Exploring Barrington Tops, Dorrigo and Dalmorton!
BARRINGTON TOPS
Welcome to Offroad Touring, Grace and I leave the Watagans behind and make way to Barrington Tops National Park where we look for some 4wding, head to many camping and picnic areas as well as some lookouts. It is quiet foggy and some rainfall so the tracks are very slippery. We then make way to the small town of Dorrigo before punching up to Dalmorton. Overall, this is a nice exploring adventure!

Cows and calves for the win!!!!!!!!! I love your vlogs.......
Hahaha no way, definitely rabbits! But I must admit calves are cute 🤣, thank you!!
@offroadtouring here in Colorado we don't have enough hawks for all the rabbits!!!
Ahh right yeah fair enough, I'd image there's plenty of them then!!
Great one guys. Those tracks got really slippery and glad you went for the winch option. This is what sensible wheeling and working within your limitations looks like. That said, the Barrington Tops are absolutely amazing in the winter, though. Also, Picaridin for you skin and Permethrin for your clothes, guaranteed to keep those leeches and ticks away. Cheers and wish you guys a merry Christmas and happy holidays.
Thank you heaps for the support @Werkar27 Yeah definitely best to just take the sensible option in many cases haha in saying that still have some fun! Yeah we really want to head up there during the snow season one day if it's all open then! And that's good to know, Grace will definitely want to try them haha. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you as well, thank you!!
These Bunbaberg videos are great! (this one and Part 2 as well). I watched them as they first came out, and now I've watched them again. Lots of tense moments and things going wrong, but it was good to watch how you dealt with it all.
Wow thank you heaps for the support @oz-wozza Yeah looking back, there was abit that went wrong in that whole trip and abit of first moments for us as well! We are definitely glad to have still done a good trip with challenges but minimal to no damage!!
Yes can confirm, the Watagans are stinky as. Wasn't fun going through the stagnant water, my boots can confirm 😂😂 17:05 that's really strange. You did not have drive only in the bog hole and not after. I know those bog holes can create a lot of suction but at least one of the wheels should've spun. Just bummed for an answer there. Do let us know if you figure that out. I do have lockers on my Hilux but no winch. So if I ever get stuck I'll be keeping that in mind. Our setup for hiking, camping and moto-camping is the same. We just use the hiking gear (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, cook system) in the car and bike(solo). The only exceptions being a small dometic fridge and a portable toilet when car camping. Saves money, is multi use and I'm cheap 😂😂
Hahaha it really is stinky, glad it's not just us 🤣 it's never fun is that water hahah. Yeah still no idea sadly, we actually didn't have drive for like 30 mins after just sitting there, so we decided to pull everything out and clean it up while we wait. The engine would rev but no drive, and it felt like it was almost struggling to grab or something. But sadly still no idea why, only have a mate who suggested one possible thing. Before the trip I changed to an alloy radiator, in the auto, the transmission oil runs through the bottom of the rad, so when changing it lost a little bit of oil which I didn't get a chance to top up. So maybe it's got an air bubble in the fluid which could possibly couldve caused it but otherwise no idea. It was abit of an oh shit we are out in the middle of the watagans on a weekday stranded moment hahaha. But after like 1hr, got back in and sure enough had drive again at first being a slight struggle then fine. Very nice! It's good to have the gear to just get out and do it! Do you do over night hikes with that gear? And it's nice having the option to go in a car or jump on the bike and just get out!
@@offroadtouring Thanks for he reply. I'm not really sure a air bubble would cause any problems like that. Because you would've smelled and seen smoke before anything as you were in water. This has to be something else. I'm thinking somehow the moisture got into the electronics and once it was dry you were able to drive out. The only way to test this theory is to get the car into water once again 🤣🤣 Yes we do overnight hikes as well. Lamington NP is our go to for that. But it does get really busy.
@@Werkar27 yeah I wasn't 100% sure either! And that reminds me, my brother with his gu patrol. He mentioned that it couldve been water in the electronics that is under the carpet next to the auto surround. Water did get that high so it very well couldve been that! But yeah thats true, only one way to find out again hahaha. Ahh yeah thats cool! We've been wanting to get gear for overnight hikes but just haven't. Lamington Np would be nice for it!
