BREED | Review of a forgotten "Halo killer"
Another game from a forgotten pile of CDs in the back of a drawer. This time we're taking a look at BREED the video game, released in 2004. Let's see if this is just another Halo clone or perhaps something more.
If you want to give the game a try, there's a copy floating around on Abandonware.

Star Wars Dark Forces Review

Never heard of this game. Seems like it had some interesting ideas but the final version didn't live up to the developers ambitions.
For some reason i thought this game was just American Conquest and i just thought i misrememberd the name. Anyways as per usual i always appreciate people talking about these obscure RTS games. There is a lot of them still need talking about. And it even has a bit of that Empire Earth campaign principles of some of the overacting voice actors haha. Also having everything explode despite it not making any sense, just reminds me of the Goldeneye on the N64 where also everything exploded when you destroyed them
And there are many more to come, next video is going to be another RTS!
As someone who played a lot of alpha and beta versions of the game i gotta say it had a lot of wasted potential. The finished game is patched together from levels of different versions (often from different story drafts too) and you can pretty much notice a sharp transition in writing style at two spots in the released version. Some systems were made functional but never shipped as part of the release like being able to load vehicle into the dropship to have it carry it into a mission(before ofc) or between zones , choosing squad composition and different subvariants for GRUNTs and specialists. The release version of some early missions were also more linear then early ones as there was a rush to just finish and ship em out. The ship was also to be a hub of sorts between missions that you could go around and explore with various functions.
Sad we never got to see its full potential. It's still fun to replay from time to time, but it could have been so much more.
This is one of those odd games I picked up back when since I didn't really have any context about games and wasn't smart enough to figure out quality, strange part is basically how much of the data is just plain text which meant my young self could mess about with it quite significantly. Also the one thing that really makes the flying bad is the fact that the fighter actually loses engine power as it's health decreases, I'm not sure if other vehicles suffer this but somehow I managed to get to the last mission before giving up. Also if I recall right there's a shocking amount of pictures of topless women in the files, seems you could get away with an awful lot back then.
My God, how did you get this game to run? In my case, I get error that states "Scripting: out of vehicle def space”. Despite all the problems, I really want to relive my childhood memories associated with the game...
Wow, I was beginning to think I was the only person who remembered this game. I played it a lot when I was a child. I'll always appreciate how much variety the missions of this game had.
Sweet video brother
Though unlike the rest of the commenters I was too young to comprehend a controller when it came out. Still bloody interesting in retrospect though
It's fun looking back with adult eyes and more experience at these games we enjoyed as kids, expect many more nostalgia pieces to come!
Holy shit remember playing the demo of this this ages ago, could never remember the name. Thanks for the memory
this is one of those games that i played when it was new, you forget it exists, you remember it exists every 1-3 years, you look it up and get transported back to 2004 and then you forget it exists all over again.
Exactly! But it's always nice to go back and revisit some of these older titles.
This game, Project Snowblind, and Pariah are the trinity of games I forget, but have weird flashbacks to when people mention them
@@TheSimpleMan454 I swear I played Snowblind but could never place a name to the memory. Thanks for reminding me!
Ok, heres my experience with this game in America. I read in a magazine that this game had co op, at the time, I was starved for co-op, so I pre ordered, brought it home, installed it. No co op. I looked at the back of the box for how many players to see a sticker saying "single player campaign" or something to that effect. I peeled off the sticker and I shit you not it had 1 to either 3 or 4 player co op underneath. They cut the co op after review copies went out. Ok whatever is it a good game I thought? Well I load the tutorial and tried running over an enemy with a tank. Nothing, it lived. Uninstalled and got very grumpy.
Considering how the game ended up launching I bet they had a lot of issues with the coop campaign. It was ambitious for the time, imagine how cool it would have been to go through it with friends. A missed opportunity.
I remember being mindblown by this game. In hindsight I think a good isometirc 2d graphic style like Stronghold, Anno 1503, Cossacks 2 and ofc Age of Empires 2 have aged better overall. And just a very short time later 3d graphics like this was way surpassed by games like Age of Empires 3. Things moved fast in the early 2000s. But for a time I thought to myself that this surely was the peak of graphics in strategy games and that it could barely ever look more realistic than this. Also I got black bars flickering over the screen when playing because the GPU wasn't up to the task:P I still remember the soundtrack and despite being dated this game still does something so right, which many modern games somehow struggle with. Atmosphere!
It really had a great atmosphere, especially the native american levels. I plan to cover a game (hopefully soon) that features that exact isometric pre-rendered style you mentioned that I believe looks gorgeous even today Love the captain Claw pfp!
This game's graphic design reminds me of Empire Earth, and I mean that in the best possible way.
Given the "modern cultural climate", I'm genuinely kind of surprised that nobody's ever tried to re-release this game. Then again, maybe it's for the best - can you imagine the kind of online discourse that this game would generate if it were released today?
Considering the whole colonization, slavery, exploitation of natives and general misogyny, I think they'd get quite the backlash. But it's best viewed as a product of the early 2000s and a historical (not necessarily accurate) view of what was.
@@Aztekhem Yeah, right, that's the annoying discourse characteristic to the current time period. A cartoonish re-telling of American history becomes a second My Struggle when analyzed the right way.
1:19 That's odd. It was the Spanish who wanted to integrate the natives into the colonial system. The English didn't want the natives at all.
In this case I was speaking in the context of the game, that isn't historically accurate. In the Spanish campaign mission where you fight the natives the objective is always to kill them. And the English are the only antagonists who captured natives in the Iroquois campaign/have slaves in the Spanish one.
there is a game called "warrior kings battles" it's an old rts from 2005 or something, but the thing i really loved about it is there's the whole religion tech tree that can change your whole playstyle

