Thanks for instruction video, luv penn reels.
Well explained. Giving one a service now. Definitely wasn't a common model.
Love the content. I do the same thing buy old stuff for next to nothing and try to make them run again. Since you are using your phone, you can switch the photo/video setting from 4-3 to 16-9 and it will fill the entire screen. Thanks again for the content 🍻.
Thank you and thank you for watching!
Great video John!! Buddy ,I swear you and I have the very same taste in vintage reels!! I just love Ambassadeur reels. I enjoy upgrading and changing the bearings in the Ambassadeur reels. I have abec 7 stainless bearings in most of my round reels. I know a lot of folks like ceramic bearings but I still prefer the stainless due to the fact that they are quieter. I really enjoy your video's buddy, Respectfully , Christopher Russell
I really appreciate the encouragement! I've got a really cool Ambassadeur on the bench right now, stay tuned!
You can't know if drag's working without line on spool.
Mine had dried grease under the arm and cleaning and oil fixed mine
I have one that seems like everything is running right I may have to mess with the mag system but it doesn’t really want to cast like the spool isn’t spinning freely do you know what may be causing it?
It's hard to say without being able to look at it. The first thing to look for is dried up lubricant.
Classic and bulletproof
Simple Green HD Pro is their best cleaner. Zero etching on even aluminum and can be used on food preparation surfaces. (non toxic) The solution is purple. Home Deep sells it! A few months back I bought one in PRISTINE condition on eBay for $22. Before I use it, I want to make sure the drag is the best it can be. If the leather and Teflon washers are done, would you use new ones or go Carbontex? Where would I get new originals if that's what you'd do? And only grease the leather, and not all three? Thanks! Yeah... I used these when a teen in the 70s too. Bought a Pristine 7000C for $25. That will be next. And thank YOU for the DETAILED video. Much Appreciated!
Thank you for the tip and for watching! I use to use the aviation grade simple green but it got too expensive As for drag washers, if you can get carbontex that's a really good smooth drag. If not, someone might be able to cut new Teflon washers. I've been lucky so far and not had to replace any. I always use cal's on leather and fiber washers, but not on Teflon
@@jonhammes6209 Thank you! Cal's Tan it is!
Hi , I'm confuse in your video ? You saying a brand new penn 350 out the box ? You saying in its design ? The leveline screw patent designs DOES NOT WORK WELL ? ARE OR YOU SAYING IT ACTUALLY WORK BUT IN PROPER MAINTENANCE AND CARE ON A USED ONE WILL RENDER IT USELESS ?
The 350m has been around since the 1970's. This one is new old stock. Parts are no longer available for this model

Where did you go to find out all of the info on yours a friend gave me one he found dumpster diving and it seems pretty early
I'm a member of several Ambassadeur Facebook pages, I simply post a picture and let the experts educate me!
Hello, please tell me what you think about this 5500 cl3 reel? Should I buy it or is there another alternative? And how much cord can I wind 0.3 mm
These are great reels, my favorite baitcasters You should be able to put 255m of .3mm on it
Hi ya have you done a Abu 508 thanks nigel
No I haven't! If I find one, I will buy it and do a video Thank you for watching!
What size bearing is the ones to replace the bushings for the spool please I have an old ambassador 5000 and would like to upgrade to bearings
On this style bushings it takes a custom bearing, 3.2mm ID, 10mm OD, 4mm wide
@@jonhammes6209 thank you for the speedy reply I will try to find some 👍
I just found an Old 33 at an estate sale. It's front and back covers are Black, Brass gears but something very odd..... The spinner head is White ceramic with a Brass Nipple? Any ideas what year.
I'm not a expert but the guys on the Facebook page, Zebco Collectors definitely are. I would join the page and post some pictures of the reel and they can give you the full history
The 4601 would do fine unless you get something big on. Plus no bait clicker on the 4601 I would get a 5601c4, it has a bait clicker but is small enough for freshwater fish. In either case, the Leveline will work against you for longer surf casts, but not by a lot
Yes, use a 6501 palm side plate@@kennethfriedl3428
I ended up picking up an Ambassadeur 4501 Striper Black. 😎🎣 6+1 bearings (2 of which are ceramic spool bearings) and 2 shoe Bakelite brakes, and brass gears. I’m probably going to pair it with a 6’10” or 7’ Medium moderate fast composite rod. I’m going West Coast Striper fishin baby! Wooooooooo Hoooooooooo!!!! I can’t wait…
Abu Ambassadeur is the Harley Davidson of fishing reels.