No drones because the RAAF base/ Newcastle airport is next to it.
Ahh right thatd make sense haha, good to know!
Mackenzie's is a fun little tracks. I've taken my Pajero down it but the other direction to what you have done. A little trickier the way you went as you were going up the wash outs. Creek Rd can go & get Fed. I've been on there a couple times and been winched over, I'm not breaking my car on that. 125R is a cracking lookout, love it. You missed the plane wreck near Hunters Lookout. Never fun when you sink your rig lol. Done it myself more than once. Bog holes in Morisset Ward 21 area stink worse than The Watagans.
Yeah Mackenzie's was great and definitely fun going up! Was so tempting to try winch up that hill in Creek Rd haha but was to scared of the panels hahaha, does it get worse further up or is that the main part do you know? And a plane wreck wouldve been sick! We'll definitely have to check it out next time!! And yeah that wouldve sucked quite alot hahaha but that's the joys of it!
@@offroadtouring That section you made it to is as far on Creek Road as I have ever made it and we too turned back. Normally we do the first double rock step & climb than hit the exit track. From my understanding it gets worse. Talking to a mate now and he snapped his winch rope there over the weekend. There is not a lot left of the plane sadly but it is still there. My video from last year, Showing a QLDer Gods Country should show the wreck. I'm based on the Central Coast so The Watagans is my local.
@@OnCountryWithMick ahh yeah fair enough it is a decent cut out there! And yeah looks like it'd be a steep pull on the winch!! And that's interesting to know, I'll have to check out that vid and see what it looks like! And that's awesome that the watagans is so close!
@@offroadtouring I would love to be closer to the Blue Mountains so I could explore there more but I hate Sydney lol. Grew up in the Western Suburbs and hate the area now. The Watagans has heaps to offer though even for those that don't want to push their vehicles hard.
@@OnCountryWithMick yeah thats fair enough, blue mountains is very nice! And yeah thats true watagans is great for that!!
I haven't done Stockton yet, Hopefully early next year. I have walked Shark Hole & the bunkers a few times though and there are signs and warnings of Trail Cameras. The only road there we are allowed to drive on is Mine Camp Road heading in, the rest is National Park and we are not meant to have 4wds or bikes in there even if gates are open. They are generally only open because people have done the wrong thing and forced them open. It is a stunning area though and as much as I wouldn't mind driving it, I wont be risking the fines and I've heard plenty about them in local groups, I know a couple of people personally that have received them.
Yeah highly recommend stockton! And when you did shark hole did you go down the ladder and into it? If so was it worth it, I was very tempted to check it out. Yeah another bloke mentioned that there have been people mentioning cameras, we didn't have much idea of where you were and weren't allowed to go, it wasn't very clear being the first time going there, it was a nice drive around and 4wding but yeah just not worth it if there's cameras!
@offroadtouring Shark Hole, there is another way to walk into there without worrying about the ladder. I have been down there and it's a beautiful spot, on my video a mate went down because my joggers didn't have a lot of rubber on them and I would have gone over. I have been down since. Being a local I've heard loads of reports so that's why I've never driven in.
@@OnCountryWithMick ahh yeah thats good to know and it would be interesting going down! And yeah thays fair enough!
@@offroadtouring Yeah its nice down there. There are rod holders cemented into the rocks as well. That ladder though, that's all sorts of NOPE from me lmfao.
@@OnCountryWithMick ahh damn thats cool someone's put rod holders down there! And yeah that ladder was very sketchy with one of the bolts very loose hahaha
Abbotts Falls is about an 8km round trip. It comes back out on German Point Rd & through Casuarina Campground, The Pines etc. You can get to the bottom of it, I have a video recently from there. Doing the full loop is longer but over all easier than going back up the way you came.
Thats awesome to know! I'll have to check out your vid! Yeah the climb back up was rough hahaha
@offroadtouring yeah the climb either way is a mongrel but heading out the other way is just a constant incline, it's not tricky or slippery. The walk is a very interesting one but once you finally get down into that cave and to the bottom of the falls it is amazing. Gap Creek Falls is stunning too, shorter and just as steep but over all not as bad. Still stunning at the bottom.
