London Fabric Shopping in 1 Day | Goldhawk Road & Rainbow Fabrics
มุมมอง 1.1K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hi sewing friends, My husband got me a trip to London for just 24 hours to go fabric shopping and it did not disappoint! There are SO many shops in London, so it was very hard to narrow focus. I made it to Rainbow Fabrics, all the shops at Goldhawk Road in Shepherd's Bush, and into Berwick Street in Soho. Borovick was closed, I didn't make it to Liberty, but Misan was fab. Here are the spoils o...
#fridaysews | My Crazed Week of Sewing + TWO New (Upcycled) Makes
มุมมอง 374ปีที่แล้ว
Hi sewing friends, I had a crazy week trying to get my entries for the #sewupcycle23 challenge finished by 10/31 and the mad dash of Halloween with kiddos. I entered two new makes: 1. @truebias #blairskirt I made from thrifted green canvas 2. @lowlandkids #elliedress I created from 4 or 5 thrifted knit women's tees Thanks to @Sew4serenity for letting me know about it! Sewupcycle Challenge hosts...
#FridaySews - Oct 27 - Blair Skirt Update + Sustainable Sewing with Thrifted Knits
มุมมอง 290ปีที่แล้ว
Hi everyone! Wow, I'm so humbled by how many sewing friends out there have watched my first #fridaysews. Your comments have been so kind and inspiring, thank youuuu ☺️☺️. This week I've been working on my #truebiasblair, sewing up my raglan sweatshirt from It's Always Autumn, thinking up a new idea for a little girl's dress pattern I just snagged (hint, thrifted pink knits to make a color block...

Sewing My First Toile! Plus Custom Fit Adjustments 👀
มุมมอง 174ปีที่แล้ว
Excited to share my first toile! As a beginner sewist, the thought of making a toile is a little overwhelming, but after making a few pieces that I had to practically ruin to get the fit right I decided it might be worth a try. I'm making the Gable Dress from @jenniferlaurenhandmade1959. I want to drop the waist of the bodice to fit me properly as waistlines are always a little too high on me. ...
Sewing the By Hand London Ruffle Skirt
มุมมอง 127ปีที่แล้ว
Thanks for joining me for this short sew along of the #Byhandlondon self drafted ruffle skirt. As a beginner sewist I found this pattern challenging but really loved the end result. I hope to make my future sew alongs more detailed and capture more footage of the actual drafting. I didn't realize I wanted to make this video until I'd already cut out the skirt 🤷. I'd love to hear from anyone els...

You sandwich the bodice between the two midriff panels, fold them down away from the bodice and they are wrong sides together.
It took While for me to figure that out. I am mid way through this pattern. I hate it. I have 30 years of experience and I have never had this degree of trouble. The instructions are garbage. I want to just toss this dress. I think I could grab another piece of fabric. Do slight modification to the bidice front. Only cut 1 each of midriff pieces . Probably complete in 3 hrs.
Wow that’s beautiful!
Thank you so much!! 😊
You know that moment when someone mentions the exact pattern that's under your cutter right that very moment😆😆 That happened when I was cutting the pattern pieces out, and now I'm cutting the fabric! I remember when one granddaughter was in tulle skirts every day. We called her Fancy Nancy haha. Your upcoming trip sounds wonderful!!
I love when that happens @lynngates1662!
Fun catch up! I have an almost 2 year old girl so it’s fun to see what your plans are for your little ones.
I love making clothes for them esp my 4yo. Somehow tiny things are so much more fun than adult sizes. 😂

Hi Carrie (sp?)! Love your enthusiasm for sewing and fabric...and your beautiful makes. Have you checked out Lifting Pins and Needles on TH-cam, yet? She is the Queen of Hand Basting,(among other things) which probably sounds like too much work. But! Until you have a walking foot for your machine, hand basting plackets and other areas that need topstitching will prevent the rippling you're experiencing. I don't think it's your tension that is causing the issue, but the fabric against the feed dogs being fed faster than the fabric under the foot. Also, on your full skirt, large circular hems need tiny hems so they won't ripple, The length of the skirt at the bottom of the hem is larger than the skirt is where the hem is being attached. The smaller the hem, the less difference in the length of the hem that needs to be eased in to a shorter length. If you want a large hem on a full skirt, a facing or bias binding can be used. Hope that helps! And sorry for the long, run on sentences.
This is SO helpful thank you so much for sharing! I had no idea about the hem on the circle skirt. And I hadn’t thought of hand basting first. Definitely investing in a walking foot too.
I love it that you went to Goldhawk Road. I live in Surrey now but Nottinghill is where I was born & lived all my childhood.. I still go to Goldhawk Rd for any fabric I need. I make Velvet Pumpkins & crafts, I'm have the best banter with the shopkeepers ( I talk to everyone like I’ve known them for years 😂 also talk for England, which helps!😬) Thanks for sharing ❤
That’s such a great way to do it! I figured my American accent wouldnt help me so I tended to keep quiet. 😂
Great video. I am heading to London in the spring and was planning to fabric-shop. You gave me some great information. Thank you and happy sewing.
