    I also have a goldfish, recently picked up for free with all parts. Any idea if a real sunfish cockpit bailer valve would work? I think mine needs replacing

    • @oddlyadventures7083

      Not sure. Worst case just seal up the old drain hole and cut one to fit. I have a video where I show the drain hole up close if that helps at all Thanks, Tyler

    Are you sure the original finish was a gelcoat? I am currently working on a minifish from the 70's and was told not to paint over it as it will not stay. So further did you remove all the gel coat first or just roughed it up to hold a paint?

    Nice buy on the boat. I found an old Goldfish as well. Mine is a 1968 and came with a trailer as well. Picked both up for $500 about 2 years ago. My profile picture is my boat. Enjoy!

    If you don't like a lot of scraping, one of the citrus-based non-toxic paint strippers works awesome and smells good too. Brush on, let work overnight, bam, everything wipes off the next day. Sanding and glassing the old rudder and daggerboard is fine if you don't intend to race in "official" events. Racers need to keep everything pretty much stock.

    • @oddlyadventures7083
      @oddlyadventures7083 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paint stripper would have been a life saver! I haven't had much luck with them in the past, however, it may be good to give them a second chance. I have no intent to do any racing with this boat, but good to know for future builds! Thanks for the support and tips! Tyler

    Is the deck too slippery now after refinishing?

    • @oddlyadventures7083
      @oddlyadventures7083 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question, and one I don't have an answer too as I have not finished the boat and had it i the water. I can foresee that being an issue and adding some sand or grit to the paint could have definitely eliminated the slip risk. Thanks, Tyler

    i'm working on a sunfish currently and replacing all of the hardware - what kind of screws did you use for the main halyard cleat and the rudder bracket?

    • @oddlyadventures7083
      @oddlyadventures7083 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Graci- I took off the old ones and went to my local hardware store and bought ones that matched the closest to it. You should be alright as long as you make sure that the replacements are stainless. Let me know if you have any other questions! Thanks for your support! Tyler

    My used Sunfish weighed in at 170 pounds. With two inspection ports, a pot fan, wrapped in vented black plastic, placed on saw horses in the summer sun roughly how many days will it take to dry out the hull? Too bad there isn't some way of putting the boat in an oven at a bit over 212°F and just steam the water out through the ports. Maybe a lumber drying oven somewhere if you happen to have a friend who owns one. Nice instructional videos! Duncan

    • @oddlyadventures7083
      @oddlyadventures7083 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Duncan- Great question, and I'm not sure I have the answer. However, it sounds like you have the best setup possible to facilitate the drying process. Mine took about a month to dry out with a fan and heat lights running about 1/3 of the time. I would think that yours should dry in a week or 2 under the conditions you mentioned. Let me know how it works! Thank you for your support! -Tyler

    I'n not sure you should have filled the 4 screw holes in the bow area: a Sunfish grab-handle goes there. makes it easier to haul the boat. Also why fill the drain plug hole?

    • @oddlyadventures7083
      @oddlyadventures7083 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi skylarking12- I filled all the holes in the boat due to a leak issue which I was unsure of where it was coming from. I plan on later re-drilling and sealing all the holes when the grab-handle and drain plug are re-installed. Thank you for your support and the comment! Tyler

    • @skylarking12
      @skylarking12 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      leaks will come from the deck/hull edge seam or from the daggerboard trunk, typically.

  • @bassntruck

    You will regret putting the access port in the middle there on the rear. I have a few of them on my boat but the rear one is not that far forward. Your rudder will likely smack it all the time. A hole saw makes a much nicer cut. I really enjoy sailing my boats.

    • @oddlyadventures7083
      @oddlyadventures7083 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bassntruck- Never even gave the rudder a thought because I thought it would lay flat enough, good to know though. We will see how it works out and I will be sure to mention something in the test video about it. You are absolutely correct the hole saw would have made my cut much less "unique" but I didn't have one large enough, nor want to buy one that large for a one time use type of deal. Thanks so much for the feedback though. I really appreciate your support and insight, I am new at most of this stuff so any suggestions along the way are welcomed! -Tyler

    • @bassntruck
      @bassntruck 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tyler, My boats have scratch marks all across the rear where the rudder handles have rubbed through the gelcoat. I understand using the tools you have. But I would not go as far as to call it "unique". Just be honest and say it is all I had and I could not afford the correct saw. There is nothing wrong with that. Saying you did it to be unique just makes one look like a lazy dummy. I did not amass all my tools overnight. You can see some of them in my videos. I do not recall if you used a sealant between the boat and access port. You can use an RTV or a water safe silicone. Just keep on trying and learning. Do not be afraid to ask questions and so some research. The come ot your own conclusion. Goodluck

      @oddlyadventures7083 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Aubrey- You have a good eye and are correct it is not a sunfish! It is actually a "Goldfish" which was a knock off version off the popular sunfish. It is extremely similar in many ways. Check out where it all started and a brief overview of the boat here: th-cam.com/video/c2TW1DI4QKw/w-d-xo.html Thanks for the comment and your support. Tyler
