Un Pueblo Amante de Maria

In Celebration of the fervent love and devotion of the Filipino people to Mary
Sayaw ng Pagbati (Taditional Tempo Audio)
Sayaw ng Pagbati
The Sayaw ng Pagbati, also known as the Bati-Bati, originates from the Tagalog term Bati, meaning to greet. This long standing tradition is comprised of little girls dancing first before the images of the Risen Christ (Señor Jesus Resucitado) and His Blessed Mother (Virgen Alegria) in front of the church and then around the streets of the barrio during Easter right after the Salubong and Easter Mass.
The Dance is consists of sway balance steps in a waltzy manner with one arm placed on the waist and the other holding a white flaglet. It is the movement of the banderita where the entire meaning of the dance is seen. The waving and use of the flaglets signifies the joy of the dancers, who are said to represent angels, for the Risen Christ.
Originating in La Huerta, Parañaque City, Carmen “Ka Carmen” Rodriguez, was believed to have been the first to participate in the tradition in the early 1900s dancing along to music composed by Francisco Rodriguez (no relation to her). Ka Carmen would later take to recruiting and choreographing the dance. After her death, the responsibility of teaching the dance was passed onto Violeta “Ka Bolet” Santos, which, after her passing in 2019, was then passed onto her daughter and grandchildren.
During the early 1900's, since there were very few participants, there were only two to three bati dancers at a time, with an age usually ranging from 9 to 13. As time passed more parents and children wished to participate as many prayers and intentions were granted through the Bati. Currently most barrios have between 25-36 dancers in a group, with a dancer usually only participating once or twice to give way to the next generation of dancers. Many of those who participate pray for good health, family, and a prosperous education and future.
The bati used to be performed during two occasions; One in La Huerta during Easter Sunday; and the other after forty days, during the Ascension, in Don Galo. It was later deemed practical to just dance the bati once. Today, it is only held during Easter and in special occasions, with the other barrios like San Dionisio, Sto. Niño, San Antonio-Tramo and Tambo having their own Bati groups going around at different hours day.
Some notable occasions that the Bati was invited are the 1998, 2011 and 2012 Intramuros Grand Marian Procession; The Canonical Coronation of Nuestra Señora de Buen Suceso in 2000; The Canonization of Pedro Calungsod in 2012; The 2015 Papal Visit to the Philippines; The Centennial of the Fatima Apparition in 2017 and the Closing of the Year of St. Joseph in 2021, where the Saboy, another easter tradition of the neighboring city of Las Piñas, performed the Bati for the first time in its history. Other places have also adopted this tradition such as Sta. Rosa, Laguna, Sampaloc, Manila and Pasay City.

Viva LA PURISIMA CONCEPCION STA MARIA BULACAN
What for? Devotion to the Blessed Mother does not depend on her statues' being coronada. I hear a lot of nasty things about that- like fabricating fake stories and false testimonies and putting them ibto writing before sending them to the nuncio and to the vatican. Then during the preps for the day of coronation, a lot of money involved.
I agree that a canonical coronation does not define people’s devotion, it is a great honor that shouldn’t be used for any superficial purpose. It is sad that in recent years the honor of a coronation has been used more as a spectacle or a means for popularity rather than an actual representation of people’s devotion, though this isn’t the case for all of them, I hope that the people realize that devotion doesn’t only come in crowns and spectacles but the simple practice of true honest faith and following the example of Jesus and Mary is enough.
