Throwing WILD clay goes sideways
I dug some clay up out of the little river in Zebulon, NC. I wanted to see how it threw, and I was surprised and a little disappointed all at the same time. Throwing wild clay has been on my list of things to do for a long time and I am happy to have done it. I want to go hunting for different clay and see if I find something I really love.
I think the clay is lacking in larger clay particles, but I don't really know what to do to this clay to make it better. I want to see how it does in the kiln before I add anything to the clay. Let me know in the comments what you think it needs?

Changing the thermostat in my Skutt kiln
So looking forward to seeing your journey with this! I had construction done that tore up my whole backyard and ended up getting a TON of wild clay out of it (It has to be at least 8 5-gallon buckets worth, I haven't stored it all away yet). I've been scouring the internet on how to process and fire it ever since. The composition of this clay looks super similar to mine (I'm in NJ), really elastic and soft. It works so well with hand-building, but it collapsed when I worked with it on the wheel. Did you put any sand/temper in it? From what I understand, it could possibly help prevent cracking when drying/firing and also help provide structure so it isn't so floppy when throwing
Dang i honestly would have thrown it in the reclaim, good on you mate. Ill have to be more patient and maybe try this myself from now on
Amazing! Thank you
I am glad you enjoyed the video!
Can't wait to see it fired!! Fire it soon!
That video should be put in the next 2 weeks. I can't wait to see it.
Those look very nice!
I am really happy with them. I should have them through the kiln soon so the update should be interesting.
Nice! Would like to see how it looks after firing.
I am definitely going to show it after it's fired. I am going to run some tests and figure out what the firing range is.
The tutorial makes pulling so easy!
I plan on making an in depth tutorial on pulling walls soon.
10/10 video! Thank you for posting this!
Thank you!
A huge help!!! Thank you
Glad I could help
So glad I found you!! Great kiln load.
I'm glad you are here!
This is so helpful, im trying my own glazes at the moment, a hug from Chile.

If you don't have the machine, can you just wedge it?
Yes. You can just wedge, but a pugmill saves you time and effort.
Very good and clear explanations.
I am glad it was helpful!
Never really been interested in pottery and stud but since I found you from the Darkness I real love pottery I still don’t do pottery but I love all the creations you can do with pottery! Keep up the great work! ❤❤
Thank you! If you ever get the chance to get your hands dirty and play with some clay, take it. It's so much fun!
just found you t hanks for making videos

I'm not sure what you are asking?
Finally, someone called out important cons about low power at low speed. This shows that you really care and know what you are talking about. Thank you.
Thank you. I wish I had scripted this video. I do think it's a good buy and I put almost 100 hours on the motor in 3 years. I used it as a demo wheel for festivals and events because it was so lightweight. I don't think I was clear about how much testing I did on this wheel, but I'm glad people have found thus video helpful.
That bird booty though
Very satisfying
Glad you think so!
Hey man, great job on this video! Well paced and written. Interesting...You should do more like it!
Thanks, man. I have been trying to lurk in your live streams. I still need to watch the "find the burt" video. I think it would be cool if you did a video on how you name your mugs. It's such a cool idea and a fresh take on face mugs.
That spiral on the bottom though.

Digging the chill background music.
thanks. I spend to much time trying to find the right music, just to hate it later.
Saw your interview on Darkened Cyrus. Awesome convo. I wonder if adding something like | Pottery Basics | to the end of your video would improve your SEO? I'll definitely check out the rest of your channel. I don't do pottery but I have always enjoyed watching artists and craftsmen at work.
It was a lot of fun watching your interview. I will give that a shot, anything at this point is worth trying. Do you mostly do shorts? I have a buddy who will love your long-form content, retro, and perler is his life!
@@ZebulonPottery I do a mix of shorts and long form stuff. I guess technically by volume I have a lot more shorts then I have long form content. I try to put the most time and effort into my long form videos. The shorts are fun because I can make content on something that I might not be sure I want to make a full video on. Then if it does good I might ad it to my list of long form video ideas.
good to know, very well made. thank you.. i just dont get how i went from what i was watching to this lol.
TH-cam is an amazing thing. I have found myself going down many rabbit holes and wonder how?
Your die seems to be a simple piece of ply wood and well used enough to a wear mark where it meets the extruded. Have you tried putting a thin piece of rubber in the wear marks? The rubber should act as a seal and prevent the bleed out. You can probably take some liquid gasket maker like permatex and paint it on if you don’t want to cut a piece of rubber.
It's so much pressure that it tends to be more work than it's worth to try to prevent the blowout. I am planning on making a new die that fits inside the hopper to see if that helps.
This vid was random on my start page. I love it! I wish you all the best and keep up the work and passion for your hobby!
I am glad you found the video!
Thanks for the honest review. It's so hard to justify spending money on a wheel to see if I want to pursue pottery, so its good to know that this wheel would be a great way to introduce myself to the craft at home. You mention that five pounds of clay is kind of the max limit. If I wanted to get into bowl making would this one be a good fit?
Glad it was helpful!
One day I will attempt this. Thank you so much for sharing! :) Very informative!
Go for it!
Nicely done!
Thanks!
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Will you be doing more lives anytime soon?
I don't know. I want to work on the stream quality before my next one.
Thank you Zebulon Pottery for the awesome video! I LOVE how this came out as well! Is there a name for the technique being used? It's very cool!
Thank you! The most technical part of this make was the glazing. I don't have any labels but it was a lot of fun.
I have dabbled in pottery, but nothing too serious. I would say my favorite thing to make was a bowl shape. The cup shape takes so much more skill than I thought it would, you make it look much easier than it is.
Glad you liked it.
Looks amazing! That stamp is so cool!
I think so too!
Very relaxing! You make this look so easy, but I know it isn't! Thanks for the inspiration!
You are so welcome!
I really appreciate this video. I’ve been considering buying one of these wheels but most of the videos I find are people who just bought it and used it once. It’s nice to hear from someone who has had it for a long time. I just started throwing and only plan on making smaller things like mugs, little bowls, and other things that don’t take much clay. I am definitely going to buy one of these wheels now though, so thank you!
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. If you have an Instagram for your pottery, I would love to check it out!
Hey man! Great first live!
Thanks. I have a long way to go.
❤ Very relaxing and the final result was amazing! Thanks for sharing!❤
Thank you so much!
Thanks for the info!
I hope it helps
Really great video!! Love the whole process! I’d love to see a full kiln opening! Saw some beautiful pieces in there!!
I run a community studio and not all the items in the kiln are mine. I am thinking about asking members if they are ok with me using their items in a video. We have a lot of talented pottery at our studio and they surprise me all the time with creative ideas.
You’re incredibly skilled as always! I love the handle flair & the large handle being lifted upwards. The purple/pink color is gorgeous... I had a large handled purple coffee mug of yours that was my favorite mug yet I took it into the bathtub with me and accidentally knocked it over with the shower curtain. It was that awesome of a mug that I had to take it with me everywhere apparently. Lesson learned. I’ll have to visit your shop and get a new one soon! I love watching the process of the pottery being made and believe that it is encouraging to those who may want to learn themselves. It’d be nice to see more of your face for future reference.🖤☕️💜
Stop by the shop anytime you want. Mondays are my slowest days!
❤ Great video! ❤ Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
I really like that handle pull 😂😂 On a serious note, great video! ❤❤
