Fantastic!! Used to go see Captain Matchbox play when I was 15/16. Loved them big❤❤❤❤❤
What yr did this come out pls Pete?
hello Stephen, it was filmed in the early 70's + I posted it some 20 or so years later
Thnx.😂
@@pivid08loved Captain Matchbox.
Fantastic talent
Aww, what great stuff! Had skipped my mind for way too long
Hubbard was in a hurry? 😉
Just brillant. I keep expecting Tiny Tim to pop up 😊
OMG one of my favourite albums - so pleased to see the videos - thanks to whoever out them up love love!
I played this for my daughter. She said " racist".
yes, a white-fella pre-war take on the Japanese city, but a fairly benign word-salad
😆👏👏👏👏👏😆
Got the l.p.
hippies
Revisiting them, & still in awe of their talents. The best!
That's great, the seventies, I don't think we ca get back there now........
Absolutely fantastic !!!
Wonderful song and rendition of it
it was a novelty song from a novelty interlude of a novelty band
Saw them often in my uni days. They were great but I didn't appreciate how great when I was a young man.
The iconic Aussie band. No one else was as funny and talented.
I never knew about these guys 50 years ago. I’m mad at somebody. Probably American radio. There was a lot of good stuff that we never got a whiff of.
Very cool style !!
Does anyone understand the lyrics for the first two verses? I can make out some of the words but have no idea what he's singing.
1. "If you see old Joe...", 2. "Let's have a party..." as per the original. go with the flow
@@pivid08 Thanks for that. it was really bugging me!
Love them. Shame about the terrible mix.
?, bit muddy but sounds alright to me - can hear all instruments clearly
Takes me back ❤
Love it!!
A crazy part of my youth I never forgot. On the end of a spear I will hold you so near
Who WAS the singer?
he is still David Hubbard
All those koalas squeezed to death.
?
Great
Very entertaining - a kind of hippy take on an Al Bowlly classic - none the worse for that -
Yeeeeees .
...I remember when they played at a lunch time concert at the SA School of Art quandrangle at the Stanley Street North Adelaide campus in 1976... always great music still play it today... great to see this clip...
Saw the band once, Coolum Beach Hotel '79. " thru the cobwebs of time, I recall fun in my prime."
It's like he is singing in a different language
This is unironically my one of my favorite songs, but it's not on Spotify so I don't know what to do!?!
you could try buying the actual records - it was our 2nd single + is also on the Smoke Dreams LP + possibly some of the compilation cds
These people are crazy and wonderful and superb!
I have loved this song since 1970 its just fun makes me smile
Just great. An early seventies cover of a 1931 song. Now it's 50 years since Captain Matchbox did it.
Wow 😮
I love them, they were fantastic, especially Mic - he was completely unique and gorgeous.
still are
@@pivid08 Yes, you are very right! It's just that I knew them when I was in my twenties, and I'm now 70, and haven't seen them since then.
@@7ItsAnIncredibleJourney7 still are individually, although Jimmy Niven has left the planet
So Good! My brother bought this album for our mum, I loved it as a kid, it often comes back to memory, so glad to have found it. Now looking for more of their music. I've been trying to find - A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square
released a number of records, some repackaged as CDs. This one a single, then on Smoke Dreams. Never did A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square, but I like it - sang it to my Grandma once but she didn't recognise it - keep searching; it's out there somewhere
@@pivid08 Thanks for the reply Peter. I ended up finding A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, it was done by The New Vaudeville Band who also did "Winchester Cathedral". look them up, if you like CMWB, you'll love these guys.
@@Geblues10 quite a few people have had a go at this, including a reasonable shot from Rod Stewart. I got it from the sheet music before hearing it
@@pivid08 Yes, so many people have done it, but it was the version by The New Vaudeville Band that I fondly remembered. Did you listen to their version?
@@Geblues10 yep, also Vera Lynn+

Mic Conway- thankyou
Moose where are you! we loved this especially the ending Aaarh... DAC 1975 .. . Spot
Mic Conway must have taken over the singing when that guy left.
Mic was always the main singer, this was one of a few songs that Dave did. Dave + I left some time later
@@pivid08 he should have done more singing. Lovely voice.
yes, we went on to do a duo (2nd Hand Love) for a while, + he has continued his mellifluousness still
Dobre, Pozdrowienia z Polski.
?, my Polish not too good
Hi Peter, good to see you are still playing as am I. Sorry to hear about Peter Starkey. Ian Forrest alias arthurcrime on sound cloud.
good to hear from you. you may not know that I buggered up some of your recordings + got Peter Starkie to re-do the leads. Dog Squad one of my faves.
That guy with the fruits is everything 😩
I remember this song as a kid but they're way too weird for my taste.
Did the band ever come to New Zealand ? I have the album bought it in the '70s...so great.
closest we got was Tasmania when I was with them. later versions may have got to nz
@@pivid08 are you in this video ? Playing what ? Were you on the album ? It's in storage, must look it out !
me on Smoke Dreams album + here, you'll also find me on the cover when you dig it out
@@pivid08 Who’s playing Mandolin? Looks like Colin Stevens, but no proper front view?
@@bernadettelanders7306 that's Mick Fleming, one of the greats, + original member, eventually replaced by Colin
Just discovered you guys after listening to Clarence Williams on here and this was suggested. So glad I clicked. Instant fell in love and downloaded Smoke Dreams and Wangaratta Wahine. Fantastic albums and will be in my daily playlists from now on
Smoke Dreams is one of my all time favourite albums. Glad you've jumped on the Matchbox :)
@@Mirrorgirl492 you can add Australia and Slightly Troppo to list now to!
when it started, I thought it was Flamin' May. Has quite a few similar sounding parts to it.
