Truth About Trees TV

This channel contains videos about trees and forests of all types. Initially, uploads will be connected to the PBS series The Truth About Trees: A Natural and Human History. Many short videos about trees and forests have been produced during the making of this series and will be uploaded to this channel. The Truth About Trees has been the first series of its kind ever produced in the U.S. Funders of the series include the National Science Foundation -- the principal funder -- as well as the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, the MacArthur Foundation, the U.S. Forest Service, and Bartlett Tree Experts. The series has been directed by Ross Spears, under the auspices of the James Agee Film Project. David MInckler and Amy Gerber-Stroh have been editors and camerafolk!
Bigleaf Maple Portrait
Here is a portrait of a truly Western tree -- the Bigleaf Maple. It is often covered with up to 20 species of moss. It grows in the Quinault River rain forest in Washington, where it gets 120 inches of rain yearly. Apparently it's not doing well with Climate Change. A good tree to climb, if you are a canopy scientist.

The Weyerhaeuser Corporation is the largest lumber company in the U.S. Much of their timberland is located in the Pacific Northwest or in the American Southeast. They welcomed us to film for a day at one of their northwest tree lots and provided descriptions as we went along.

Bernd Heinrich is the author of many excellent books, including THE TREES IN MY FOREST, which describes the ecology and history of his own 300 acre forest in western Maine. This wonderful short film follows Bernd Heinrich as he shows many of his trees and explains his own theories of "forest management." This is # 48.

Cherry Blossoms & Michela Mansuino

The Japanese government gave the U.S. hundreds of Cherry trees in 1912 as an act of friendship. Most were planted near the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. In March thousands of visitors visit the trees as artists, such as Michela Mansuino paint them!

Two forest/tree scientists talk and demonstrate forest diversity in the Appalachian forest and the Pacific Norhwest forest. Travis Belote is originally from East Tennessee, but works for the Wilderness Society in Montana. Frosty Levy is from the Bronx in NYC but works at ETSU in Johnson City, Tennessee. Western Larch & Travis Belote

This is a portrait of the Western Larch tree, one of the only conifer trees in the world that loses and replaces its needles each year. Like most deciduous trees. the larch pulls its chlorophyll back into itself showing yellow pigmentation instead. Travis Belote of the Wilderness Society introduces the larch.

Climate change has been in the news all week as it should be from the UN's frightening report, to Hurricane Michael hitting Florida again at 145 MPH. So it's fitting to put this story up.

The former Supreme Court Justice, William O. Douglas, and cosmologist Thomas Berry both weighed in on the question of the Legal Standing of Nature. The city of Athens, GA informally recognized one its old trees in this film! I agree!!

From the Longleaf pines of the Deep South, we move to a hardwood forest in Missouri called the Pioneer Forest. It was founded by Leo Drye, a St. Louis environmentalist, to demonstrate that good lumber and a good forest could go together - without clear cutting. It's sometimes called UNEVEN AGED MANAGEMENT.
