Quarantunes: 15. They Just Keep Moving the Line (Smash - Marc Shaiman/Scott Wittman)
July 28, 2020
Persistence and frustration.
For Geoids MT Living Room Cabaret: Screen to Screen. Megan Hillty is a goddess and I had to sing it one key down :p
This series of videos was created in the spring and summer of 2020, when I was completely alone and isolated in my flat in London. As for so many of us, this was an incredibly difficult time mentally and emotionally, and with no conceivable work on the horizon I made these videos for the enjoyment of myself and some close friends/family.
That's all for now, folks!

Brava! One of the hardest piano accompaniments in all musical theatre. And this is a sensational performance. A lot of happy sopranos out there with this to practice with! Hope you've had the opportunity to play it live with a singer since then.

Impressive! This isn't an easy song to sing, and it isn't an easy song to play, and I don't think there's another video on youtube where the same person does both at the same time!

I’m not very knowledgeable with piano playing techniques, but I’m absolutely astonished with your cover. I can barely concentrate on singing along with how confident and emotional your playing is. I’ve seen Adam Guettel lurk around YT covers and I hope he can see this and your beautiful interpretation of his work. ❤️

You can look in the forest For a secret field For a golden arrow For a prince to appear For a fable of love that will last forever You can look in the ruins For a wishing well For a magic apple For a charioteer For a fable of love that will carry you To a moon on a hill To a hidden stream A lagoon and a red horizon dream Silhouette set away from time forever To a valley beyond the setting sun Where waters shine and horses run Where there's a man who looks for you But while you look you are changing, turning You're a well of wishes You're a fallen apple No! No! Love's a fake Love's a fable Just a painting On a ceiling Just a children's fairy tale Still you have to look And look (x8) For the eyes On a bridge in a pouring rain Not the eyes but the part you can't explain For the arms you could fall into forever For the joy that you thought you'd never know For here at last away you go To a man who looks for you If you find in the world In the wide, wide world That someone sees That someone knows you Love Love Love if you can, Oh, my Clara Love if you can And be loved May it last forever Clara The light in the piazza

Currently learning this show, doing my research, came across this, and I have to say - your interpretation is stunning. I’ve known and loved this score for 12+ years and I know every note (in my heart, not yet in my fingers 😅 lol), and your precision and velocity throughout was just breathtaking. Thanks for this ❤️

Your vocal on this is kick-butt, Erika. The hairs stood up on my arms. Sondheim, Guettel . . . all the stuff I was told never to subject an audition pianist to . . . you play as if it were “Happy Birthday.”

  • @chillertheater

This is one of my all-time favorites and your performance is exquisite. The future of musical theater is in good hands . . . In this case literally!

Wow. Superb job, Erika! I went to grade school with Jeanine Tesori, whose surname was a few letters longer at the time. I think she was already mastering clarinet in1st grade. Some 40 years later, she was sitting behind a table at my “Titanic” audition and asked, “Did you go by another name … ?“. Still recognized me. Amazing.

Erika, this is truly astonishing. Adam Guettel is ridiculously difficult to play. I performed in two productions of this, the original and at the Pioneer Theatre in Utah. I’ve heard a lot of people play this and you are right up there amongst the best. I hope you will consider being a musical director someday, unless of course you plan a career as a brilliant concert pianist. Liked and subscribed, and I look forward to seeing and listening to more of your work. It brought tears to my eyes. Brava!

Love that piece. The execution was impresive, great speed and for most of it with very clear leading voice. To be honest I would use sustain less. Personally I like it slower

Really good! This actually feels like a more "classical" approach to Kapustin, wasn't too sure about the rubatos when I heard them but overall it actually works! Very controlled and beautifully played rendition.

aaaaaah, it's mono, help! *cough* err, bravo! i really like your interpretation, the not too fast tempo and especially the slight use of pedal instead of almost-full-staccato that seems standard, might have something to do with the hall as well though. Sometimes a phrase doesn't fully come out, i.e. 1:08, but i feel like after that you fully get into the piece and play quite virtuosically. Good job!