So glad it was helpful! Happy fabric shopping. Best advice, go with a plan of attack. There’s so much to see!
The skirt turned out so cute! The color is gorgeous. I love the upcycles. Thrift stores are a treasure trove 🤗
Adding a link to the fabric! lamazifabrics.com/products/sparkle-flowers-on-maroon-viscose-fabric
Cute skirt! You might try a walking foot for the puckering placket issue. Regardless, it looks great on you!
Oh great idea I hadn't thought of a walking foot. Thank you so much!!

I was analyzing your TH-cam channel and are you struggling with subscriber and video views monetization ? I can help grow your TH-cam channel, I want to discuss your channel grow and traffic generated
Carey, you are such a natural at vlogging. It's hard to believe you are new to it. Love your projects and look forward to seeing them soon. Happy sewing
Welcome to the group! Great job. Cant wait to see what you make with all that gorgeous fabric!! Happy weekend!
Just found your channel. Your green fabric is beautiful. However, it may be too stiff for a flowy dress or skirt. The cargo-type of skirts you showed pictures of would probably be great for that fabric, but you might be disappointed with a dress made from it. I say this because you describe it as canvas-like. I'd hate for you to be disappointed with a dress that didn't have much movement and flow to it. A very experienced YT sewing vlogger took a gamble and made a garment (can't recall what) using fabric that wasn't recommended on the pattern envelope. It turned out to be an "epic fail" because it was seriously the wrong type for the garment. Would hate for you to have regrets and get very discouraged with an expensive amount of fabric. Your thrifted trench coat purchase was a great buy for $6! I understand being a fulltime working mother and trying to find time to sew. You fit in what you can! Looking forward to your makes with your fabric haul. BEAUTIFUL pieces!!!
Love the fabric haul and the top you are wearing - did you make it?
Hello, could you please add the link to the website that you had your PDF pattern sent to? Thank you.
Beautiful skirt. You got there in the end and that's how it works out sometimes. No matter how long we've been sewing, these little blunders happen but they are usually fixable. Glad I found your channel. Look forward to following you along your sewing journey.
That blossom viscose is DIVINE!❤
Hello, new subscriber here from the UK. Loved your vlog and haul. I can't wait to catch up on your playlist and future vlogs 😊
Tysm for subscribing @jacmary6580 nice to meet you!
Hi. Nice to meet you. I think you said Jeri. Welcome to your first video. I saw your video you did on friday sews. You will have a great time here because we're here to support one another.😅 That is a beautiful dress on your dress form.
Oh thank you so much, it's nice to meet you @zeldasews!
Hi. I'm Zelda. I didn't hear you say your name so I'm not sure what your name is. I love meeting other people who sew and I like to support them... so I have subscribed. 😅 Don't forget to go in your "About" page and put information about yourself so we can get to know you. My channel is called Zelda, Sews and that's what I love to do! Welcome to your first Friday Sews! I have a local copy shop that does printing. I was curious about PDF plotting and how much it costs per sheet.
Thanks Zelda, I'm Carey. Good tip on about page, will def add. PDF plotting was btw $4 or $8 per pattern roughly plus shipping
By the way, if you haven’t had you colors done and know your color season, run, don’t walk and have it done. I love summer colors and had a large wardrobe of muted, lined wool slacks, blazers, skirts, dresses, and jumpers. Oh, the time! Oh, the cost! I’m a winter. Once I started getting tons of compliments and realized how much better I looked, I gave everything away. Get your colors done first.
Great tip! Tysm Kathy!
Where are you finding thrifted fabric? The local Salvation Army in my area quit carrying fabric, such a bummer! Great shares!
Hi Lisa! Oh that's def a bummer. We have a really good Salvation Army in my area. Goodwill in certain areas is ok, but can def be hit or miss. Recently tried Savers as well and it's just $$$ for what it is. Def open to any recos for new thrift spots!
Beautiful fabrics 😊 happy sewing!😊
Thank you! 😊
This was so fun to watch! It reminded me of the excitement I felt discovering everything when I first started sewing. :) I was super tempted to get the Blair skirt but already have way too many plans on my Fall sewing list haha. So I'm really looking forward to seeing how yours turns out! That trench coat fabric that you scored would look lovely in a Blair as well. I have a Tilly and the Buttons Ness skirt made out of a bull denim that is in that beige color, and it goes with everything. The sewing culture over in the UK/Europe is really so different than it is here in the US. I'm lucky that the sewing studio we have in town does monthly sewcials, and I've gone to the frocktails for our state (Arizona) as well. Not familiar with what kinds of sewcials are available in the New England area, but I'm sure there must be something similar!
Oh wow, tysm @einahpets! I'm working on the blair and fingers crossed a sewalong now. Hoping to drop it next week! Yeah, I know right. I'm jealous of the sewing community in the UK/Europe, but maybe I just haven't found the local sewing scene yet? That's what I'm hoping anyway. The frocktails and sewcials in AZ sound like so much fun. I'm hoping someone comments that we have something similar in New England. Also, have to look up TATB ness, haven't seen that one yet! Thanks for the reco!
