm curious, would you still recommend it to someone?
@classicalgrooming 1978 in fact, thus it's popularity through the 80's. I LOVE Polo, but the new take is not the same. Honestly so many people really did love the OG through the 80's as it was everywhere, and strong. I have bought many clones claiming to be like the original, but none of them are. If you can get the current formulation on the cheap, then yes worth checking out. I still like it, but people on Fragrantica will give the standard love/hate for it now.
First!
Never saw anything like that out there on shelves, even at Sally Beauty Salone.
Yes, it is a little difficult to find these days. Barber supply stores still carry it, as well as the Pinaud-Clubman website.
I didn’t know people actually used this outside of certain folk magic circles.
When Gillette, which owns Old Spice, went into their attack all masculinity as toxic, I switched to Clubman and have never looked back. It's my favorite daytime scent.
This is a classic I’ve been wearing since 1998 when I got it for my 15th bday from my sister
I just bought a bottle of Williams Lectric shave, and I'm curious to see how, and if, it aids in shaving. I use a Phillips electric razor.
It's been a really long time since I used Lectric Shave. I remember it smelled nice and it did help reduce irritation from the electric razor that I used as a teenager. Tell us how it works for you!
A classical groomer used an electric razor? Haha, just kidding. I sure will. It sounds weird shaving on anything but a dry face.
@@classicalgrooming I've had it for about a week now, and put it through some of its paces. I enjoy it! It settles in nicely so you don't have to wait too long before you can start shaving, and because it's not thick it doesn't get into your razor blades. While it doesn't significantly cut down on the time it takes me to shave, it does prevent rashes and irritation. It smells nice too. My only criticism of inexpensive Williams products is the cheap plastic bottles they come in. The hole is really small with a wide cap opening, so it's difficult to pour a healthy amount into your hand without even more splashing everywhere, and your best bet is to do it over the sink. I had an empty pump bottle of gold bond lying around, so I poured it, slowly but eventually, into the bottle so I can pump it into my hand. There might be a little moisturizer hanging on the sides mixing in, but when has that ever been a problem. :) Plus, like Aqua Velva Ice blue, you do get two bottles instead of one for the price of five dollars, so it's a good value. Just have a pump or spray bottle to pour it into. It's strange, because I've been shaving for 15 years and I'd never heard of pre-shave until now. It makes sense, as before I would wash and dry my face to get it ready. I wouldn't call it essential when shaving with an electric razor, but it's definitely nice to have. - It also works with below the belt.
@@jeffreyrainey1015 Thanks for sharing your experience with us, and I'm glad it's been a positive experience!
Proraso Green is my go to. The pre- and post- shave balms are superb!
I intend to try this soon.
I'm a retired Barber of over 50 years experience. Jeris hair tonic is a Barbershop tradition even since my childhood days and I'm 72. As a small boy the Barber would apply it to my hair each trip in. I still love the old fashioned Barbershop can't get it out of my system. I been a Barber since I was 18.
You and me both! Thanks for the comments and adding so much to the channel!
It's hard to wrong with anything Clubman in my 72 years experience.
I never tried much Gables products I always stick to Clubman line of offerings. I try some of Gables on your recommendation just out of curiosity.
I used Aspen in my younger days on occasion. I didn't stick with after the first bottle however.
I used Halston Z-14 Cologne for a number of years as a young man in late 70s early 80s. I received compliments when I used it. I moved on to other fragrances and haven't used it since but may go back to it occasionally. Good insights.
As a retired Barber I know that scientifically the only thing that penetrates hair down to the follicles is and Amino Acid Protein. So unless this product is formulated in such a way it has no affect on hair follicles. It only cleans the hair. That is a very pricey product for something that only cleans hair. A bar of hand soap will clean your hair. Just make sure it doesn't have oils in it that leaves it in your hair after you finish. So unless you enjoy the scent of Clubman Pinuad Aftershave so much that you're willing to spend over $8.00 to get this shampoo I'd suggest you look elsewhere.
In The Barbershops of the past going back to the 1940s at least the hair tonic used in most was Jeris. Both with oil or without. I never used oil in my hair but many others did. The oil free Jeris hair tonic is very pleasant to use since oil is no longer used by most men. Even bald men can find good use for oil free hair tonic because maintaining a clean scalp is one of the benefits that comes from hair tonic.
Jeris is one of my favorites! I've never used the one with oil myself.
Good to know. I've been curious about it but not tried it as yet. I'm a big fan of Clubman products as well. Gin and Tonic with a twist of Lime was once a favorite drink of mine. So if the fragrance is along those lines I should be pleased.
I truly enjoy Clubman Special Reserve. Wonderful cold weather scent. Interesting you compare it to British Sterling. That's a brand I was once fond of as well back in the late 1960s before it disappeared from the American market. I enjoy your channel.
Thanks!
After hearing your review of both Clubman Lime in a different video and Gables in this one I think this one will be the one I purchase. This will be the first time I passed over a Clubman product in favor of another!
I prefer Drops of Lime over Clubman Lime Sec, myself. I hope that you like it!
I like Clubman Bay Rum. It's an old standby.
I’m familiar with Jovan but have never tried it. Interesting description on the scent.
Thanks!
Awesome!
I gotta try that. lavender + woody? abercrombie is the one that worries me cuz I don't like smelling like zoolander.
I’m a huge fan of the channel, do you think you could make a top 10 or 20 video for fragrances that are the best for 25 bucks or under or cheap date night fragrances? Been looking for some and you’re the best guy for cheap but fantastic working smelling products
I have a hard time making "Best of" lists because tastes are so varied. I will think about it, though...
I rather like seeing this channel displaying many of the older hair creams, hair loations, hair gels that were once available for men back in the day, which only two, maybe three, as some places, not many, carry Wildroot hair cream these days are available today here in 2024.
@@danbasta3677 Funny that you mention it, because I have a short review of Wildroot Cream coming up in the next two weeks.
❤
I love "brushless" shave creams , but they get clogged up in the multi-blade cartridges.
Yep! If that annoys you too much, you may want to try Clubman's brushless. Thinner, less clogging th-cam.com/video/T9UP16Ocg8U/w-d-xo.html
I love Lapidus pour homme, i dont get the rotten pineapple, maybe my skin chemistry is different... Thanks for the nice review!
Sweet and fruity....😂
I've used it for 30 years often to rave reviews from women. What do I care what other men think? The opinion of the ladies are where it's at for me and theirs are positive. Not so much now in my early 70s but as a man of 42 I was a female favorite! lol
I like the way you think!
This isn't a classic product from Clubman even though they are a Classic mens company. I have no issue disliking it.
I never have been a big Musk fan. Not my kind of a fragrance.
I never was much of a Musk enthusiast myself. It's a rare occasion I use it. As small as portion as that bottle however may not be a bad investment.
I appreciate the feedback! Yes, its not a big investment. If you like the original Pinaud Clubman aftershave, you may like this one.
Creapy jars after shaves are okay
Somewhat like “Pledge” Furniture Polish. Wow! I think that this would be way too sweet for me. I probably will stick with the various versions of Brut that you’ve previously reviewed. I like most of them. Thank you, Classical Grooming for another excellent and informative review.
