There Better Be A Large Crate In China That Says "Made In America" By "SCAT"
Why Is There A Large Crate That Says Made In China In His American Shop?
Fascinating information,
I just hope for the amount of steel removed it is recycled and made into new parts. Back when they started trade schools the guys in automotive school would go pick up vehicles abandon on the interstate highway. People might come back to find their car gone.
In the mid 60’s I bought quite a few used hot rod parts from his Inglewood hot rod shop. Honest dude, fair prices. My other favorite shop was Wynns Junkyard in Torrance, where Stromberg 97’s could be had for between .50-$1.50 depending on the mood of old man Wynn.
I can't wait to purchase a scat 355 stroker crank for my holden 308😊
Surely the staff know that they're recording this video I'm surprised the boss doesn't turn around say shut the f******
Did you ever know Hank Bechtloff? HTC
Great info ,top quality
General Dynamics did not make the small Mail trucks or any Mail trucks. Kaiser Jeep which was bought by AMC and was established as AM General. and the Iron Duke was manufactured from 1977 - 1993. The GM 2300 was it’s predecessor
However I scat makes a lot great stuff and will always buy them. Keep up the great work and providing great quality products
I'll say that the man's 351 Windsor stroker crank in my (roughly)393 ci Windsor handles roughly 500 na HP plus another 250 or so NOS HP Really Well! I had heard that because of there price, people believed that they were cheap substandard cranks from China. I had tried them in the past with good results. Soon, I wreckon it was time to try another. Well, that is a tuff ass crankshaft! It carries well over 5000 lbs with crappy gears into the 12s without bitching or breaking! That's what I would say is a damn good crank! With the crazy prices of today, it's hard to fathom a crank under 400 bucks with stock rods and block performing this kind of miracle! Thanks for a damn good deal. I can't think of another bargain part of this quality. Yall are the last of a breed! I'll be your customer as long as the lord sees fit for us both to build motors. Yall Take care, -John
What an awesome interview! I have a scat crank for my VW and grew up seeing them in every VW magazine. Im so stoked to hear they have a "bread and butter" for the shop, able to stay alive in modern times. I would of never thought they did tractor cranks or even billet cranks for a model t bread slicer. My father was an engine builder for private airplanes, and they did so much heat and cryo work for the metals, its really cool to see an expert break it all down for people to understand. Thank you for this!
Do u use a AI computer to map out your diametrical size .
Biden laws that mail trucks has to chain over to electric .
My next crank will be a SCAT
Great
Some serious experience there
Great interview
There has been a strong rumour for many years that a lot of scat crankshafts are manufactured in China and are machine finished in America.
Does SCAT make a crankshaft and connecting rods for Oldsmobile 350 engines?
He gets the cranks cast in china, same with the forgings, then machines them to the final product. So mr wing chu made your crank because profits are paramount
Cast in china?
The level of attention to detail is amazing.
When I did my first gen II LT1 stroker I used Scat, I had no idea they were made in China, the engine made a somewhat disappointing 510 hp and 500 tq, it took way too much weight to balance it also, a red flag, so about mid summer getting on the expressway the crank broke into 3 pieces, so looking into what happened I learned the crank was made in China, found the problem quickly. If you buy a Callies or a Howards crank, (one in the same) from Competition Products, with the entire rotating assembly, they will balance it for you also, ready to assemble, moral to the story, always buy American, Crower, Callies or Howards, the cheap China stuff will cost you a fortune.
Chinesium.
American company !
Great story. The man behind the product. Just another genius behind the scenes quietly making it happen.
My scat crank broke at the in front of the first main now I have a two-piece crank
Then I bought a new scat crank to replace it and it needed $500 worth of Mallory metal to balance it out
@@timferguson8654 When I built my first genII LT1 stoker I used Scat, no knowing the steel comes from China, it cost me $500 in Mallory also, and it broke into 3 pieces the first summer, but I replaced it with Callies/Howards crank and rods, the engine I just built I used a Crower, Callies was backlogged for months.
Very interesting video!
Aren’t Scat parts made in china? I’m sure a lot of their parts are
They are, I learned it the hard way.
Very interesting! I could listen to him all day. Thanks for the video.
This was great would like to have a tour someday if that ever becomes available
Where can I get a hat like he's wearing? Scat makes great reliable parts.
That’s a Snap On hat.
