I’m Eric, a freelance writer living in Louisville, Kentucky. I teach people about writing.
I usually post a video every day on my channel about my life and writing. I started taking my TH-cam channel seriously in December of 2024 after I had trouble finding another job that was willing to work around my job as an adjunct professor. I teach English Composition at a university and have an MFA in Creative Writing. I started making TH-cam videos every day to get better at storytelling in video form. I also write fiction.
I am a member of the Amazon Affiliate program and I may earn commission on purchases from Amazon.
I also blog on my website for those who want to go more in-depth about writing.

I Can't Drive
Today's story is about not being able to drive. I've had peripheral vision issues since I was a teenager and have never been able to legally drive a car or get a driver's license. I've worked my entire adult life. Not being able to drive really complicates job searches and being considered for management positions for many jobs.

Being A Writer in 2025 Is Going To Be Hard
มุมมอง 252 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Today's story is about jobs. Being a writer usually means working another job or jobs for a while-sometimes for a long time. I've had lots of jobs in the past, and none of them have been a writer. I share my employment history with you in this video. I worked on my audio leveling skills for this video. Let me know if it sounds better. Your Writing Time is Important-Especially AFTER an MFA Program
มุมมอง 544 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
After completing something like an MFA in Creative Writing program, people tend to get impatient, and they want you to sacrifice your writing time. You have to remind them that you need your time. Sorry about the audio spikes. I'm still learning. I'm a member of the Amazon Associates Program and may earn commission on purchases. Making Youtube Videos IS Writing! (An Adjunct Professor Says So)
มุมมอง 257 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Making TH-cam videos is writing; I'm an adjunct professor and am always telling my students that writing isn't just sitting at a computer or notebook putting words on a page in 2025. I made this video to show that, and I'm going to try making more videos like this on my channel. Let me know if you would watch this and you think this will work. I'm a member of the Amazon Affiliate Program and I ...

Why Good Writing is Recursive-What that Means for Your Writing Process
มุมมอง 48316 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
If you're confused or frustrated about writing as a recursive process, this is what it means. Sometimes it's confusing for students or people learning to write, especially after the go through the practice of the writing process themselves. Also, sorry, I filmed this twice, and the second time I forgot to plug in my mic. The book mentioned in the video: Note that this is an affiliate link and i...

Week 1 of Figuring Out my "Writing Business"-Whatever that Means
มุมมอง 11914 วันที่ผ่านมา
Could you stand to see this sort of thing every week? I know I want to be my own boss; I'm a writer and I need that flexibility, eventually. My first week of figuring out whatever my "writing business" is involved a lot of rethinking and reworking my social media accounts, including this TH-cam channel. I'll post these retrospective, reflective videos once a week and go over what I did with my ...
I'm Starting A "Writing Business" - I Don't Really Know What That Means

Let me know in the comments if you think this will work! This is my new first video. I'm starting a new business helping new business owners and entrepreneurs get better at writing. I'm 37 and can't drive either. I want to learn but cost and being terrified of it have held me back for a long time now. I don't know what it's like in the US but in the UK it'd certainly make a LOT of things easier, including finding (better) jobs.. Some places/people are ok to make arrangements, though, especially when it comes to the legality of it. Like you said, you've managed for a long time and can cpntinue to do sp cause you -know- how. When life theows limitations, we learn to either live with them or work around them. As for your videos, I loved the 1080p quality and angle. As I only have my phone/tablet to watch on, though, 4k doesn't do anything for me (and I think 4k is wasted on yt vids anyway). That said, the 4k contrast in the video felt a bit on the high side (but that is also an issue I had when switching to a 4k telly, it was so difficult to get the brightness/contrast/saturation right on it) Also loved the 'daily life'-snippets in between, they do add a bit of homeliness to it. Keep it up!
Thanks! 😀 yeah, in the U.S., unless you live in one of a few major metro areas, driving is often necessary at least some of the time. Louisville has buses but they don’t run frequently to most areas, but no trains, and it’s not the easiest to bike, and the sidewalks beyond the downtown area are inconsistent. But, somehow I manage, lol.
Have a series I've been working on for around 5 years, and I've been worldbuilding it mostly. Only recently did I actually start writing the chapters. It's been insanely hard as im sorta going a Tolkien route, lol. And by that, I mean I have a language im working on that's coming together quite nicely. However, it needs help. I am not the best when it comes to writing, but hey. I have got to chapter five, but i feel like I've been rushing it. I dont know. All I know is that I appreciate your videos as I've watched a few, and you've definitely helped me some with my series and my worldbuilding, so thank you!
Thank you! 😀 We all have our own things and skills within writing to get better at; keep going! Also, sometimes rushing the first draft can help you at least have something to work with later!
@ericshayhoward yeah chapters 1-4 are done, and so is around 80% of the worldbuilding. I'm completely starting from scratch, with no humans, elves, dwarves, or orcs. I've made my own races with their own everything.
Norton is all well and good, but when I was a kid my parents had a set of the complete Harvard Classics, which I believe they inherited from my grandfather from way back. The series contains not just modern literature, but also modern essays, ancient texts, Greek theater, medieval and early modern narratives, folklore, biographies, philosophy, science writing (e.g. Darwin's "Origin of Species") etc. My favorite volume was the complete Arabian Nights. Of course, the selection was made generations ago and I wonder if there's anything comparable out there today. But reading all or even most of the series definitely would have made a person "well-read" by any contemporary standard. My grandfather was a very smart guy and became a great businessman, but he had been far too poor to attend college and I'm sure he appreciated his Harvard Classics. For anyone interested in trying out this wonderful series, you can buy all fifty-one volumes on eBay at a reasonable price, but it's also available for free online.
Your vids keep gaining quality! This one was a bit low volume, but that said, the volumes of youtube vids is like a skyline of skyscrapers; up, down, up, down. As for the mic, I do think the arm takes a lot of visual space. It doesn't so much bother me, I just think you might want to utilise that kind of space, for example to show things? Good going on the job hunt! Find your balance <3
Thank you! I'm trying again with tomorrow's video; using good microphones gives a lot more control, but then that's also the catch; I have to learn to control it, lol.
If you think you're not well-read and you're seriously thinking about blazing through literary anthologies, you're on the right side of Dunning-Kruger. Average Americans wouldn't even imagine being able to do this.
😁 Not sure if I blaze through the anthologies necessarily, but I definitely read them more than most, probably weekly, especially when I need inspiration for my own writing.
I like that first slurp.