Hello, do you know where I can buy this reel please? I can't find it anywhere
Liked the vid. Also just subscribed to your channel. Keep them coming and good luck
Thank you! I haven't had much fishing content this summer since I've been down sizing. 24 years of stuff to move. It's been a mess! Stay tuned, though! Next year will be more fishing than fixing 😊 Thank you for watching and for the sub!
@@jonhammes6209 welcome. We'll good luck out there
This reminds me of my Grandad's old reels! <3
I picked up a 20/10 along with a black Zebco 600. I bundled the deal for $9. Cool little reel that 20/10 looks brand new. I caught 5 bluegills, and a 2lbs channel cat. First day out with it. Cool video.
That's an awesome deal with a great outcome! Thank you for watching!
Hello, thank you very much for the very insightful video. You use black Teflon washers at 22:05. Felt washers were installed there on my roll and they disintegrated during disamsembly. Can you tell me where you bought these Teflon-washers and what dimensions yours have?
You are correct, those are felt washers. I misspoke and called them Teflon. They are not needed for proper reel function, they are used to seal water out of the bushings Thank you for watching!
Thank you for the excellent video. I followed along and was able to diagnose and repair a very special 753 that was gifted to me in 1990 at 12 years old. The wonderful gentleman that gave it and taught a boy to fish trout is gone, but thanks to you the reel he gited is still here and functioning perfectly. It had been sitting on a garage shelf for at least the last 10 years. This coming weekend i plan to take my 8 year old trout fishing for the first time. With any luck he'll catch his first brown with it just like his dad did. Thank you and god bless.
And that is why I love doing these videos! If I help one person get an old reel that has memories, going again, that is awesome! Thank you for sharing your memories and thank you for watching!
Just wanted to say thank you for posting this video! I recently came into possession of a 100a and 150a that were completely caked with grease that had turned to the consistency of wax. Watching your video have me enough nerve to open them up and get them spinning again! I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to checking out the rest of your content!
And that is exactly why I do this, to help people! Thank you for watching and subscribing!
Im also a huge fan of the silver series. i have 8 or so 1000c and variants including super sport 1 which is silver but smoother than the regular silver. also several gold series reels. I just picked up a D7000,D4000,D1600 of the regal series that came out right after the gold series with the silent AR (the black ones) and while they're almost identical they dont have the wonderful click we all love and associate with fishing and it also has internal bail trip, but i digress. nothing beats one of these silver series reels
They are really good reels! I also have a few 500c and 1000c that I ultralight fish with!
Thank you for this! I've inherited one from my FIL, and I wasn't sure how to employ the level...will see if it turns, but I don't think it does.
Usually it's just dried up grease keeping it from working. A shot of wd40 sometimes fixes it!
@@jonhammes6209 I checked it out, and it does indeed spin while reeling! I just need to test it now while actually fishing and see how well it works. Thanks again!
I'm glad I could help!
@@jonhammes6209me too!
Okay this is much much much closer to the 1958 6000B I have managed to acquire. Thank you!
Holy crap I was thinking this was the closest looking thing out of their 6000s to match my childhood reel I grew up learning to fish on with my papa when you read the seriel and realized this is IDENTICAL to mine down to the year model, series, and year made. They may have even waved to each other on their way out of the factory. Incredible find for me this is. I’m trying to figure out how to dissemble and clean/grease/lube my second ever ambassadeur 6000. It’s a very early model of the 6000B… so early it has no indication of being a B stamped on the reel and also does not have a serial number whatsoever. Paid $61 for it and it came with the original manual, leather carrying case, oiler tube, and spare parts bottle. Insane find on my end.
Why do you not oil the bearings ?
New bearings shouldn't need oil. You can if you want though
Reel nice....
