Offgrid for 15 years and counting and looking to share some of our knowledge and fun!!
it isn't the mountains ahead that wear you out; it's the pebble in your shoe. Come on over watch us attempt to remove the pebbles from our proverbial shoes and have fun doing it..from off grid projects, gardening, improving the land and much more.
We are a couple who decided to make a change to the way we were doing things. We sold our house and bought a small cabin with 3 acres, fixed it up and have been off grid homesteading while we have been learning and building, gardening and landscaping things for 15 years. It’s a work in progress and we thought we would attempt to inform/entertain those who are interested in our projects (and other random thoughts) in the hopes of giving back to other users the way that many blogs and sites that have aided us along the way.
Don’t expect too much in the way of philosophy or anything overly serious. This is the lighter side of going off grid!

Why can't you hang the garlic in a lake?
We use a 55 gal blue plastic drum (open-top with the airtight ring clamp (as opposed to the closed top version with just the bungs)). Bigger, cheaper, and sturdier than most trash cans. We don't worry about air circulation/ventilation. They are completely and fully sealed off from the outside air. They get quite enough air turnover goin' out there every 4 or 5 days, rummaging through the contents to bring some into the house. Potatoes store without sprouting well into March/April. Room temperature potatoes stored in the cool basement start sprouting in mid to late Dec. We gain about 4 months storage by storing in Ma Nature's coldroom out there.
almost saw a rocky mountain lake.
Was the garlic sick? Put it in the lake!
I can’t wait to eat the garlic too yum
How did someone beat me to the first comment? They must have come from a nearby lake.
No cap I thought I had it bad 😂, these might be one of the worst things on earth
Terrible things! Good luck!
Needs more lake.
I just saw a Lake. I will try to incorporate all of your feedback!
We are 3 months with our first potcake. With another in the plans. Dawson looks similar to your dog. And similar story with the timid behavior turning to this comfortable love. Just loves to be around. Thanks for sharing.
Artemis has been great. 3 years last month. Not nearly as timid these days but still has her moments. She is a very different dog confidence wise.good luck and thanks for stopping in!
🎯 Key points for quick navigation: 00:00 *🎩 The hat, adorned with dead deer flies, is described as a "work of art."* 00:15 *🔵 The creator feels optimistic about catching many deer flies with the blue cup hat.* 00:32 *🧢 The hat is a modified ball cap with a blue solo cup attached using threads.* 00:47 *🌑 Deer flies are attracted to shadows and dark colors, especially blue.* 00:59 *🪤 Tanglefoot, a sticky substance used in gardening, is applied to the cup to trap deer flies.* 01:13 *🕸️ The blue color attracts the deer flies, and Tanglefoot makes them stick.* 01:28 *✂️ To avoid cutting the cup off each time it's full, only a small amount of Tanglefoot is used inside.* 01:42 *↩️ Tanglefoot is smeared around the edges of the cup since flies usually come from behind.* 02:08 *🆕 A fresh blue cup is ready, and it attracts the first deer fly in less than 30 seconds.* 03:13 *🏞️ The hat clears out deer flies for a couple of weeks, making it useful when cutting grass or hiking.* 03:38 *🌲 In thick woods, the hat is a necessity to protect against deer flies, much like wearing a veil for black flies.* 04:21 *🪓 The hat catches all the deer flies, allowing one person to wear it and keep others free from flies.* 04:35 *💡 Using Tanglefoot and a blue solo cup sewn onto a hat is an effective, inexpensive way to catch and kill deer flies.* Made with HARPA AI
Thanks! Succinct!
These beetles are the worst!
Tis true. I really hate em.
You rhymed the world in 80 days!
For real!
Beetles can't swim in a lake.
I made a mini lake to put them in. They hated it and after an hour of the backstroke they gave up!
That glue doesn't leak down into your hair?
Not as long as you don't put too much on. The video ask suggests some paper towel just in case. Less is more..start with a smaller amount!
Stake on the lake! Surfin' USA!
Show me your lake! Tomatoes meet stake. Stake this is tomatoes...and lake!
My bro!!!!!!!
You love free Trees too! Sweet!
Need to clone the lake!
..cloning in 456273829384 minutes. Hold on! 456273829383!
I really appreciate this video. We're trying to learn permaculture skills. :-)
Glad to help! Just finishing up the video where I make a larger hugelcultur bed so stay tuned!
views rolling in. Imagine if there was a lake? You'd have 1000 views.
Dare to dream! The deer fly hat video is the current video TH-cam is throwing me a bone with..but I think there is a lake in the video!
Why are you wearing thick socks in summer?
Blister prevention. They were probably already dirty. Was was hiking yesterday in hit weather with merino socks on too!
Wow! Making soil in 5 years!!! Very inventive! Do you till the soil while wearing your Tilley hat?
Too valuable to use for gardening! It is in my 10 year plan though!
Hügelkultur lake?
I dug down far enough that I actually created a lake where the bed was. If we had a time machine we could see it..and the dinosaurs!
Clone the lake!
Hehe. I actually started a mini lake and filled it with twigs. Next time!
Shout out to the montréal expos hat 👌
..loved those guys but Montreal loves the Habs too much to support the Expos. Too bad..they were my NL team!
@@EGBeav why ruin the chapeau??? you must have had other old hats. it's a classic.
@leanercleaner698 freebie in Coors light 30 packs. I have other Expos hats! Real ones!
Potcakes need more love
They do! Artemis has been so great we can't imagine things without her!