Why would you assume that to be "well read" means to know American or British literature in a Norton Anthology sort of way? However much American or British Literature you know, you would never be well-read if you've completely avoided Ancient Greek and Rome literature, philosophy, and science. Being "well read" is a very high standard. Reading poetry and novels is hardly getting you there.
I agree; I left out my favorite essay collections in this video: Seneca, Montaigne, etc., and the classics -Plato, Aristotle, etc., mostly because I wouldn't be teaching those anyway as philosophy and science are not my fields, which just goes to show you how subjective it all really is anyway.
@@ericshayhoward Good to hear, but philosophy and science -- the basic ideas that make up Western civilization - is part of being well--read and while the boundaries are somewhat loose, it's NOT subjective. That's why certain people are plagued with the notion that they're not well=read. They're not. I think the difference between being well-read and well-educated is very small.
I like how you keep your videos actually real. My feed gets pumped full with "do x, do y, do z, to <insert creative activity> fast/good/whatever" like one size fits all. As a parent to an autistic kid with, at most, half an hour to myself a day on pre-school-days and maybe an hour or so (if I'm not knackered) on non-school days, those video makers have no idea how valueable 10 minutes can be. This is where I like how you set the example of 'not everyone has 6 hours a day to themselves'. Good on you as well for going for that phd! I hope you get accepted! Keep the content coming as you see fit, it's a good watch! (Even in 1-3 minute chunks lol)
Thank you for the encouragement! 😀
Yessirr!
Yay! Thank you!
the problem is that once you read a single text, you can see all the texts that influenced it, then the worldview and philosophical tradition, then the related current research, then you read a poem one day and it references some obscure middle age story, then you seek that out, then… its a never ending web! it’s impossible to feel truly “well-read.” it’s like diving into some intellectual hole and coming out mostly knowing that you don’t know anything.
Yes! The life of an English major!
Great point -- thank you
I discovered this channel yesterday. TH-cam suggested you when I searched “writing course.”
Love the way you explain. Its refreshing that you angled it with the current landscape. Sub!
Thank you! 😁
such an underrated opinion.
Would like the glourious am essay but unfortunately it cannot be shipped to Denmark /EU by AMAZON ...
Aw shoot! Darn, regional rights can really make things hard. There’s also The Art of the Personal Essay, same editor. I like that one, too. But, not sure if that one would have the same issue or not. Hopefully you can find a copy of one of them somewhere, though!
Thanks I love this channel.....look forward to more
Thank you! 😀
i see writing as recursive in the sense that you take your writing and feed it back into the process to work on it again. or as Zinsser might say, "all writing is rewriting." riffing out a video is hard to do well, but in this case i think mixing a communication pivot into the idea of writing being recursive might have confused things a bit. i started out agreeing with the idea before i watched the video but that part lost me. i think i get where you're coming from, but i think that the communication pivot and how it relates either could have been explained more clearly or not included. i'm half bothering to comment because it helps with interactivity and might help push the video and your channel. i think you've got value to bring and i hope you succeed.
Thanks for pushing through and watching anyway! Of course, there’s a lot more on this from an academic perspective that could span multiple videos, and picking between discussing it in relevance to creative writing vs English composition is hard. I suppose I catered to the Composition side of things this time.
I very much enjoyed this. I was excited to see you had already uploaded this today. Thanks for the quick response! This helps so much. I definitely agree that this is 100% for me. I don't really care about the status of having read a certain amount of a particular kind of book. I care more about helping my writing process by giving it fresh ideas from a variety of different perspectives and perceptions. Seems like you picked up on that. I really appreciate that you added individual books at the end. I will take note of the anthologies. I'm so excited to start all of this. I was a mechanic for years and I'm finally doing something I love. This will help so much to strengthen my writing I am sure! Great video, again. All the best to you!
I'm glad it was helpful! 😁
I totally agree, if you look at artists and watch them draw, its the same way, they get something rough down and then they go over it over and over again until its perfect. Writing is no different, I suppose thats why its a craft, even woodworking you do the same thing. I guess its just folley to think that you could do anything perfect the first time you do it.
Yup! And even when it's perfect, some keep going!
@ericshayhoward yeah, look at how many times Ol George Lucas re-released his original trilogy and each release has some kind of alteration
