Climbing Vlog - Kate's Back - Climbing Hanger - I nearly died.

In this VLOG #13 our friend Kate is back for a trip from Africa, where she is now living for a couple of years. We went through to @theclimbinghangaruk in Edinbrugh and we had some fun. I filmed loads, but cut it down to these climbs, including some comparison videos between tall people and a shorty. I also tried my hardest, crimpiest climb, and fell quite badly for me. Climbing Technique for Beginners - the barndoor and how to stop it.
I have been climbing 30+ years. I regularly see people start bouldering, seem super keen, then disappear. The more focused they are on grades and fast improvement, the less likely they are to stay for the long haul. I saw the same thing when I did judo/ jiu jitsu. If newcomers asked how long it takes to get a black belt in their first class, you know they would be gone a few weeks later. If they said 'I don't know if I can do this' you knew they were probably in for the long haul.
Oh, totally. We have a group that has newcomers every week, and find the same thing.
The grades and comparison one, for me, are some of the most important. I've boulderer for around 17yrs now, and the AMOUNT of people I've seen be defeated, lose friends, become quite toxic, due to grades and comparison, is crazy. Grades are unbelievably subjective. They give you a nice ball park, but every gym is different and then converting to outside is humbling too. Solid advice, for sure. I think one I'd add is, it's not all about 'strength' (again, something I've heard many times) - really iron in on technique!
Yeh, it's so common for folk to get obsessed with grade. And man, you're right about outside grades :) And re stregnth, so many woman climbers, who may not be as strong as some of the males they climb with, out-climb them with flexibility and technique every time. Thanks for the comment.
@@fatoldclimber no problem, great video (came here from Instagram, so the advertising is working) Yeah, I've honestly always thought an strong technical climber could beat a 'strong' climber... I had an injury years ago that required me to massively focus on technique and mate, what a game changer!
@@DannyB_92 Yeh, I've really had to focus on technique to combat my weight :) Plus when I started climbing I mainly climbed with people who are technically very good
@@fatoldclimber awesome! That mixes in when you mentioned climb with people. It's OK to climb alone, obviously. But at very least, watch people. Ask questions if you feel brave enough to (I can appreciate how intimidating it may be), but I've found 90% of people tend to be approachable in a centre.
@@DannyB_92yeh. Mainly advice for new people. I think once you know what you’re doing, climbing on your own isn’t as big a problem :)
Great tips!
Thank you
Thanks for all these tips once again Gordon! Especially the ‘do’ where it has to be fun. I been having fun bouldering since I started. I remember starting last June and run into you YT account and subscribing it right away. Your tips have been very quite handy for me ever since (and also mentally, with the tip on Atomic Habits - it’s doing quite a lot for me!). 🙌
That’s great to hear, thanks.