@@OnCountryWithMick thanks for that info! When we head back hopefully one day soon, we'll have to either head down to the Falls or to gap Creek, that's good to know!!
@@offroadtouring glad I can be of help.
Hey champion, you have the beach permit rules in your hand yet you continue to drive where you’re not supposed too? It’s idiots like you that explain why they’re locking the beaches up to protect them. Good job
Love the Watagans, had been there recently on my CRF300. The camera doesn't do justice as to how steep some of the sections are. Loved the adventure guys, cheers. Also, the people in the burned up Patrol probably got home in a LC 😂
The Watagans is insane! And definitely alot worse on camera! That wouldve been real fun on a bike! Thanks heaps for the support and look you probably aren't wrong 🤣
Ahh the watagans my home playground for me and my s4 gu 😊 nice work! Another great vid awesome content! keep up the good work! Keen to see part 2
Ohh how awesome is that, would be heaps fun being in the area and even better with a gu!! Would be sick to have someone with knowledge, we were just wondering trying to find tracks haha. Thank you heaps for the support!!
whoops ..... should have have watched the whole thing before commenting .... gotta love a long short cut 😁
Hey Robert, no worries, seen the other comment! Let me know if you still have questions!!
Great work guy's! Love the vids keep em coming 😊
Thanks heaps for the support Jonathon!!
Hi there, just saw this trip through Wongi and was wondering if you had the directions or any road/track names you took through there, looked pretty cool with the log bridges and stuff, thanks
"Wouldn't want to park here with a Toyota handbrake 😭" That's why we leave it in gear and hope for the best😂 Really happy to see the way you guys wheeled out there. Smooth, knew your limits and didn't chew out the tracks. That was some real nice wheeling from Grace, even though I'm sure she was sweating all the while.
Thank you so much for the support! I mean if in gear doesnt work, you can park it up against a patrol, things wont budge! Hahaha. Yeah we love keeping our panels straight well as much as possible, but also not destroying tracks too much! And yeah nah she was definitely sweating through most if not all of it haha!
Massive area around Lithgow… 17:50 is called moon rock, check out Tyler Thompson driving it… Last time I was at the glow worm tunnel had the place to ourselves, looks like they have done a path all the way through it… Had wild brumbies on the track into the tunnel… Lost city is awesome spot to visit… Good on Grace for having a drive!!
Ahhh that's good to know, wasn't sure if it had a name! I'll definitely check it out. Yeah not sure how it was before they reopened the tunnel but it goes all the way through now which is cool! Lost city is great, also good that there's many different access points! And yeah indeed, I'm trying to get her behind the wheel a little more on these trips!
@ tunnel was just natural terrain before, they closed it while they built the walkway… The other end is a nice surprise, not what you would expect…that track then continues out to newnes shale works, pub, campground etc…currently closed though from landslides..only open to locals…
Ahh right yeah fair enough and not wrong at all, it's beautiful out the other end of the tunnel! Yeah we were hoping to get out to Newnes but yeah sadly was closed for us from that!
Remember to buy the beach access pass from the petrol station on the corner.
Yeah indeed, that's where we got ours, the one across from maccas? Had no idea at first but googled it and realised!
@@offroadtouring not sure why you drove all the way down to lavis lane, then back up to birubi point where the northern access is? Also, if your car is gutless now, if you throw lockers in it will be worse trying to drive all four wheels….
Well after just looking up a little about stockton, people just say best entry is via lavis, and it doesn't bother us heading for a drive! But when the wheel are just spinning, we wouldve had a better chance with lockers, gutless or not, plus just having them in genral!
gold shovel!
The drone footage was pretty awesome mate, especially at 22:56. Glad to see that you're getting good at self recoveries. All you need now is lockers and you can tackle some gnarly stuff. Really enjoying the vids guys.
Thank you heaps for the support!! Yeah definitely getting a hang of recoveries and lockers will make a world of difference which we hope to get one day haha!!
Were you in low range in that really soft sand area? That would help if you have it!! I love your travels!!
Oops you say low range later.....
