Classical Grooming
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 26 พ.ย. 2021
This channel is dedicated to classical forms of grooming, exploring historical and modern barbershop products, styles, and experiences. We prefer to review these forms with some historical and cultural contexts when practical, and to promote grooming less as an act of vanity, and more of an exercise in self-care and personal expression of self-worth.
Currently, we focus on products and styles that have had appeal to American men through the 20th century to today. We'd eventually like to venture out into similar studies of male grooming throughout the world, and find collaborators that can share classical grooming perspectives of women as well.
We appreciate your participation in this venture, and ask you to subscribe and support the channel in any way that you can.
Thank you again for all you do!

Shaving with AA Shaving soap: An HONEST review
I agree with your review. I have used Consort hair spray for years and it works well for my very fine, fly-away" hair. Just one thing to watch out for. A couple of times this past year a new can of hairspray would not spray "normally". It comes out in drop-lets rather than a mist type spray. I have come to understand that the offending cans probably were not pressurized and shaking them doesn't help (the sloshing around in the can doesn't diminish) - but these cans don't leak either. For the good pressurized cans, the sloshing around inside the cans goes away after a few shakes. When you are at the store and take a can of Consort Hairspray for men off the shelf, shake it before adding to your cart.
I always do balm first after doing it the other way a few times to begin with, it helps a lot
Great information for some products I have never heard of. I would suggest in 2025 try old school, Astoria, and union by moon soaps I think they would be right up your alley. The Quiet Man from Wet the face would also be another one based on your reviews you would enjoy. Wet the face and moon soaps have incredible lathers. Interested to hear your opinion on Havana. Great video.
Thanks for the suggestions! I'm hoping that I'll be able to sell off some of the old gear, so that I can try some new. Thanks for being part of the channel!
Nice video classical grooming! I am familiar with some of these products and others not as much. Always enjoy learning about all the different products. A very pleasurable watch. Thanks for sharing.
I started using Brut aftershave when I was a teenager. Women like it. Never banged one who didn't like it.
I have a bottle with the silver medallion and that's the real vintage. Smells wonderful
Hi , i see you got Equate Hair Regrowth Treatment Minoxidil Topical Aerosol in the back. Are you still using it? do you recommend that product?
Yes, it does work, but I am no longer using it. I've had headaches and I stopped using it, as well as some other products, just in case.
Happy New Year, sir ! I agree with you about Avon’s Mens products. When I first encountered Wild Country, in the late 1970’s , it and other products of theirs seemed great. Now they’re just okay (at best).:Thank you for all you do.
Trying to buy you coffee but it gives me 404. Re: Avon for women...tastes have changed enough that SONNET is definitely wearable by men today. I do enjoy your reviews and hope you continue.
Thanks for the notification and the encouragement, and I have fixed the link! buymeacoffee.com/classicalgrooming I'll have to look into Sonnet. Thank you for being part of the channel!
Very happy new year to you CG! Take care my friend!
Happy New Year to you as well!
I thought you were going to use the Lucky Tiger hair tonic for the New Year. It's great!
It is good! But I'm out, and I have a lot more hair products that I like and need to use up!
@@classicalgrooming oh ok so you already used up your bottle. you go through them quick don't you? i use my tonic sparingly.
Looking forward to more of your testing mem's haur creams, hair loations and hair oils along with after shave and colognes. Hope you continue for yet a long time within the future. Your work in introducing these products are more than appreciated. Thank You for all that you have done, all that you have accomplished in all of this.
Thank you for your encouragement and kind words!
Personally, I usually use some clear shaving gel, Vanderhagen Shave Gel as a preshave to make the razor slicker, or sometimes when my beard is thicker, I use Vanderhagen Shave Butter as a preshave to soften the beard, and it works great!
Thanks for the comment! I'm not familiar with Vanderhagen products (yet).
It is is the best shaving soap I know. I am dutch. I shave my whole life “ wet”. And every morning. I use the soap a little different. This is the way I do it. I make the stick of soap warm in my hands so I kan pres it in my container. Then I give 3 til 5 drops of water to the soap and make my brusch soapy. I make my face wet wet warm water and go with high speed over my face until it is foamy. Great! No irritation, no pain. Greeting from the Netherlands, Frank
Great tips! I will have to try this out myself. I'm always looking to improve my shave. Thanks for sharing with the channel!
Yes! I know Curve cologne for sure. I use it daily. Not the one from the 90's, but I do use it. I really like it alot! Smells good, but not overpowering. (like Axe Spray) How long have you been shaving with a DE razor? I got my Rockwell for Christmas and I absolutely love it! My new all time favorite razor and go to for sure.
I've been using a DE razor consistently for about 4 years. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about Curve!
Greetings sir, Have you tried clubman eau de Portugal hair tonic? if so how is it? also, it says that it was made for people with light hair color. What does that mean? people with dark hair shouldn't use eau de portugal?