Consistency is key. I had a similar experience when I started, getting maybe 20-30 views a video for my first few months. Eventually, TH-cam will start pushing you out to more viewers if you stick to a schedule. I'm at just over 11k subs after 2 years so its definitely possible. Keep at it!
Thanks for the encouragement! If only I knew my schedule, lol. (I'll settle on that soon I think.)
your video quality is good. but you are getting not more views and subscriver ? your channel has 225 subscriber and 7 video If you SEO your channel's videos, you will get enough views and subscriber, your videos will rank in TH-cam's search results.
Thank you! Working on it slowly.
Great video! A free writing video would be interesting.
Thanks! I'll keep it on my list! 😊
I am delighted to be here so early on! I recently started my own youtube channel and am excited to see where it goes. To be honest, I thought you were a long standing established channel with probably hundreds of video. I was surprised to find only a few. Your content quality is there and you will go far with this. I did also want to make an appeal tor a video idea. I have been looking for certain books to look into that can help me become well read (more than I am). I'm not looking for self help books, I'm moreso looking for books with good story telling. I am ADHD and am looking to train myself out of the word vomit writing. I have been journaling for a few years now and this has helped but sometimes I just can escape the long winded rigamarole haha. If you have any good books for this or know some good techniques outside of free writing, I would greatly appreciate it! All the best to you, good luck on your journey.
Also, for your analytics, I would like to mention that I found your video about becoming better at writing through related video recommendations.
Thank you! 😊 I will keep going. And I'll definitely think about your question; I've probably got some ideas!
Congrats on the 200! Keep on going! And keep on following your dreams. If it works for you, that's the most important thing. Everyone values things differently. All we need to do is pick what we like and experiment with it to see if it works for us personally. You do you and people will love your videos for you. :)
Thank you! I will! 😁
No I don’t. The crushing realisation falls on me as I watch this, all is futile, the dreams of becoming a successful writer fade, the only thing remaining is that soulless job feeding the corporate machine that runs on people’s dreams, that consumes them like any other fuel, leaving nothing but ashes and ghosts of possibilities that never were. And then the single remorse of my life comes as a wish that wails as it can never be fulfilled: “I wish I had learned to write”
I’m pretty sure this comment proves otherwise!
Have you read these texts, etc mentioned. Most of them contain multiple grammatical mistakes and misspellings. So in my humble yet always correct opinion few people know how to write.
Yes, and I do see a lot of writing that doesn't follow standard grammar, but to be honest grammar is and likely shouldn't be the focus of judging writing skills; there are lots of language differences in even academic writing these days that really helps certain voices shine. Clarity is likely a better focus, in my opinion. But, this is something that continues to be debated in even classrooms that I teach in, and I'm just one guy with an opinion.
@ericshayhoward Poor writing skills are a result of poor reading skills, which lead to poor job opportunities.
The point still stands, even if you write not good, you do write, you create and put a message in words that get across. The skill is there. Can the skill be improved? Well duh! All the skills can always improve, creative ones even more so, but it’s not an entirely new skill for which you have no basis. It’s not like you’re trying to do gymnastics and can’t do a somersault, you can do anything the great writers ever could, you just need to refine them.
I like the point that words are the map to the reader’s understanding. It reminds me of how we - as viewers - interpret art or movies or even songs. And, yes, you must read to be a better writer. For me, this means reading a physical book. And also yes on reading stamina.
Yes! It's pretty much the same process as far as I'm concerned; it's especially noticeable if you watch a lot of TH-cam video essays about various topics, .etc, and definitely songs, movies, and shows!
I like how you covered writing, not only as writing stories, but also texts, e-mails, etc. In the past few months I've decided to write some fantasy and just changing the thought of "I've not written anything today" to "at least I've written this longer than usual text" is already more helpful.
That's awesome! And a great way to think about the work you do!
Have a look at the book 'The 12 Week Year' for inspiration on keeping up your channel Begin with publishing 1-3 page short stories about your adventure with your channel
Interesting book rec; I’ll check it out!
The video is great, you need to keep promoting your channel. Is not hard.
Thank you! I will keep going.
the algorithm presented this and think it's a cool idea for a series! keep it going man
Thank you! I will!
Great video
Thank you!
