Nice job Hank! Thank you for doing this.

This is fascinating

Hello! I am from Romnia and i begin this year a project for an ufo cherry orchard. Can you tell me if you know if i can use the power hurrow to clean the row between the trees, due to the fact that the trees are plamted on a 45 angle? Thank s a lot!
Poti folosi ce vrei, atata timp ca nu lovesti trunchiul.
These newer 2-d systems for trees are very similar to grape vineyards. Vineyard equipment is what I would look at (including towers for spraying). Many Vineyards spray or wipe 2,4-D and a grass herbicide (like Sethoxydim) down the row, others use a spring-loaded / hydraulic controlled guarded string trimmer to cut the grass/weeds between trees (what I do, to eliminate the chemicals). Another option is heavy mulching, but that can become costly unless you have a sawmill or similar cheap source of chipped wood. Keeping the canopy thin and the trees short (1.25x the alley width (mine are kept at between 8-9ft (2.5m) (allowing narrow alleys between the rows, mine are 7 feet (2.25m)) makes the experience working in the orchard much better. I planted an acre of tall spindle apples and half an acre of UFO cherry, and from now on, I think I'll use UFO for everything. My goal is to only need a small step ladder to harvest, and eventually only need a very low (and safe) platform.

Very interesting and informative.