I have! People with any hair color can use Eau de Portugal. It is offered for people with light hair, in lieu of Eau de Quinine which can, with time, tint lighter color hair pink. I prefer the scent of Eau de Portugal myself.
@ oh ok I think I understand. So if my hair is black I can still use eau de Portugal? Without it turning my hair light?
@@BeautyofScent Yep!
Hello. There are 2 versions of this tonic. Mine has "Acqua" as the first ingredient. The other version has "Alcohol" as first ingredient. Could you check yours to see which version you have?
Unfortunately, I have used my bottle up and have not replaced it. However, I seem to remember mine having water "Acqua" as the first.
Boyfriend just got this as a gift from his mom and i love the smell. It starts strong, but then mellows into a very pleasant baby powder smell haha. Really love it.
Don’t remember this one at all. 🤔 Hope you and your family have a very merry Christmas CG! ~Jason
Merry Christmas to you as well!
I have the splash on aftershave and it’s great, I love it. I also can’t seem to pick out one particular note, it reminds me of flowery baby powder but also manly and rugged, I don’t know how else to describe it but my goddd it’s insanely good. I wish it lasted longer though
I love it myself! If the splash-on is colorless, you can try it on clothes. It last nearly all day for me when I do that.
How do you recommend to wash this particular product out of hair?
It comes out of my hair pretty easily with shampoo, as long as you don't use too much of the brilliantine.
Bob Hope and Kirk Douglas both lived to be 100 years old do you suppose Pinuad Clubman Citrus Musk had anything to do with it???? lol
Maybe! It probably gave them something to look forward to in the morning! ;)
Just bought 3 bottles, which at me being 64, should last me the rest of my life. Back in 1981, my second girlfriend, Judy, said she loved to smell 1-12 on a man, and I like an idiot, didn't get it. Maybe out of nostalgia, I finally got some, and in fact am wearing some as I type this. On 6+ hours and it still smells great. I can see why (even as a straight man,)why Judy loved it.. I also have 3 bottles of Z-14. Between these two Halstons, along with some other good scents, I'm set.
Fantastic! Halston makes good stuff. Thanks for sharing your experience!
I’m not familiar with this product but sounds like something right up my alley. Gonna have to give it a try. Thanks!
Let us know what you think!
How can I get one of this?
www.clubman.com/ or sometimes amazon.co
Great video!
Very interesting video but I didn’t see anything I can’t live without CG. Happy holidays my dear friend!
Happy Holidays to you as well!
Is that a Muhle razor?
No it is a "Black Beauty", a Gillette razor from the 70's. Thanks for the comment!
I once used Dakkar Nior decades ago. It replaced Halston N14 with me as my most used scent. Then Dakkar was replaced by Joop for about thirty years. Now I'm much more universal. I use many scents I started out with decades ago. Clubman, English Leather, Canoe, Halston, Aqua Velva, and I'll be adding back British Sterling to the mix soon. Still have the Joop as well. I spread it around.
I do the same. Thanks for the comment!
When I use a DE razor, I usually use the Vanderhagen blades (pretty decent, much better than King C Gillette blades), but I think I might pick some of these up, I like a nice sharp blade on my face!
I think the Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum is far superior. This may work as the finial touch at The Barbershop just to get you out the door till you can reach your car then by that time it's gone. That's fine it won't prevent you using your preferred scent. But it isn't anything more then that which you should keep in mind before spending your money on it.
I haven't used British Sterling in decades. I may pick up a bottle. I have Clubman. I may get Jeris Musk also.
Let me know what you think of it!
Wow. Wildroot. Haven't seen that in ages. I'd want the original packaging only as a collectors item. The old commercial brings back memories too!
I would love to get the original packaging myself! Very cool.
@@classicalgroomingIt use to come in a glass bottle hour glass design back many, many moom ago. It has a talc fragrance to it, an excellent cream to train your hair to the desired hairstyle you prefer to have. Wildroot Hair Cream Is an excellent product, however as with everything else, only a small application of this product is necessary.
So that’s the kind of hair cream I need. Currently using lotion.
is there any diff between Clubman Eau de portugal and the pinaud hair tonic (the yellow color one) as far as what they do to the hair and how they feel in the hair etc?
As far as I can tell? No. The main difference is the fragrance. I did a comparison earlier: th-cam.com/video/aGN8KkmoDRY/w-d-xo.html
I’ve been meaning to try this for awhile. Sounds good, and of course, it is a classic. I’ll probably add it to my rotation of Vitalis, Brylcreem, and Groom and Clean. Thanks, Classical Grooming. Another great review. Thanks again.
