Sydney N Scale Model Railway Club has been helping N scale modellers for over 50 years.
The club was formed to foster the interests of the hobby in general and in N scale modelling in particular. We are open to anyone interested in N scale modelling of any prototype and era.
The club has a large permanent layout, named the Cascade Union Railway, as well as a number of portable layouts that are used for exhibition purposes. All layouts operate using the Digitrax DCC system.
The club is based in the Sydney suburb of Rockdale.

February 1, 2025 Running Day
The Cascade Union Railway had a very light load today. Very few members in attendance, and, at one stage, more members were working on various projects than were actually running trains.
Still, we did manage to capture those trains that were running.

Australia Day Weekend 2025 Running Days

Australia Day was on Sunday 26th, so we got Monday as a holiday, meaning that we had running on both Saturday and Monday. Our last Running day for 2024. A good turnup of members and lots of trains running over the Cascade Union Railway. This time, almost all the trains were North American (only a couple of British and one Japanese train seen). The only Australian trains running were running on our Widgeree layout. At the start of the day, our British modellers were almost the only members running trains on the Cascade Union Railway. However, the American modellers slowly built up their numbers. On the Cascade Union Railway, our new main station, the Spokane Union Station, has finally opened for operation. What a day. Lots of trains running over the Cascade Union Railway today, but was only able to catch some of them. A real mix of freight and passenger, as well as a mix of prototypes with trains from Australia, Japan, Britain and Italy, and, of course, North America. Today's running on the Cascade Union Railway started with a couple of steam powered trains, but these were soon replaced with some Japanese high speed trains. All of the backdrops look so realistic. Well done to those who contributed to the making of all these layouts.
Yes, our backdrop painter is a very good artist and we are lucky to have him as a member. All these shots are of a single layout - it fills two rooms with a total area of 12.5m x 7m. The layout is currently a double deck layout and we are now building the third deck.
Lot's of variety on this layout, must be fun to operate on! Thanks for sharing!
The layout is currently two levels, pretty well fully scenicked (with, at least, basic scenery done), with approximately 44 scale kilometres of double track main line. So lots of fun for those running trains, and now, with the main yard completed, we can really get into operations. We plan to run a joint running/operations session in a couple of weeks time.

Layout looks good ~ video played better without the sound but it probably did dub out any unrealistic sound locomotives!
Very few sound locos running in this session, plus we have a couple of ex-engine drivers who cannot speak quietly even if they tried.

Pat, you need to talk to the owner of the CP units as to why he felt that he needed 9 units, although it could be because they were mainly 4 axle units. For the benefit of non-club viewers, Pat was part of the team that held the previous record.

Wow, are all locos powered as DCC consist or some dummies? I can't even get 2 locos to consist smoothly.
Yes, all the locos are powered. The 3 UP locos are all Kato and were pretty well speed matched out of the box. The CP locos have all been speed matched. We actually had the CP locos under one control and the UP locos under a separate control with the two engineers coordinating to ensure they were matching on speed.
Awesome layout. The scenery is great. A Driver's Cab View Video would be great! How many operators does the layout cater for on the main line?
Thanks. We have had up to 11 trains running on the mainline, and still had room for more. We need to find someone who has a suitable camera for a driver's cab view. Would love to do one, but need to get the camera.
