How to set up air ride suspension - Air Lift Performance, Accuair, Raceland, Airtekk, Ridetech

In this video, I go over how to properly set up the air spring and strut assembly so that it performs its best. This is specific to Air Lift Performance bags on the VW/AUDI MQB platform, but also applies to other applications, and other manufacturers that use a similar bag over strut assembly. Good info here. I put new Toyo Celcius on a car I ended up selling but got a chance to drive through snow and ice. Like you said, better than all season tire but not as good as a winter tire. My daughter has the firestone blizzak and they work amazing on her front wheel drive car. My wife's honda pilot has 20,000 miles on her nokian entyre 2.0 tires and they are excellent in winter & summer. After 20,000 miles still over 60% tread left. I'm debating putting Nokian WR G4's on my front wheel drive work car as some customers have complained about howling noise after 15,000+ miles and tread life quickly declining in the summer. Any opinion on the WR 64 on those two topics?

    So if I understand, for me says I have to run 50 psi for my ride high so I need to actually adjust the strut it self to the height I want while driving whilst I’m aired at 50psi.

    • @miscstuff4789
      @miscstuff4789 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think of the bag as a spring. If you lowered your car you would most likely want a stiffer spring, but to get a bag stiffer you have to increase the pressure which raises the car (lengthens the strut). So the correct procedure is to drive the car and set the pressures for the best RIDE and ignore the height. Once you've figure out how you want it to ride you adjust the threaded tubes to the height you want the car. Now you have the ride you want at the height you want.

    • @williamkirsopp4373
      @williamkirsopp4373 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@voytopuesto There is 2 reasons: 1) A stiffer rear sway bar on a front-wheel-drive car will reduce understeer. Typically, a front-wheel-drive car will handle better with a rear sway bar that is stiffer than the OEM piece. Vice versa for rear wheel drive car. 2) Changing the front on this platform takes 3x as long as the rear, you're required to lower the subframe. As you can see the rear is a quick easy mod that's more effective at reducing understeer compared to the front sway bar.

  • @miscstuff4789
    @miscstuff4789 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Finally, someone who actually talks about the mechanics of the strut instead of just installing it and playing with pressures. I'm install an Air Lift Performance system from a Lexus on a '69 BMW so I'm customizing the front OEM struts. Understanding how the bag and the adjustable strut tube work together is critical. Thank you.

      Make sure you’re driving at the recommended PSI, and the stroke of the shock is at about 50%, or whatever they recommend for your application! You can then adjust your ride height independently of these things using the threaded shock body, if your application allowed. Good luck!

    Why did you not test the all weather tires ?

    • @NN-rd3mk
      @NN-rd3mk 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some all weather tires actually tested better than many winter tires on snow and ice. They are fantastic in winter conditions. The best winter tire is only marginally better. All seasons/winter tires are obsolete for most people. All weather tires are suitable for most people in the snow. Better than some winter tires in snow and ice and can be left on all year. Never again panic to get your tires changed due to an early snowfall. Far cheaper since no ugly rims, storage or changing twice a year. They qualify as a winter tire where it's required. Nokian WR G4 or Toyo Celsius. All seasons are obsolete now. Why would you put a tire on that's terrible in the snow so only really 3 seasons? Winter tires are also obsolete for most people. All weathers are rated to last 100K km and there is no noise like many winter tires. Once OEMs put all weathers on new cars and people find out they are fantastic in the snow and ice most people won't bother with winter tires. Search TH-cam for "Tip of the Week: All Weather Tires". Search TH-cam for "New All-Weather Tires Outperform Some Snow Tires | Consumer Reports"

    • @vttperformance9825
      @vttperformance9825 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NN-rd3mk the old saying you get what you pay for definitely rings true with tires. While some all weather tires may out perform a winter tire, the best winter tire money can buy will absolutely out perform the best all weather tire money can buy. I think a lot depends on your location, which I touched on in the video. If you only experience mild winter conditions (one or 2 snow storms a season and some icing) then an all weather may be the way to go, and you may not notice the difference if you were on a winter tire. We are located in northern Vermont and experience very severe winters where you will definitely feel the performance benefits of a winter tire over an all weather.

    Is it better to get alignments at the dealer or does it matter?

    • @vttperformance9825
      @vttperformance9825 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the vehicle. Some newer vehicles that have lane departure warnings, or radar-guided cruise control require specialist tools that most independent shops don't have due to cost. (Every manufacturer has their own tools, which can cost thousands of dollars each). So you are limited to the dealer. If your vehicle does not have any of those features then an independent shop should do just fine. It really comes down to how skilled the technician is. Find a local shop that has a good reputation.

      Yes, absolutely! I also have a MK6 GTI and upgrading the rear sway bar made a huge difference to the handling. For a Golf, the GTI rear sway bar is a good option to pair with the stock front sway bar. Be careful not to make the rear too stiff compared to the front as the handling may become twitchy and cause over-steer.

      @vttperformance9825 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      B Muns a rear sway bar is a great addition to any car if you’re looking to improve the handling. You’ll feel an instant improvement. As for the turbo inlet and charge pipes, you will see a minimal improvement in responsiveness and overall power, but don’t expect them to be a game changer. Those modifications I recommend when going to a full Stage 2 package, as you need to remove all the restrictions in the intake tract to get full benefit. Thanks for your comment and for watching!

    Wouldn't it be correct that the larger the vehicle (with larger wheels) the more important alignment is, because the centrifugal force of the weight of the wheel is compounded by the rate the wheel is spinning?

    • @vttperformance9825
      @vttperformance9825 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Adams That’s an interesting question. Given that wheel alignment is actually determined by the suspension components that support the weight of the vehicle, I don’t think that the rotating mass of the wheels & tires is going to throw the alignment out of spec as the vehicle is moving down the road.