@@Michael_R1957And you will find that Wildroot Hair Cream is an excellent hair cream to train your hair with to the desired hairstyle that you prefer. Using this hair cream sparingly, about once a week and every other day hair washings are the combination of an excellent source of excellence in combing your hair with. It has a talc fragrance to it that smells realy, really great to. You'll be please with it's performance and the results it will bring.
Liked your review of TABAC. A perfume I started using in the 1980s. Good on price & freshness. I have a mixed collection of fragrances. Two that you might be interested in are Mandate from 1976 & Blue Stratos, around about the same time. Both retailing here in the UK £6 & £12. The Blue Stratos range is good. Originally brought out by the American company SHULTON. If you like Old Spice. Then Blue Stratos is similar. Hopefully you will review both items at some point.
Thanks for your comments and suggestions! I hope to try out both of those product, having heard about them a little over a year ago, but time and finances have prevented me from getting into everything that I want. They are on the list though! Thanks again.
It sounds like a possible scent to wear during Winter holidays when those fragrances are around everywhere you go anyways.
Yeah, that makes sense!
I love scents of classic Barbershop tradition. Great channel.
I love this so far i subscribed 👍🏽🙏🏽💯
Thanks for the subscribe!
Does it smell like either Brut or Old Spice?
Much closer to Brut than Old Spice!
I’ve always read and watched terrible things about this stuff but if CG likes it, I know it’s ok to try it out! ~Jason
I do! But it's not going to be for everyone.
Thanks for reviewing these forgotten after shaves. There seems to be a whole array of them available ebay for cheap. There is one by crusellas called tobacco. Smells like kouros.
Really? I'd love to give that a try. Thanks for the compliment! I really enjoy trying out little known classics.
@ I have been collecting for years. Let me know if there is anything you would like to try out..I’d be happy to gift you some decants/bottles. You seem like an honest genuine reviewer
I’ve always had fantastic results with any of the Sterling soaps and splashes I’ve purchased. Very solid performers and high quality! ~Jason
Amen! I hear they have an homage to English Leather that I'm interested in trying.
Alberto Morillas has more recently designed for Fragrance one. Those are very good.
CK One pretty much started the “Mall” scent phase of fragrance. GAP, Banana Republic all the stores started putting out these airy unisex style scents, and if you wandered the once great Mall scene anywhere you would smell them. I use to really enjoy this new direction of scent. As was mentioned here, Polo Green and Drakkar Noire had been big on the scene until this point. IMO the scents that represented the 90’s for men would be Acqua Di Gio (Also Roberto) and JPG Le Malle. For women, Sunflowers. I always felt that the nineties was the biggest transition point for fragrance. It broadened the male audience, men that didn’t wear fragrance started to wear a scent daily, even if it was AXE. Thanks for the video, I too and not the biggest fan of CK One and current formulations are a little bit scratchy in the air. I think the closest thing to this level of success for CK would be Eternity, but that was more of a bridge profile for where the 90’s would take male scents, and coincidently the nose for that was the creator of 80’s Polo Green.
Yes, now that you mention it, I do remember the mall fragrances popping up around this time! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on THE '90's fragrances for you.
Is Stetson considered a seasonal fragrance, or can you wear it year round? Thanks Another excellent review from Classical Grooming.
I think that you could wear it year round. I've worn it in the summer heat (just less of it) and it wasn't sharp or cloying to my nose. Thanks for the question!
@@classicalgrooming, Thank you very much. Please keep up the wonderful reviews. Thanks again.
I’ve heard of this but have never worn it or smelled it. I’m sure it’s ok. I graduated HS in 93 and for me, THE scent of the era was Ralph Lauren in the green bottle. Seems like everyone I knew was wearing that then! lol Hope you had a wonderful holiday classical grooming! ~Jason
Thank you! I hope the same for you! I wonder if they still make Ralph Lauren; I don't think that I have tried it.
@classicalgrooming What?? Polo Green was legendary. The new formula is missing some key elements, banned components (oakmoss) so the old Corsair bottles are pretty pricey. The new bottles have the basics of the profile, but lack the magic (and strength) of the OG.
@@jamiechown7438 Absolutely! However, technically, Polo (Green) is a 1970's fragrance, so that's why it is not in the '90's category. I've heard what you have said about the changes in PG. That being said, I'm curious, would you still recommend it to someone?
@classicalgrooming 1978 in fact, thus it's popularity through the 80's. I LOVE Polo, but the new take is not the same. Honestly so many people really did love the OG through the 80's as it was everywhere, and strong. I have bought many clones claiming to be like the original, but none of them are. If you can get the current formulation on the cheap, then yes worth checking out. I still like it, but people on Fragrantica will give the standard love/hate for it now.
First!
Never saw anything like that out there on shelves, even at Sally Beauty Salone.
Yes, it is a little difficult to find these days. Barber supply stores still carry it, as well as the Pinaud-Clubman website.
I didn’t know people actually used this outside of certain folk magic circles.
