Jason Cortez Update: An Interview with Candelario Cortez
On March 20, 2024, we released Episode 19, which covered the tragic case of Jason Cortez. In that episode, I guided you through the timeline of events and shared the publicly available details from investigators.
In this episode, I’m joined by Jason’s father, Candelario Cortez, to delve deeper into Jason’s life, the challenges his family has endured since his heartbreaking murder, and any new developments in the case.
If you haven’t listened to Episode 19 yet, or need a refresher, I encourage you to revisit it before continuing.
Jason’s case began in September 2021, when he left his new wife in Virginia to travel to Los Angeles. He had planned to help a friend with photography for a creative project-a trip meant to be brief and enjoyable. However, on September 10, everything took a devastating turn.
While visiting Ernest E. Debs Regional Park for a photo session, Jason and his friend were leaving the park when a single gunshot rang out. Jason collapsed to the ground. Despite his friend’s efforts to perform CPR, Jason’s life was tragically cut short.
This senseless act of random violence remains unresolved, and the shooter has yet to be identified.

Has anyone ever thought about that the stranger who came to help could be the killer himself, and he gave a description of someone non-existing? Why would he come to help then? Because he was sure that Jason cant survive, and this way he could mislead everyone. 🤔

Don't go any where that there are human traffickers....
It is not a safe place to go at all, the island is run by violent warring drugs gangs and mafia, attacks and murders are prolific if you look at all the incidents that they wont tell you about because they are protecting the tourist trade.A lot of satanic activity goes on there, the locals call the area where Jay went missing The Gates Of Hell, and it was no accident, same as many before him who disappear up there.
Cartels, drugs, human trafficking and organ harvesting. This is why people are missing.
No, Europeans pronounce it correctly as Tenerifay (phonetically) especially those who live there. 🙈
Actually we do..........Been here 24 years.....Germans also pronounce it that way.........
th-cam.com/video/BHJfWKMVmxc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dIZjm-Y8pGvOghmZ. He’s a scam artist… he’s not dead..
I knew Dilek for about 30 years. She doted on her son whom she worked together with, she would NEVER leave her beloved Gokce. To me this is a homicide where he had an accomplice on board who took the jewelry after throwing her overboard. Then bumped him off so he/she didn't have to share the money from the proceeds???? After all she always wore huge rocks where just 1 piece was worth a fortune... It also could be that she over the course of their relationship lent him vast sums of money and finally wanted the loan paid back.... No matter how you look at it I'm convinced it was a hommicide and horrible end to a loving mother, grandmother, friend and a woman always ready to give to anyone in need....
Thank you for listening to the podcast! If you're interested in chatting about the case or doing another episode about this, I'd love to hear your thoughts & ideas. Feel free to email me at lasttrippodcast@gmail.com - thank you!
Well I just saw this video. It’s already been all over the news 6 years ago. Why talk about him still. It’s over. I guess you're looking for subscribers. He was a friend of mine. Just leave this tragedy alone as there's enough information about it! How shameful !!😢😢😢
Someone always knows something.
Also what do you mean the car was found undrivable? It was drivable for him to get there right? So what about the car made it undrivable when it was found? No keys? Or was it damaged? That's a big chunk of evidence to not say why it was deemed undrivable!!! Undrivable hints to the fact that the car had been damaged to the point of it not being able to run anymore. Lets all just remember that people in this area hate people that look like Austin. Considered a "Dirty Hippie." Austin was the most generous person you could have ever met in your life. Still, I would check Missoula Montana. Not sure why... just a hunch
I would check Missoula Montana
So the hunters with guns said that he was "acting strange," but did they get scared of him? Were they maybe so scared that they may have shot him and said that he ran away from them? Austin left his prized side kick dog with his girlfriend. He would never just disappear on purpose. He was a kind person. Why has nobody questioned these people ever again. Doesn't make sense, ps. He didn't jump out of the truck. The people let him off, and there is a picture of it. Biggest question of all. Hunters and driver of truck say he was confused and seemed lost, but nobody called the police or 911 for help???? Something is not adding up. If i found someone who seems lost, thirsty, and acting odd in a forrest like that, i would call an ambulance for help considering how many people get hurt out there. Hunters should take a lie detector test, and so should the people who picked him up! Something is not right. Austin has to be alive unless he was murdered. If he did run away from anyone it was because he was threatened. He had been planning this trip for years. He was not a dumb guy at all.
I find it a bit strange that she told Markus about the Egypt trip only hours before they were supposed to go. I know it was a surprise for his birthday but how did he get off work and have nothing planned the whole following week? Also they had only been dating for 3 or 4 months, how could she know he'd like a surprise like that? I did something like this once but I told my friend before to make no plans on that weekend because I had a birthday surprise for him (Morocco trip in that case). It makes sense that she was crying on the way to the airport, she must have been very disappointed but went anyway because the money was already spent. And that was only the beginning of her nightmare.
There's no evidence that she really did a surprise to her bf, she's no longer alive, and very likely only her bf knew about it, if it was indeed a surprise. Think that she borrowed money for her parents for that trip without telling them where she will go. Her father later stated the he had no idea her daughter will go in Egypt and he would surely not let her go there, with anybody, not to mention all alone. I believe what her parents stated are 100% true facts.
@republicofhandball8815 I thought it was her second time in Egypt?
th-cam.com/video/QhYsIpnXFD4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MMfdP-yczUt0Tf0y
It is very obvious 3 things: she was druged, raped ( all night on the bout in read see !!!?) Are kidding me no dout, she was prevented from boarding the fight! Why no videos from the airport when she was there. Any smart person can see from her look that she was traumatized and drugged, nothing to do with mental issues
Justicia para Carla!!
Fantastic podcast, thank you. I'm Ryan's Uncle. You did some great research and there's so much more to the story. I'll let you know once the official discovery plus documentary comes out, it's called The faking dead. Ryan's out there somewhere and i'll find him one day
Your documentary is fantastic, top professional
Interesting channel. Very nicely narrated. You should have more subs. Best of wishes from Spain❤
Thank you so much for listening!
You have an engaging voice/narration! I would recommend getting a pop filter for your microphone to cut down on the sibilance (harsh "s" sounds). You can make a DIY one out of a thin sock or pantyhose btw!
Thank you for the tip! I recently switched microphones and got some better equipment - hope it's working!
Liverpool played AC Milan in Istanbul not against Istanbul.
Thank you! Sorry, I don't always get the details exact, but I try!
Hello from Europe. Thank you for covering this case. I dont know who killed him, intentionally or not. I’ve been in asian countries without problems. Many possibilities here. I heard about the case first time in 2021.
Thank you so much for listening! I agree - so many possibilities in this case. I also love traveling in Asia and have many times without problems. You just never know what will happen, so stay as safe as possible!

