Both the modern republican and modern demo(KKK)rat party have their roots in the confederacy. The republican party was original formed as 'the party of the republic' AKA a party that would advocate for the union sticking together when it was apparent that it might split. There wasn't any 'official party platform' other than that, there were left- and right- wing elements in it, former Whig party and former Democrat party members that joined it. After the civil war and reconstruction though, the republican party almost ceased to exist, as it's main purpose was now complete. fast forward to the 20th century. The democrats formed 2 factions: The dixiecrats, which would continue on the racist ideology of the plantation owners, KKK, and essentially the old democrat party platform of Jim Crow, and the neo-democrats (modern democrats), who, instead of continuing the OVERT suppression of black people (because they new it was less and less popular), decided to bribe them with welfare to get their votes in order to keep themselves in power (If you can't beat em', bribe em' to stay in power). Obviously the dixiecrat party which was OVERTLY blatantly racist died out. But the modern democrats, which are COVERTLY racist, continues on. Meanwhile, the common folk of the confederacy who made up the foot soldiers, who never owned any slaves or had even seen a black individual before (due to living in tiny cabins in the woods), fought because they saw the north as invading their land. They had a very 'libertarian' mindset. Many of these confederate soldiers, when they saw slaves for the first time, were horrified, and wrote in their journals about it. Seeing as only the top 3% of whites in the south owned slaves, and only the top 1% had giant plantations, the vast majority of whites in the south fell along this mindset. They became a huge voting block. Anyway, to earn this block's vote, the republicans slowly started adopting their lassie-faire and libertarian positions in order to save themselves from extinction. This is the modern republican party. ugh. did not mean to write a whole essay LOL. Sorry that you had to read so much.

I don't blame you for your ancestors traitorousness. That's their shame! Those evils belong, rightfully and entirely, to them and them alone. In that losing, in what you have inherited from that loss, you found pride in the evils of slavery, racism, xenophobia, white supremacy, the, little-known, _'Black Codes',_ the Jim Crow laws, segregation, nationalism, oppression, intimidation and murder. And I, for the life of me, can not imagine why anyone would embrace those evils as if there is anything positive to be found in believing a lie; that lie being that those evils are moral, ethical, patriotic...or anything else that which is positive. I know it's hard to separate the facts from what has been told to some about that flag. Especially when you are growing up and everyone around you feels the same way about it.

@robdeal: The vast majority of the reason for the American Civil War was slavery, which was entirely supported and under-pinned by white supremacy. Yes, there were people who were black that supported white supremacy back then; just like there are people today who are black, Jewish, Hispanic, etc., who support white supremacy. @Raskol: I ask that question of anyone who supports/seems to support the white supremacist ideology in some specific way out of a desire to understand why anyone would support any 'traitor to the humans species' ideology; that specific ideology being but one example. What makes you think that they are from a "white country"? What makes a country "white" in your view? And why do you think it matters that they are from a "white country", based on what you consider to be "white"? It's not that I care that they are from a white country - it's that they support a 'traitor to the human species' ideology, it just happens to be that one; the demographical make-up of the country, of any country, of any geographical area is statistical background noise.