Did you happen to see any signs around the Catho area (where you wear driving near the radar stations and cliffs)? Heard of people getting fines in the mail from cameras there in the bush…
Hey Paul, nah we didn't for where we drove through! However we pulled up to the north end of the shark hole walking track and there was a sign saying past that point but the rest of it had all gates open and no signals when we were there and where we drove! So hopefully we don't see any fines show up in the mail but that's good to know!
People mentioned fines to me about driving through the old train tunnels at Stockrington too a few years ago but it never happened. Damn I’m impressed you got in around Mine Camp road. I must have to go and have a look myself and bring a spare wheel cover to cover my rear plate. $65 to access a beach for a day? That’s insanely greedy of our gov!! I think we all need to get together as a collective of four-wheel-drive enthusiasts and push back on our government bloody grubs they are!!. I didn’t know you can’t use a drone at Stockton. So much tyranny involved with that beach now. Was looking forward to going over there with the family this year and maybe flying a drone around for a few minutes. I guess I won’t be buying a permit for that beach this year then I will just go around the corner to samurai. Very nice video mate. Very down to earth people you are. Not doing anything crazy out there on the tracks which I like Looks a bit crazy going up towards that bunker but I think I could probably handle it ha ha ha ha. I did go out there a few years ago and I put out an awning on one of the tracks overlooking Catherine Hill Bay. The track into where I want was a bit gnarly
@ it’s not the government in charge of this beach, it’s a group called Belmont wetlands state park…and it’s $40 a week (still a ripoff…)
@steveelliott7893 thanks heaps for the support mate! We truly appreciate it! Good no fines came through! And yeah that whole mine camp area was awesome exploring! Yeah well any price on the beach permit suck especially when you already pay for most park accesses. For stockton it's not too bad permit wise but yeah samurai is right nearby! And again thanks for the comment and support!!
Well done. When the weathers ordinary it can be a bonus. You get the place mostly to yourself. Your reward for braving the elements. Love your work
Thank you heaps for the support! And yeah thats a very goods way to at it, it's always nice with minimal others around sometimes!!
Another GREAT video!
Thank you heaps for the support! @george4x4recoverygear69
Loved the beach and drone footage guys. Be careful with those deflators, mine weren't calibrated and were letting out too much air. The last bit reminded me WA 😅😅. Cheers guys, really loving your vids.
Thank you heaps for your support!! That'd suck if they let way too much air out haha!
@@offroadtouring I see what you did there, they do suck 😂
Keep it going guys, your not viral yet but you'll get the numbers soon... Great real content...
Thank you so much for the support @MrTugone69 we truly appreciate it!!
Shame about your drone, they're not cheap. Another great video from you guys. Well done.
Yeah indeed, however I luckily had the care package on it so it was covered sort of like insurance, thankfully!!
Great video guys well done. Easy to watch
Thank you heaps for the support!!
Another great vid, guys - I can't wait to check out Tamborine after this!!
Thank you so much for the support!! And we highly recommend, there's so much to do!
Seen Tyler Thompson get out of a similar pickle by dropping all of the air out his tyres. Good to get stuck every now and then to keep your recovery skills sharp. Nice spot, hairy getting stuck on an incoming tide though.
Yeah goes to show then, abit of air out can make a world of difference! And definitely is good to keep the recovery skills sharp, you never know when you'll be caught out haha. And yeah was such a nice place!!
Youre a really lucky guy. Your gf is an extremely gorgeous girl
Thank you, she is quite amazing!!
Have you sorted your overheating issue? Changed/ checked your radiator cap or thermostat?
Yeah all sorted now, turns out it was an internally blocked radiator which is quite common on these
@offroadtouring oh yikes....I was starting with the cheap things!!!! So glad it's sorted!!
Yeah indeed had to be one of the more expensive option haha
Everyone will be saying the same ...tire pressure. Also big NO NO..for going up the dunes.
Haha yeah thats exactly right!
Great review a long term update will be interesting to see how it holds up 👍
Thank you and I agree! definitely keen to see how it holds up, we'll definitely do a long term review after 6 or 12 months!
Bit off topic but how do you find the light bar on the roof? Much glare?