@@EGBeav finally someone agrees with me and I have a potcake he is a baby his name is outo ❤
@Robloxdragoncrew925 Great pups. Artemis has mostly free space to run..and is finally staying in the yard area after 3 years so I am pumped! We love her very much and her name fits her personality! Thanks for stopping by!
Any idea why most people use metal cans instead of plastic? What state are you in?
Perhaps for different critters. We are in Canada and not as much underground critters here as in other parts of the continent. I find that metal let's leaks in when I use them for garbage or whatever. Plastic is water tight. Only reason I could think of. It works great for us here. Zone 6 basically.
Thanks for the response! We are in 6 or 7 I guess. I have two metal and two plastic. I’m trying to decide if I want to try both types or just one. I got them cheap so not a huge deal one way or another. Do you find the one can is plenty of space? I was thinking maybe we would separate the veggies etc by can but then they would be less full
@@EGBeav I watched three of yours on these. Good work. I’m curious if you know anything about putting in a vent? I notice some people do but most don’t? Maybe that is a warmer weather thing? To let the hot air out
@aaron647 depends on how much veggies you have but if you have lots of veggies and not enough space it is worth trying. The principles are sound and while we have not tried other veggies I would like to know too. Good luck either way!
Droney!! SWeet. Need some shots in the lake.
Hehe..lakes abound! Trying to get the content the public wants! Besides no content which peeps strongly prefer!
I’ve seen other videos where they say your potatoes should not be touching. Have you found that that is an issue?
The shavings do a pretty good job of preventing them from touching too much. In my recent potato planting video I hauled out the taters and there was some moisture on top but the spuds were all good. The wood shavings will absorb some moisture too. Curing the taters helps with both touching and.excess moisture ( so you don't need a vent a much). Thanks and good luck!
Not an issue for us. We dont even use a mulch/chips/straw. They're packaged in 10-pounder mesh bags (super easy to just pull the top bag up outa there once a week to haul into the kitchen. )
Those tulips look amazing! Spud-tacular !
More long scenes with nothing going on but flowers and work. Lake! I mean taters!
I love potatoes! Lake has yet to make an appearance.
The whole production is now a lake. With 200% more Lake flavor!
I see a lot of videos on internet using galvanized trash can and most people put holes in the bottum and a vent on the top. Do I understand correctly that you use a PLASTIC trashcan, no holes and no vent?
Correct. I did have some moisture at the top of the shavings due to no vent but no potatoes had issues. Been running for 4 years with almost no loss of potatoes. One of my recent videos shows me removing the potatoes and the level of moisture present. Minimal. I did cute the potatoes before storing to help remove water so that might be helping things out.
GO POTATO 🥔!!! 😅 I know what that potato is memorable.
Reminds me of that grade 7 dance where I had not hit puberty and had size concerns. My dad told me to stuff a potato down my pants to compensate. Wish I had of stuffed it down the front and not the rear of my pants!
Wouldn't they grow better in the lake? Or maybe the shore? Great video mosquito man. Surfin' USA!!!
I tried the lake shore last year but I did not own the land and my neighbors got mad when their dock could not be reached due to potato vegetation was so abundant. Jerks. They love potatoes which is the odd thing! Lake.
Very good video
Thanks! Hope you make one and it works out for you! We love it!
Why can't you incorporate a lake into the garden? Would be better in a lake.
I do have an area planned for a small lake! No diving.
You're back! Needed to put the bees in the lake.
One of the hives went to the lake.. hopefully they come back!
You have returned! I feared you'd been lost in the lake!
I was lost. I still am and see lakes everywhere. People demand horrible content and I must comply!!
Very ingenious!😊
Why not use Duck Tape?
You could have actually done this one in a lake! Missed opportunity.
That would have been a good idea. Maybe for the canoe test..coming 2025? Probably not.
Final Lake?
Very COOL. Will bears dig something like this up ?
We have had bears in the area but never an issue with any animals in 3 years. I am not sure bears would even eat a pile of potatoes but I guess it depends on how hungry they were.
@@EGBeav TY for replying. I only ask as I was thinking about makin similar project for an ice chest with ice blokes for a small refrigerator replacement to save on electric bill.
What model is it?
I am using StealthCam. There are many models which will work but the black light is the important feature. Good luck!
It would appear you planted a YEARS WORTH OF GARLUC😊
So smart.. I used those for laundry.. o my goodness thank u such a goodidea❤
Glad you like it! Very useful! Thanks for stopping by!
You live the good life, miss ❤
Love it out here! Once the garden soil improves a little more we will have a full great garden!
Guess you have very few Vampire bats there!😮
No bite marks on my neck!!
I think your needle is stuck.😮 😢
I have a potcake from Anguilla I adopted five months ago who I love like crazy, but she's afraid of loud noises and other people. She's WONDERFULLY silly with me--she just stole my shoe as I was sitting here--and loves to play with other dogs...but she's so fearful, nobody in my life gets to see what a blessing she is. She's multicolored, but the shape of her head looks just like Artemis. They are SO cute!!!
Artemis was really shy but has come out of her shell..a dog buddy really helped..plus slowly introducing her to new situations. Your pup sounds great and it can take a while but keep at it! Patience and love but keep pushing her to try new things and things she is afraid of!
..oh and here they are from more recent: th-cam.com/video/gfxCyWaMou8/w-d-xo.html In case you did not see it. Thanks!
Nice to see you again! Congrats on the dogs.
Yay. Gone but not forgotten! Or forgotten but not gone! Lake.