Very good list. Definitely agree with don't do too much. Been climbing just over a year now and biggest set-back I had was when I got over-enthusiastic about my newly-found activity and went climbing too often before I was ready for it. Finger, shoulder and elbow strains/injuries kept me away from it and watching other people climb for weeks without being able to get on the wall. Climbing once or twice a week is far better than throwing yourself at it every day/every other day until your body tells you unequivocally to stop and being stuck climbing nothing As an add-on to that, I'd suggest learning a good warm-up routine to reduce the risk of injury. I've not been involved in other sports with similar physical demands before this - so learning to take the time to prepare better is worth it for keeping you climbing more
Oh no. Sorry to hear that. It seems to be quite common for people new to the sport. Regarding warmups, it’s an interesting one. I’ve never really bothered with warm ups (pre-climbing ones anyway). What I do instead is slowly warm up on the wall. I really take my time, climbing the easiest routes, doing footwork drills and stretching out my shoulders and legs as I do them. But a lot of people could do with warming up (on or off the wall) before trying hard for sure.
I'm much more careful now, and pay more attention to those warning-sign aches more clearly; so it's not been a problem for a while now. Eg. got one hand-match away from topping my first grade 6 the night you were filming, but after putting a lot into that one this week I'm feeling the strain in my shoulders and elbows so probably taking some extra time off next week. But early on, I wasn't considering warming up the fingers I'd be using the whole time to climb every boulder and didn't have the experience to recognise what's just tiredness and what's a warning of strain.
Those on-the-wall warm-ups are a great time to work on your Do of learning technique. If you're working up those easy climbs to build up your muscles to get ready anyway, why not double up the usefulness of that time by finding drills and games to play around with to improve those skills before you hit the harder climbs where they need to be spot on? If climbing with other people a bit of light competition can be fun - my daughter tends to enjoy the chance to get one over on her dad in those games.
@@johnkirkland7393 Grade 6 at HO is great. I’m struggling to get a 4 😂
@@fatoldclimber It just got the better of me, and it'll be gone by the next time I'm down, so close but no cigar this time. Normally I can't even get started on them, but this one seemed to click, so was worth working on when I got so close. 4s and 5s are typically my limit but I've been doing pretty well recently. I've also been doing better recently at not getting too hung up on seeing that binary send/not send as a measure of progress or what I find satisfaction in. I could choose to be frustrated that I failed in getting that first climb at that grade ticked - but to have gotten so close is a massive boost in my confidence at my progress. I'll choose to use that as encouragement to have a go and try those climbs I'd probably walk past a month or two ago as being way past my level
Sorry about the in-shot walkthrough. Didn't realise you were filming - or I'd have smiled at least 😊
Haha, don’t be daft. It’s not my climbing centre. :)
nice video, hope your legs are okay. Was funny to see myself in the background of a couple of shots!
Haha, thanks. Took a few days but legs were ok. :)
Thanks for this vid. Seems like a great bunch of people you climb with. I got very invested in all your climbs. No better way to spend a Sunday. It's a sub from me.
Thanks. It is indeed a great bunch of folks to climb - and not climb - with. Thanks for the sub
I'd be nervous of a drone in operation at a climbing centre, and I wouldn't be surprised if you get refused by centres, maybe for insurance reasons. However, the evidence of your video seems to suggest that it's fairly safe as long as you have the consent of those being filmed (in advance) and the operator is sufficiently skilled. I have a theory that the reason there are so many bouldering videos and relatively few of rope climbing is because it's much harder to film a rope climb throughout the whole route. Maybe this is a way to redress the imbalance!
Yeh, there were only half a dozen folk there and I asked them all before hand. Plus, this thing is tiny and the props are guarded. My actual plan is this is something I would do 'for' the climbing centre, and when it is clsoed (other than staff and folk involved). And I agree about he rope climbing. This little drone could follow someone all the way up a route. Only has about 15 mins of flight time, so that might be a factor though.
the big guys know that fall wasnt funny but if you put in perspective, what you do Gordon is really impressive. I dont think i could that myselft haha. I know your goals are about that but it needs to be said. Nice video, that group seems really nice to hangout and climb :)
Thanks. And you're right. The people I climb with think nothing of coming off from the top. I avoid it at all costs - normally :)
If you think there is a risk of serious injury from falling you should NOT climb. If your body can't take the fall from that height then don't climb that high. There is always a chance that you fall. I would even say falling is a requirement. The fun about climbing is that if you fall it doesn't matter.
While I agree with the logic of your point, there’s always a risk of serious injury, regardless of size. That’s why the climbing centres make you sign a waiver. The worst injury I know of in my circle of friends was a broken ankle (bone sticking out side of leg) and that person is not over weigh. So, for me, it’s about being mindful of the risks and taking care.
I hope you didn’t get injured too badly and have recovered from that fall. Seeing you fall and lay there a bit was a bit scary, but glad you were able to get a few more climbs out. You’ll conquer that climb next time! You got it!! Welcome back Kate. Loved the perseverance y’all had with each climb !

I made plans a few weeks ago to go with someone who climbs frequently from my work and am meeting with him in an hour to go to his local climbing gym. Good work, Gordon! 👏 Using more momentum is something I'm trying to work on more too (although in my case it's more to do with having big legs and short arms and struggling to reach holds!). I'm naturally very static, but I'm getting more comfortable with a bit more dynamism now - always good to keep expanding the toolkit. 👍
Thanks. And yup, got to keep expanding the toolkit
Really enjoyed climbing with y'all last Wed! So on the subject of drones - many people have a knee-jerk reaction against them. I feel that if I enjoy watching drone footage I shouldn't object to them being used, as long as it's done with sensitivity, and as you say, you got permission from everyone in the centre to film before going ahead. Unlike a recent experience at The Cobbler, where me and some friends had a drone buzzing right above our heads for about 15 minutes as we headed up to do a summit camp one evening. That's just an invasion of privacy and we should have shot it down! 😆 I think if drones are properly managed they can be brilliant. I watch a lot of scrambling videos and I hate that distorted "fish-eye lens" effect. Drones can give a much more accurate view of a climb or a scramble.
Yeh, it was good to see you at TCA. Hopefully you’ll join us more. I like drones. I do think, as you say, there is a lot of misuse of them. If I’m flying, and I see people, I tend to steer clear of them (unless they’re involved in what’s being filmed).
So cool!