I love the skirt pattern for the green fabric . I also had a hoodie pattern from Vicky Sews and was just about t 4:32 o cut the fabric and took a quick look at the pattern and thought oh no this is too complicated and I didn’t need the stress ! So. I made the Toaster sweater into a dress and I love it .just waiting for the cold weather to wear it
Ooo the toaster sweater is FAB, I bet it made a loooovely dress. Here's hoping it gets cold soon so you can wear it!
The beauty of sewing is that you can wear this way for awhile, and then shorten the bodice later if you want. I like the way you styled it with the jacket.
Good point Tammy, you're so right. Sometimes I have to remind myself, oh yeah, I made this, I can change it if I want to, no biggie. :)
It turned out so beautiful!!! I haven't made this pattern, but whenever you're hemming a curve, you'll tend to get that rippling effect. It's not your fault, it's the nature of the bias. You can minimize it by making the hem as narrow as possible. Or you can make a line of basting so you can draw up the fabric around the most bias sections. On the under side there will be ripples or gathers, but they won't show from the right side. And another choice is to use a bias tape for your hem. If it's lightweight fabric, you'll want to use hand-made bias from the same fabric so you keep the flowiness of the fabric. You're doing great, and I'm loving your channel! I think as sewists, we are always learning and problem solving. I love the online sewing community for all the wonderful help, inspiration, examples, etc. Happy sewing!
What a lovely note, Tammy, thank you so much for the tips and recommendations! I really appreciate it! That dang rippled hem, it's so frustrating but love the options you gave and will def try out the bias tape. And yes, I totally agree, I think the problem solving aspect is why I love sewing so much too. Good to know there are other sewists who can relate and share all your tips and experience. :)
So glad that I found you I'm so excited to watch you on your sewing journey. Love the fabrics that you bought the colors are awesome
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for your comment!😊
The dress is pretty on you, don’t change it, it looks fine👍. Sewing is a trial and error, and so far you are doing very well. Just keep a mental note for the next one, perhaps adding 1” or less could be enough. 🌸🌸🌸 Karen
Thank you so much Karen!
Wow, your skirt is really pretty. Don’t worry, we all make mistakes 😆😆😆, and we usually learn from them. Happy sewing 🧵🪡👗👚✂️🌸🌸 Karen
I made the S9136 for my daughter, and it was my first (during COVID times), it was not a difficult make and I am sure that you will ace it 👍👍👍👍. Great first video, you are a natural on camera.🌸🌸🌸 Karen from Florida.
Thank you so much for the kind words Karen 😊
Great Friday Sews video 👍👍👍. I love all the fabrics that you received fro Lamazi Fabrics, can’t wait to see what you make with them😊😊😊😊. Have a great week 👗🧵🪡👚✂️
Wow you had some amazing thrift finds!! I’m excited to see your makes 🤗
Thank you so much, excited to share!! 😊
😊 yay, I've done that too, so you are just fine, mistakes makes it perfect .Love it❤
Such a good reminder that our mistakes are what make us unique. Thanks Sofia!
Very pretty
Looks lovely on you
Thank you!!😊
Can’t wait to see all your makes! Fun haul!
Yay! Thank you so much @jammymommy!!
Fun video, I loved your thrift finds and your new fabric haul! Looking forward to seeing more of your videos 😊
Thank you so much @lorijustice4073!
Keep it and wear it.
Thanks so much @daisyrose8412!
Pretty dress but in my opinion you didn’t need to lengthen the bodice. Still looks good on you though & a very wearable toile. I’ve always added 1 inch to every bodice as I have a longer torso but recently I’ve had to shorten this on a couple of makes. Maybe pattern companies are drafting for taller bodies these days - or maybe I’m just shrinking with age 😂
@makeitsew277 thank you so much for your note! I think you're so right I didn't need to lengthen the bodice at all. So funny how patterns are different than ready to wear. I am starting to think you have to make a pattern and few times to really get the fit perfect.
@Sew4serenity thank you sooo much! Have to admit I'm definitely a little star struck to see your comment on my first vlog ☺️☺️. I love your channel and take such inspiration from you!! Btw such a bummer about the original Dressmakers ball project, totally feel what happened tho. I feel like until I get my custom adjustments right I'm in the same boat with a lot of my makes. Can't wait to see how the final project turned out tho. Seeing your other makes I have all confidence it will be fab.
Thanks for the mention in your comments . Such a lovely vlog and welcome to youtube. Have you got an instagram account? x
@sew4serenity I just created one and started posting! instagram.com/sew_whats_next_today?igshid=OGQ5ZDc2ODk2ZA==
Don’t forget you have to make the back bodice longer if you make front bodice longer
@lindamurphy5020 too right. Sounds like something I would forget 😂, thanks for the reminder!
Hey! I very much liked watching your video. It might just be good to look into the sound levels, if I could give you some advice. The sound level of the intro music and your voice are very different. But besides that, I really look forward to more videos from you!
Thanks so much, I will def look into the sound levels! Appreciate you watching and taking time to comment.
Fun video! I love your fabric pick for your dress, definitely will be one of a kind. I’ve been sewing for a year and love it. I’m from New England, too. 😊
Thanks @Mhe25! It's such a fun hobby I love it!
