Jordan in a taped interview before the Wizards stated that if he had been chasing stats, he never would have retired without scoring 30,000 points, or passing Wilt's scoring total. He got his 30,000 points and later passed Wilt, 40+ games into his second Wizards year. When he got his 30k points, the game was stopped and they had a league ceremony for it as he had arranged, as the team president of operations. He got an official trophy about the size of the Larry O'Brien Trophy for the season champion title, but for just getting to a distant 4th in that exclusive scorers' club (Kareem, Wilt, and Karl Malone already had 30k+, with no celebrations for achieving that mark). What MJ wanted, always, was to pass his main rivals for the GOAT title. That's why he said he had 'nothing left to prove' and so, had lost his motivation, when he retired the first time. Because Magic had failed to three-peat, which he'd just accomplished. Earlier in his career, he was furious to find out he'd been just two points shy of Wilt's all-star single game scoring record. He yelled at his scorekeeper (the all-star game was in Chicago, so Chicago's scorekeeper was there) for not telling him, so he could do it. That guy had been holding up two fingers to let him know, but MJ didn't catch it. And when MJ ended his career, he had the same 30.1 ppg average as Wilt (as rounded to the first decimal which is the way the NBA shows stats). But he was 0.05 ppg ahead of Wilt for bragging rights (Wilt's 30.07 ppg was rounded up, while MJ's 30.12 was rounded down). He could not play any more seasons with his low 20 ppg average or his career average would dip below the Big Dipper.

Floor Jordan was still deadly when he had the energy. Dude was averaging about 26ppg at one point before hurting his knee.

The Wizards gave up Sheed (for Strickland) and Webber (for Richmond), and extended the wrong guy (Howard). Richmond left the Wiz because Jordan signed on, and promptly won a title as a glorified benchwarmer with the Lakers. Makes you think if Jordan was a clout-chaser, he would have signed with LA. Jordan as an executive did well in shedding bad contracts, but somewhere along the line he and the ownership didn't see eye-to-eye. The decision to draft Kwame Brown was a head-scratcher, I would guess MJ liked Brand more than Pau, and then trading for Stackhouse. I understand that Rip wasn't the kind of shot creator and volume scorer Jordan wanted, and he needed someone else to carry the offense. Jordan's performance on the court was what you could expect from an older athlete - not his best. Putting it in context, he was away from competitive basketball for three seasons and even though he trained, his body was no longer used to the grind. For anybody on a different standard than him, he was at least one of the top ten wing players in the league in the two seasons he played. Abe Pollin's behavior after Jordan retired again really showed that management was unhappy with Jordan for some reason. I would surmise MJ's methods grated on the ownership, and likely because he wasn't really a great talent evaluator, preferring to stack his roster with his buddies or UNC/Duke alumni.

Jordan actually averaged right under 23 ppg in his first season with the Wizards at 22.9. The team was in playoff contention before he had season ending knee surgery. 37 wins was a big improvement from that previous season before M.J came out of another retirement. They were one of the best defensive teams as well. He actually made that franchise relevant. They were crap before he played for them!

Yes, up until he tore his meniscus in game 47 of his return season in 2001. He also entered that’s season healing from broken ribs sustained by Ron Artest in a pickup game. He was among the best shooting guards that season averaging 25/6/5 before his injury on 43% shooting; and he was only getting better. Even his shooting percentage, which was bad for him was still on par with the other shooting guards. Only 3 other players were averaging more than 25ppg (Iverson, Shaq and Pierce). Before his injury, he had Wizards winning 56% of their games (23% the season prior without him), and he was doing this with Rip Hamilton, their second best player, injured.

You guys can't tell me for the past 40 years has had been good. Nba players have become more and more spoiled brats, thanks to mainstream media and getting 20 and 30+ dollars to now to the 60+ million. In the 1980s they were also spoiled brats, but it was a slight difference than it was in the 1990s. Don't get me wrong, the 80s was harder than the 1990s, but those guys had it good, real good too. I'm pretty sure bill russell would of loved to make a extra 1 or 3 million dollars. In your giving them players options too. Mannnn you athletes today have it good and you still find ways to whine and complain and b*tch and moan and you have side jobs to as podcasters (which I still don't understand why). I know those 80s and 70s and 60s players are looking at you modern day athletes and even from the 2000s saying. Man I wish we had that kind of technology and film and medicine and sneakers and mainstream growing up and practice facilities and 5 star camp.

And you know who agrees with me on that? Shaq himself! So Shaq is probably the fifth best center in the history of basketball. This means he isn't even in the top 10 for best player. Detroit wasn't contending for a chip if Iverson came off the bench. He needs a lot of shots in his late career due to refs holding the whistle due to being assholes. Coming off the bench was stupid. Send him to the Lakers and make him come off the bench. A team that's sitting mid in the playoffs? No, he can start and you use the income he brought in during Free Agency....just a ridiculous idea. A team struggling to be in championship contention is asking ALLEN IVERSON to come off the bench after AvG over 29PPG with Denver with high Steals and Assist.