Running a scat 9000 light weight race crank .in my 408 Mopar small block 67dart . Edelbrock CNC Victor heads.13.5 compression Ross race pistons Costume grind comp cam @703 lift .t&d rocker arms Manton push rods. See you at the march meet at Formosa in 2025.
Good luck, when I built my first stroker, 383 LT1, my Scat crank broke into 3 pieces the first summer, I now use Callies/Howards or Crower.
Anything is possible...at 8000 RPM s ...my best friend over revved his Chevy 350 and shot the Piston and rod straight out the side of the block...OH SNAP...
@@JamesLintz-h9j That's not good, as long as you have a good big capacity oil pan and a good oil pump, I've never had a problem with the bottom end, except of course the one time, but that was not an oiling issue, it was substandard parts, the valvetrains have been the issue for me. I'm into road racing; the engines need to stand up to sustained RPM for long periods of time, I solved my valvetrain problems by building longer stroke engines and making huge torque, I keep the rpm,s below 7,000 now, build a bottom end strong enough to handle the torque, this summer will be my 5th year racing this 383 LT1, making 640 lb/ft of torque, AFR heads, Comp cam, GM lifters, Callies crank and rods, Ross pistons, 13.5/1 on 93 Sunoco pump gas, I'm so glad I chose to go in this direction with this engine, absolute beast on the track, I've built 3 others just like it, one for my street car and 2 for others.
I've been enlightened of a lot of this in jr high shop class. Shop class and music class comes and goes in public school's. It comes and goes from generation to generation as time goes by ...I suppose. It takes a lot to start a program like this up in public schools. Anyway I'm sixty Last of the baby boomers we had shop class both wood and metal classes. Some of this is no new news to me . But if you do think of it. It is any wonder that these guys make any money at all. No hacking around here. Those carbide bits are not cheap to begin with. The time he is talking about. Costs money! I'm figuring that it's a wonder people like this is in business at all. Don't trouble them. If you need or want something done have you're stuff together before approaching them for work. They pretty much can do it but they really can't take time talking about it explaining these things to you.before they get to rolling up their sleeves to get to doing it. Kind of it is any wonder that there in business at all.. what they do is a Joy though. Some people just don't get this.
All this time I thought they were made out of wild animal do-do.
Scat specializes in performance Cranks,Rods that are made from several different alloy choices and machined for different uses. Quality is Superb
Before non stock rods , racers ground all excess metal off O.E. forged rods. (Ya , GM actually put cast rods in lo output stuff-50s to 80's, that U don't want) Then balance all to lightest 1.
The problem I have with Scat is that no one answers the phone. I bought a rotating assembly October 18th 2024. I was promised it would be delivered in 4-5 weeks . Today is December 28th and I have not recieved anything. Scatt has my money 50% of thr purchase price. Every time I call the phone is busy no matter what time of day I call the phone is busy. If I get through I'm on hold and I have been on hold for over an hour many times. From my point of view this is a very poorly run company Eagle quoted me the same assembly for 400 bucks less and guaranteed me it would be here in 6 weeks looks like I should have gone with Eagle😕 If I don't hear from Scat by the 7th of January 2025 I'm going to cancel the charge and call Eagle I have had enough...
I hope I caught you in time, both Scat and Eagle import China steel, first stroker I built I used Scat, not knowing, well come summer the crank broke into 3 pieces, long story short get your money back and call Competition Products, you can buy Callies or Howards, they are the same actually, 100% American made, and they will balance your rotating assembly for you ready to assemble, I use Crower also 100% American too, and they always answer the Phone, really good people.
American made
NO, they import China steel, mine brock into three pieces in 3 months.
I got a 408 stroker crank from scat in a Cleveland engine brand new right now spending the winter in my living room so it stays nice and warm
Good luck, my stroker Scat broke into 3 pieces in three months, China steel, Eagle too, Crower, Callies and Howards 100% American made.
Good good for Tom. It's amazing how when things go right it can make such a difference to America. I feel so bad about him being in California though. It's not even close to what it was and hurtful to see. All because of a few Men & Women running it. Washington State & Oregon is following faster than we imagine.
I met Tom in 1961 buying parts at his folks back yard. He was the same then as now. We use his Super light cranks and rods in our dirt 1/2 mile 3000# car and never broke anything. Dirt track engine are beat to death and very hard on parts.
What a great story … he’s amazing…
Scat makes perfect cranks
Great company tour. Maybe another big name company’s can do the same that we buy our parts from
Thank you for sharing!
