Mid-Career Lab Monthly Call 11-24
Financial advisor @Justin Smith joined our call to field questions about financial resilience in turbulent times - especially given that we have an incoming administration with an ambitious tax-related policy agenda (to say the least!).
Here’s what we discussed:
- Career transitions require strategic financial planning around cash flow, health insurance, taxes, and retirement accounts;
- Social Security claiming decisions are complex and should be made holistically as part of a broader financial plan;
- Proactive tax planning across multiple years is critical, especially when transitioning between W2 and 1099 income;
- Regular use of retirement calculators and professional guidance can help optimize financial decisions over time.
MCL member Nancy Shaw shared a job win: she starts a new one-year contract in January that came to her through her network (hint hint to all job seekers!)
Filing for Social Security before full retirement age (FRA) can result in benefit reductions and “earnings test” complications. Bottom line: file early ONLY if you have exhausted all other financial resources.
Understand the implications of Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) in your 70s, and their tax impact. You may be surprised…
Financial Planning Best Practices include (JT editorial) getting out of denial about the future and building scenarios so you can decide on a strategy. So: cash, health insurance, investments, and savings?
There are great Financial Planning Tools and Resources available at the big institutions (Fidelity, Vanguard etc). Get to know them and use them!

In our October 2024 Mid-Career Lab Q&A Call, we gathered mid-career professionals to share stories and strategies for overcoming ageism in the workplace. The conversation was both eye-opening and empowering as we explored how age bias manifests in hiring, career progression, and workplace culture-and what we can do about it. One of the most startling revelations came from a UK survey, shared by...

Franchise guru Meg Schmitz gave us a great overview of the franchise business model and key criteria for both determining how to evaluate investing in a franchise as a viable business opportunity . Like any business, it will have its ups and downs. Owning a franchise strikes a middle point between working for an employer and starting a business from scratch as an entrepreneur. The franchisor pr...

MCL member Nathalie Messier, operations and project management expert, was our guest on the call. Nathalie recently took what some people might consider a step down or a step back when she accepted a contract position that she was clearly "overqualified" for. She took the gig because she had been out of work for a while and wanted to get back in the swing. But she also felt that it might be an ...

Lively call this month as we heard from a handful of people dealing with the challenging job and career marketplace for older workers. One theme that keeps coming up in these calls is the need for all of us to take a more entrepreneurial or consultative approach to getting a job. We can’t expect that applying with a resume and a cover letter is going to elicit a response. In fact, it is always ...

In this month’s call, we heard from Brenda about landing her new position and the unconventional way she did it. By being ultra-clear about what she was looking for in her intended role, and by presenting herself as a peer (not as a job seeker or supplicant), she found herself in an unexpected dialogue with the woman who turned out to be looking for someone who fit Brenda’s background and attit...

Hello John and all the Career@50 Gang! Unfortunately, I had been missing the Thursday calls because I was working a job for the holidays during the times of these calls. My holiday gig ended on Jan 20th, but somehow, I was not able to register for this Jan 24th call with the link. I listened to this recorded call and enjoyed hearing Brenda Newberry's amazing story about connecting with her potential employer, and the comments and stories of the others, like Angelica. While unemployed, I signed into a Continuing Ed Program to earn a Certification of Graphic Arts. Currently, I am grabbing short term contract work while seeking a Graphic Arts position or to start my own freelance position. I have held informational interviews, with a lot of positive feedback. Plus I changed my label on LinkedIn to be what I want to be, not what I no longer wanted. I have heard things like "Graphic Arts is a 30-ish job". I am 63 (turning 64 in April), and choose not to listen to that. My advice: DO NOT jump into that "old people" mold that people set for you!!!
Hello! Unfortunately I was not able to attend this event but wanted to share a short story. Thank you for sharing the recording. Here is something I wanted to share. I am a 54 women accomplished in sales, business and team management. After almost a year job hunting and consistently being told I was over qualified, I was not able to find a job at my level. Financially it was very difficult but I survived. Last November I was 'lucky' to get an entry level contract doing validation of insurance contract working from home. Surprisingly, I am accepting this situation and the frustration from the many rejections has finally stopped. Although I am not in a role I should be, I am using this time to recharge. I am grateful and relieved that I will be able to stay above water financially, which will allow me to rethink my career. I am really interested in writing and would love to turn around my career and go 180 degree away from what I have done in my 30 year career. I trust that this acceptance of doing this type of job will lead me somewhere I would probably have never allowed myself to explore.
Hey John thanks for the replay. Listening to it now. not a fan of resolutions either. Now calling them intentions. I'm pretty much set with short term SMART goals that will keep me laser focused for the next few years. I do have plans to get back into the workforce as well through word of mouth and networking to create an additional stream of income while I dabble in the book publishing world as my "side hustle." I am in the early stages of exploring a new encore career as a first-time published author. I wrote my project 2019-2021. 2022 was down time for family matters and medical challenges. In 2023 I connected with Amazon Self-Publishing, they liked the samples of my work, and we started editing my first draft for the first edition last year. After my job loss from Disney, I discovered I loved content creation and the field of personal and career development. I'm grateful for my job loss and now call it divine intervention. I would not have had the vision to create a 365-day devotional of best practices for job search/career pivots unless I had taken that journey myself. Also completed (last year) a first draft for a tiny bites companion for the first edition. Because job search and career decisions at any age are a never-ending multi-generational cycle of life, I've found my sweet spot, my dream job and my why. I love what I'm doing so much, I'm jumping ahead of the game because I believe in me and my product. In 2024 I've started working on a first draft for a second edition for my vision for a series of holistic self-help books for finding passion, purpose, dream jobs and our why. I know there are thousands of books out there in the same category, however, that's what side hustles are for! LOL! No pain no gain! These projects should keep me productively "busy" for a while. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
