Waste Methane Capture form Legacy PA Mines (12/12/24) Brent Bobsein, CNX
There is a unique opportunity in PA to capture waste methane from active and abandoned mines, also known as coal mine methane and utilizing it. This coal mine methane is predominantly vented to atmosphere and occurs throughout PA even at abandoned mines which have ceased active mining decades ago. The presentation will provide a cursory overview of the mining process, the need for degasification, a review of applicable laws, industry practice, incentive programs, and the opportunity for PA to align global environmental policy goals with local economic development amongst communities impacted by the decline of the coal industry.

Challenges to interpreting Devonian terrestrial environments, (11/14/24), Dr. Dennis Terry
มุมมอง 27421 วันที่ผ่านมา
Terrestrial strata of the Devonian Catskill Wedge preserve numerous paleosols that have similarities to modern day entisols, inceptisols, alfisols, vertisols, and most recently, gelisols. At the local scale, lateral and vertical changes in paleosols can be attributed to proximity to paleochannels across ancient floodplains (entisols vs. inceptisols vs. alfisols), and changes in parent material ...
Geology of Fallingwater, Wright’s masterpiece of organic design (10/10/2024) Zelt et al.
มุมมอง 5092 หลายเดือนก่อน
Summary Built of fine-grained, marginal-marine sandstone from the upper Pottsville Formation, incorporating large boulders and resting on bedrock of coarse-grained, fluvial Homewood sandstone, cantilevered over a stream and waterfall, and with stories and balconies that echo underlying rock strata, the organic design of Fallingwater is rooted in geology. Trace fossils, ripple marks, syneresis c...

The “Haystacks” - A Devonian Silcrete, Brett McLaurin PhD (04/18/24)
มุมมอง 4788 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Haystacks are an enigmatic stratigraphic interval first recognized within the fluvial Huntley Mountain Formation (Devonian-Mississippian) along Loyalsock Creek in Sullivan County, PA. The Haystacks are distinctive from the bounding sandstones of the Huntley Mountain Formation due to pervasive silicification that has obscured sedimentary structures. In addition to its occurrence at Loyalsock...

Modern mapping techniques have been employed to develop a more accurate picture of stratigraphic and structural relationships at several sites including the New Paris Quarry in Bedford County PA, the National Limestone Quarry at Mount Pleasant Mills (NLQ-MPM), Snyder County, PA, the Mohawk Valley Mineral Mining (MVMM) property in Sprakers, NY and “Area 52” near Canajoharie, in Montgomery County...
Investigating the Geology of PA’s Riverbanks: Bluffs, Terraces and Karst Features (11/09/2023)
มุมมอง 304ปีที่แล้ว
Ever wonder why Fort Hunter, which was “built on a bluff overlooking the Susquehanna River” ended up being situated where it was? What is a bluff in the first place? Geologists have been debating the problem of PA’s river bluffs for over a century. The Susquehanna and its tributaries not only have active “bluffs” along their modern banks, but there are relict bluffs or terraces identifiable in ...

Constraining vertical range of the SE Laurentide Ice Sheet using surface exposure dating (9/14/23)
มุมมอง 128ปีที่แล้ว
Presentation Summary: At the height of the last ice age most of the northeastern United States was covered by the Laurentide Ice Sheet. Much is known about how the margin retreated northwards during the transition to warmer climates. What is less well known is how the surface of the ice sheet responded. Here we present surface exposure ages from mountain peaks in the Adirondack Mountains, along...
Mississippian fossil plants from the eastern USA (HAGS meeting May 11, 2023): James R. Jennings, PhD

Presentation Summary: Fossils of Mississippian land plants are poorly known compared to those of the Pennsylvanian, but have notably been found on the border of the Illinois Basin, in the Valley Coal Field of southwestern Virginia, and adjacent to the Anthracite Fields of eastern Pennsylvania. Because plant remains occur as dispersed fragments in various modes of preservation, a confusing proli...
Applying non-traditional stable isotopes to traditional geologic problems (4/13/23 ) Adam Ianno PhD
มุมมอง 51ปีที่แล้ว
Presentation Summary: Isotope geochemistry is a widely applicable field that uses measurements of isotopic ratios to diagnose and interpret many different geologic processes occurring from core to atmosphere and beyond. Much of this work is performed by measuring the ratio of different atomic masses of single elements (oxygen-16 vs. oxygen-18, iron-54 vs. iron-56) using a mass spectrometer. Thi...

What a fantastic presentation. We live south of Richmond VA and have found shells and bones here in the creeks. Seems like we’re looking here at the Yorktown Formation. I wish I could easily identify the types of Chesapecten we have found. They all seem a bit difft.

Remarkable fossils, and Jim gives a very informative (and witty) overview of early land plant evolution. Kind of incredible to me that so many of the plants represented in these fossils have have descendants whose morphology so closely resembles those found in plants from long ago. The talk marches through the major events in land plant evolution, with beautiful fossil examples. The concept of "seed ferns" is really interesting.