Thank you! Thank you for watching!
Definitely a aftermarket handle. If that a simon shimomura reel handle. Its worth some money. I love abu garcias. I have several. Great video...
I will have to look into that! I knew ot wasn't original. Thank you!
I just love to replace that one bearing. Can't understand why they wouldn't put them on both sides guess they didn't want them to freeze up. Thanks for the video.
l have one of those that still works perfectly. We bought it about 1966 with a rod for probably less than 10 bucks.
I'm very impressed with this reel!
Another great reel on the highlight..keep it up sir..
Thank you! "Life" certainly has slowed me down a bit in the last few weeks with downsizing and moving, but that's all behind me now! I have some nice reels ready to be videod soon!
@@jonhammes6209 no one can be excluded fm the word..because it is reality.may yours always in great shape.
I'm working on mine
I have two of these reels and have also used them since the late 70’s when I was a teenager. I was thinking about putting braid on them. Do you think these old reels would hold up to braid? I have mine on ugly stik 10ft bigwater rods and use them for big blue catfish
I think you will overload the drag system. If you want to stay in 30lbs braid and just add capacity you will be fine.
You said a AS568 268 o-ring. That is a 8 1/2" ID - incorrect. What is the correct AS568 number?
All I can tell you is what my o-ring guage said. It's been a couple of months since I built this reel
@@jonhammes6209 The I ordered a AS568 268 and I received a 8 1/2" ID. The AS568 Dimensions Chart states a 268 is 8 1/2 ID, 1/8 CS. The correct one may be either a 228 or 229. Can you provide me the correct size number?
@user-fd6wg1dd3g I honestly can't tell you which one it is. I've packed up my entire house, and I'm moving. I don't even know where that reel is now or if I did have it, how can I measure it installed. I'm sorry this did not work out for you but I can only go by what size my o-ring guage tells me it is? I've used that guage as a field service heavy equipment mechanic for many years and it's never told me a wrong size
@@jonhammes6209 I now know there is a fix for my Zebco 808 and 888 reels. Thank you for your feedback.
I need a couple crank shaft shims and the nut that holds the handle on, it was cross threaded apparently when I took the reel apart to clean it. I was wondering if you might know where I could order them from and what sizes they are?
I currently do not have any spare parts for this reel

What is the black sliding knob on the right side for? How is it used?
That is a line out clicker, or bait clicker. Once your bait is in the water, back off the drag, set the clicker. If a fish hits it will alarm you with a noise, and hopefully you won't have your rod and reel pulled into the water
I just got a Pflueger Supreme push button model ... unused it's as old or older than me .. I'm 63,... yours looks a bit older than mine... most likely...50's
I'm still learning about these older reels that pre-date me!
I have the AG seven got it on eBay from England a workhorse good drag pulled in a 35” bullred several decent size stingrays and a 42”&39” shark installed 50’tightline hollowcore braid 65lb top shot 100 yards you will not be disappointed at all mated on a 9ft vexan
They are great reels @ Thank you so much for watching!
Thanks for the video I have one that came in a box of fixer uppers not working one bail spring was bad but got it back together and it works with just one wore out spring. I did buy 2 new ones thats why I looked up your video. Good work they are kinda fiddly for a Mitchell.
Glad I could be of help! Thank you for watching!
Nice
I was yelling during the video. Anti reverse dog! Good videos though. Did you ever find a way to shim a bearing on that crank side?
I could here you! Lol! Yes, I did put a bearing on the handle shaft!
@jonhammes6209 did you have that in a video somewhere? I've got a couple 6000s I'm about to go through. I'd like to know the bearing size you used if it's not posted in a video somewhere. Thanks.
@@adamwhite4378I will look and see. I know I ordered the shims and spacers off Amazon. I want to say the bearing size was 13x10x4 but don't hold me to that
I have the same reel but the 2200. It was my father’s. I am wondering what you used as a cleaner to “give it a bath”?
For the internal parts I use a ultrasonic cleaner with water/Dawn/Simple Green mixture. For the external parts I use a parts washer with straight WD40 in it, I buy it by the gallons! Thanks for watching!