Surprisingly no, your bonnet lights up but doesn't glare, if you have a silver or alloy bulbar abit higher then your bonnet it'll glare, or thicker gloss aerials I believe glare a tiny bit. But over all definitely recommend!
@@offroadtouring cheers mate appreciate your reply
Oh Wow, great set up and what a great comparison of rooftop tents. Makes us want to get one. Keep filming you gorgeous pair and it's great to see Renee in this clip too. Love you guys❤
Thank you, yeah is great to see the comparison and yeah Renee keeps tagging along alot of the trips now haha
Awesome videos guys really in joy watching them 🍺👍🤙🍷
Thank you heaps, that's awesome to hear, glad you like them!!
This one was hectic!!! But what an absolute adventure. Super impressed as to how calm the two of you were and kept trying, but still within your limits. Enjoyed the entire epi and loved the track opening exercises 😂
Thank you heaps!! Hahah yeah there was a definite slight panic at few crossings 🤣 but that's it, just try to stay within your limits haha. Glad you enjoyed then ep!!
Superb video. Bit of a stressful one though! Glad you and your vehicle made it out.
Thank you massively for the support!! Was abit stressful indeed but glad we got out 😂
Great video, enjoy the offroading without the $200,000 truck and 20 sponsors that you have to keep thanking. Keep it real and enjoy the journey. Almost needed some muddies for that trip!
Thank you heaps for the support!! And yeah definitely agree! we like to watch others with realistic builds as well haha. Muddies would be nice, and definitely wouldve helped a little more!
Never seen a short cut that was ever short in the bush 😂 Great video guys.
Hahaa literally, and we found out the hard way 🤣 thank you!!
Man that was insane
Haha yeah was a fun trip!
Why would you leave your tyres at 40 psi when bogged on the beach? Why do you drive on sand at 40 psi?
Well that's exactly right! We have driven many times on many beaches with 40psi and always been fine and when bogged always let them down. Majority of times though we let the tyres down! Fraser, Moreton, Straddy, we always had tyres down ect! However, this was just a 1 night stay so it was just pure laziness, and when we got bogged, we were in more on a panic mode and just didn't think about it and straight away thought to go for the winch, which we should've 100% let the tyres down straight away which is what we normally do haha but hey it's all a lesson
Amazing vid guys. Everyone makes mistakes and I understand your panic with the rising tide. But hey, now you have experience with your winch, that'll be handy in the Cape. Cheers and have fun.
Thank you so much!! And yeah indeed, best thing we can do is learn from it! And that's very true, it's all experience!!

Totally agree! You guys did so well getting out of that.
@@oz-wozza thank you heaps!!
Good training video for my son, everything you did wrong he learnt fron, definitely lower your tyre pressures on sand dont spin your wheels so hard you ownly bury yourself and never take a car on t he beach with a overheating problem, its probably your thermostat not opening or that model always had a turbo problem. But hey ar least we got a laugh😂
Thats exactly right and glad you both got a good laugh out of it 🤣. It’s definitely more a big learning lesson! And definitely good for even us to look back on and learn for next time! And yeah it wasn't the smartest idea to go beach driving with overheating issues haha but hey we knew what we were getting into I guess 😂
40 psi 😳 15 psi would of been a world of difference 😂
Hahaha yeah literally 🤣 bloody rookie error 🤣
Another great vid guys getting better with every one. Keep it up
Thank you heaps, we truly appreciate the support!!
Hey guys great content, nice setup. Hope you sort your overheating problem. Could be a lazy warn thermostat. One thing, please stop using aluminium foil for cooking, or anything to do with food and it leaks into your food and causes all sorts of problems, like dementia, cancer along with a lot if other problems, you should also stop using Teflon coated anything for cooking too, causes same problems. Pretty easy to research. Just sharing cause alot of people aren't aware. Stay safe and enjoy life.
Thank you for the feed back!! And yeah over heating is now sorted thank fully, I believe just internally blocked radiator as thermo and water pump was fine after pulling them out haha! And as for the foil and Teflon, we never knew about that! We'll definitely look into it and do so research! Thank you for letting us know as we'd never think it!!
Great video… thanks guys! Really nicely paced, heaps of info, very inspiring.