Beside Alex's case and the 2 Dutch girls there have been around 50 other cases of people disappearing in Boquete and the Pianista trail. They were South Americans and not Europeans so this is why there wasn't as much noise around them. It just doesn't sit right with me that you still advertise the place as "beautiful and safe" and encourage people to go there after all that we know, especially lone female travellers. Very bad taste. Yes, it looks like a lush paradise but there is something very sinister happening underneath the surface there and corrupt authorities do everything in their power to cover it up or blame it on "accidents". The last thing we need is to send more naive people there which could turn into news stories..
I understand your feelings, but I also believe that Panama can be visited safely and is a wonderful place. Every country has crime and things to watch out for, so I'm hoping through my podcast I can give some safety tips relating specifically to each place I cover. For example, in the US visitors should be aware of mass shootings, civilians carrying guns, robbery, rape, and murder. While rape and murder occur in many other countries, something like mass shootings is predominately in the US. I don't feel that any country is "better" or "worse" than another country - there is crime in every corner of the world.
@TheLastTripPodcast there are bad people everywhere we all know that. But some places are safer than others still. Panama and Boquet have a concentrated history of bad cases, so to me it's wrong to encourage people to go there especially if they are more vulnerable.
I came to Egypt alone and I'm fine 🙌 more safe here than my hometown in UK, where there is murder in parks in the daytime etc nothing like that ever happened here. Mexico is worse, they will burn your ass for driving on the highway and get rid of your body 💯
Thank you for taking about my son Jason cortez 😢
Thank you so much for listening, I'd love to do a follow up episode about him to keep his name in the media as much as possible. Let me know if you'd like to chat or have any more info, I'd love to learn more about the kind of person he was so more people will look for answers. Feel free to email me lasttrippodcast@gmail.com - I would love to bring some justice for Jason. Someone out there knows something!
I knew Carla, my best friend was very good friends with her. This still hurts my heart. RIP Carla.
I love this channel. New subbie.
Thank you so much for listening!
Very interesting. Wish they could get justice for her.
I really hope justice prevails in this case - thank you so much for listening!
I am so frustrated. I want to reach out to so many involved in this trip Alison took… I am friends with one of her daughters and NONE OF THIS MAKES SENSE. SHE WAS TAKEN OR KILLED AND THEY DESERVE TO KNOW
I totally agree with you! Someone knows something and she deserves justice!
Thank you for making this about my daughter Jennifer! Miss her every day😢second
Thank you so much for listening, I'm so sorry for your loss! Let me know if you'd like me to do a follow up episode and we can talk more about who Jennifer was and any additional information you want to share. Feel fee to email me lasttrippodcast@gmail.com - thank you!
