I have a 2600C, completely disassembled it and cleaned all parts-internal and out, regreased with Superlube, and Penn Reel Oil. Serviced the anti-reverse assembly, plus pinion and main gear, oscillation block, cleaned the bearing and lubed with oil. lt feels brand new. l'm mounting the reel on an Ugly Stik 8' Catfish rod with 30 lb braid to chase stripers and catfish up to 20-30 lbs. GREAT TUTORIAL

I’ve been collecting vintage spinning reels for over 7 years now and have over 420 in my collection., I’d like to get more into rod collecting but I just don’t know enough about them. Of course to match my spinners I would be looking for mostly surf rods as I have more 8saltwater reels than others.mis there any resource for learning more about vintage saltwater rods?

You have such a wicked sounding laugh but you’re working on one of my favorite reels. I own five of them. I’ve added a second bearing in place of the plastic bushing on my reels and they have turned out very nice. I could only add one bearing as the bushing on the oscillation gear side of the main gear shaft| could not be replaced with a bearing. The reason the vintage Daiwa BG (black/gold) reels like your handle is that all the BG reels from BG10 to BG90 all have three bearings. I like the GS-9 and GS-90. Of the silver series reels only the 7000C has three bearings. You can add bearings to many of the silvers but be careful. Altogether I have about 90 vintage Daiwa spinning reels in my collection with over 420 reels in the complete collection. Dennis Kuntz on 2nd Chance Tackle on TH-cam calls my collection my “Museum” I own eleven Daiwa worm gear reels - the 8000 series. The 8600 and 8700 in this series all have three bearings and date back to the early 1970s. There is also a 8100 and 300 in that series. To my memory these 8600 and 8700 reels were the only worm gear spinning reels with three bearings until Abu Garcia made the famous Suveran reels in the early 1990s. Of 1 - Chris Jenkinsrcourse all the Abu Garcia center drag reels of that same time period also were worm gear reels with as many as six bearings. I own an Abu Garcia CD6 3000 reels as well as seven Abu Garcia center drag reels in my collection. I liked your 9000C video. Thank you sharing it! - Chris Jenkins. PS. I think the BG handle looks great!

Nice reel for sure. I have a Abu that I bought for cheap because it had a problem and I had to bag it up because I changed out or fixed everything and it still doesn't work right. I'm guessing when I take out of the bag I'll see what I missed. I think I missed a worn part or swapped out something that was from a parts reel that might of been as bad as the original 😂. This is a fun hobby but you sometimes just have to be able to put it in a bag a look at it another day. I use those pencil zipper bags the kids use in 3 ring binders to keep all the small plastic bags of parts together. They also work great to organize parts and they are like a dollar each.

I have a few of these I got off Facebook for next to nothing. This next year I'm going to use a couple of them to show all these got to have the newest of everything a thing or two. I have a great bank spot right below a dam and it seems like 99 percent of the people try to make fishing more complicated than it needs to be. I can take a white 1/16 oz jig or smaller and I will catch, small mouth, large mouth, crappie, panfish all day long. I don't cast into mess but just fish all the small pockets where a fish would get out of the current and strike out of hunger or strike out of anger. Hope you're feeling better!

I used to do reel repairs, and has taken quite a few Revo Toros apart. So if you should receive some more in your shop over time, I can mention a few weak spots. The first are the clutch mechanism, that tends to tighten up over time. It has to be completely taken apart(take pictures, and have a small plier ready, as the reassembling of the mechanism can be tricky). All the moving parts should be lightly greases, preferably with a Teflon based grease like Cal's or Magnalube. In the first versions of this reel, the metal rocker arm was often damaged as well, and had to be replaced. The metal rocker arm, was on the later versions reinforced with steel, to absorb the stress. The second weak spot is the housing holding the bearing on the drive side. The aluminum seems to deteriorate in contact with the steel bearing(salwater), and could get stuck. This bearing I normally packed with grease, as it´s only function it to support the pinion gear. Hope this helps, if one day you should get a really bad example on the bench. Regards Morten.

The Zero Hour Bomb Co. was not a defence contractor. They made timing devices to set off charges for the drilling industry. If they made timers for the military during WW2 I don't know. But it wasn't a defence contractor. I enjoy watching your reel tinkering videos as I like to do the same stuff with my reels. Glad your on the mend.

Hello again. I just cleaned and lubed my cardinal 753. It was a breeze after watching your video! I’m 63. I purchased my 753 back in the early 1980’s I’m guessing. I fished with it when I was young then it ended up with my vintage reels I collect. The grease I removed was original and it took some elbow grease to clean and lube. It’s amazing the reel ran fairly smooth with all the old dried up grease in it! However, it’s like butter now. Thank you for your videos! It makes this new hobby of mine a joy!

Very similar to the K-Mart Sportfisher fly reels that were made in Japan, I have several of those (and re-branded variations in color such as the Olympic 470 and Shakespeare 2531 or 7915), same design as those and may even have interchangeable parts. This reel has drag knob in a different location and the foot is permanently attached to the pillars (Sportfisher has these removeable with screws). These reels are bomb-proof, perfect for a beginner, readily available on the auction site (usually quite cheap) and easy to work on. Thanks for showing.

I’m nervous about leaving at a “professional “ reel repair. Last time I used them was when I bought 2 new very expensive Shimano reals. They apologized and sent me 2 brand new reels.

This series Orvis reels were manufactured for them by Zangi in Italy. These are among the finest and simplest reels of their type. As you noted the gear train is identical in concept to the original Penn Greenie Spinfisher as well as the Shakespeare 2052/2062 and DAM Quick Finessa reels. It should be noted that these reels are not painted, they are Harcdcoat Anodized which is a much more durable finish that actually penetrates the surface of the base material. Zangi also made and branded their own reels as well as Ted Williams reels for Sears, Roebuck and Company in the “100” series which went up to 600 (I believe). They were made (I think) in the late 60’s through the seventies. After that Orvis imported rear drag reels from Korea. The 100 models came in three varieties, the “A” was the standard freshwater version, the “S” was a saltwater version with stainless steel key components, the “SS” was the “S” version with a high speed gear ratio. The series included the 150 (the largest), the 100 (next size down), the 75 which was the 100 with a slightly smaller rotor and spool and then the 50 ultra light reel. IMHO, These reels are comparable to Alcedo, DAM Quick, Zebco Abu Cardinal, Shakespeare Royal Maroon and Penn Spinfisher. Regards, John in Savannah

John, Great tutorial! I have a DAM Quick 4000 and a 3000 scheduled for maintenance in early January. With your video I feel a lot more confident taking on this assignment. Wishing you a Happy and Safe Holiday! Tad

You can definitely service them! These are great reels, but simple! Thanks for watching!

My bad if you mentioned it in the vid but what oil did you use for the fast moving parts? Ie:the bearings/Spool shaft etc

Did your bearing upgrade kit you bought say whether it would work on the UC4601C (the original Ultra cast model)? I have that reel and want to do the bearing upgrade (Dads Old Tackle doesn’t say either way), this would be for bearings associated with worm gear and level wind cog only because spool bearings can’t be replaced on that model. Also, as far as reel age, another video said you subtract 10 from the last two numbers to get the year (that reel you worked on does look like mid-90’s to me, most of the post-2000 reels were silver cage I think, but not sure?). Thanks for a great video, learned a lot.