Thank you for the kind words! I hope you'll like the next videos as well.
in all my life i could never get this game to run,i REALLY wish gog got its hands on it.
It's tricky, but I'm sure you'll get it working. Get the abandonware copy, run the installer as an admin, start the game in compatibility mode to XP service pack 2 and disable the cutscenes from the engine file if you're stuck on a white screen at startup.
Great game, liked it so much back in a day's
God..I played this damn game when i was a kid, in fact i'm like 100% sure i still have at lest one CD of it still laying around. But like you said, some of the voice lines are still burned into my head, even as i'm nearing 30. "That is not the way, to Santa Minetta" Being one i just CAN'T GET OUT.
Hand over the gold! Yeah the soundtrack/voicelines stick with you.
where is arkantos?
Arkantos is probably fighting the animal demon somewhere.
Bought the CDs like 2 weeks ago but i cant install the game on windows 10...
I haven't had any issues with installation on win 11, did you try running it as admin/compatibility mode to win XP service pack 3?
@Aztekhem nah, i'll try!
I remember seeing screenshots of this game back in the day, but i never found a copy of it. Great video, I liked your style of humour too! Another early 2000s obscure RTS i can recommend is Warrior Kings. It is a janky mess at times, but it has so many great ideas that no other RTS game has tried since. Its campaign is especially interesting, where player choices really matter and can alter the campaign drastically. It is on steam for a buck or so, and I've managed to make it work on my computer (windows 10)
Thanks for the suggestion, added to the growing list of games to cover.
Based
FUEGO!!!
the style of menu's backgrounds i cant decide if its inspired by 'generals' , or by age of mythology hmm , or maby those two big studios rather took inspiration from THIS title!
Haha, 100% they stole it from NML!
@@Aztekhem hehe , not a surrpise though dam i think i did see this title in the ''discount random titles just 1-2 left'' stacks back in the early 2000's , kind of wish i picked up a copy then , as some of these old titles while it can be a fiddle to find fixes being able to install them of PHYSICAL LOCAL storage devices and above all run it alone without any background third party ''store/launch platform'' crap is sooooo much more efficient wich reminds me ,best to cheek if the only TRUE! empire earth game still runs smothly for the scheduled nostalgia game to celebrate another cycle of the earth mother begins! ^^
My best friend worked on this. Mostly programming for wayfinding iirc. Gold rush times in some parts of the German gaming industry. Related Designs had to lay off half their staff just two or so years later (my friend among them), when sales didn`t keep up with production costs. Nevertheless they managed to put out another good and somewhat original RTS after No Man`s Land, called Castle Strike.
It's amazing knowing someone who worked on something you love, I imagine he has a unique perspective on the game considering he worked on it. I've added Castle Strike on the big list of games, I missed it back in the day, but thanks to everyone who mentioned it I'll get another chance to play it.
Hot damn... No Man's Land and Castle Strike were such good games. Damn fun for hours, great ideas and mechanics... Shame that modern Gaming Industrie has become so stall
I played this game so long ago and forgot what it was called, some of the unit sounds have been burned in my head since and driven me absolutely nuts.
I know that feeling, glad you found it in the end!
79 subscribes!? I'm getting in at the ground floor of a great channel, to be sure.
Thank you for the kind words! I hope you'll enjoy the future videos.
Forgotten is right, I lived through that era and played in it and loved RTSes but I don't know if I ever heard of it back in the day.
Childhood.
Speaking of Forgotten RTS, you should do a review on "Armies of Exigo" a game from 2004 thats very similar to Warcraft 3.
Oh that's a good one! On the list it goes.
Feels like this game engine was also game engine for Castle Strike
You might be right, same dev, launched half a year later, extremely similar. I'll add it to the list, thanks!
I actually know and remember No Man's Land quite fondly because of the Amerindian campaigns. I was always very fascinated with Amerindian history and culture since I was a kid. So I played every game with Amerindians that I could find. Very cool. This game BTW is the sequel to America, and it was initially simply titled America II. They had to change the name because of some legal issues though, so they renamed it to No Man's Land before release. I'm surprised you didn't review America first, like before No Man's Land. There's also another cool game called American Conquest which is basically Cossacks II but in the Americas. I'm sure you know it. You should maybe review it too one day. Would be grand.
Glad to hear there are more people who played it! American Conquest is on the list of thing I want to go through, but I totally forgot about America. Thank you so much for the comment, and for reminding me of America, I can't wait to replay it!
I played this game when i was young. Fun times
Just discovered your channel and already binging 😂
There were so many good or at least memorable strategy games in the 90 and 2000 decades. Fond childhood memories
They don't make them like they used to, I've got a few more on the list.
@@Aztekhem underrated no man land more than c and c
I genuinely had no idea this game existed, and I thought I knew about pretty much all the 2000-s era RTS games!
I'm glad you found it, and I hopefully you'll have a fun time playing it!
How missions are there per campaign? As I understand it there are 6 independent campaigns in total?
Yep, 6 campaigns, one for each faction. They all have 5 missions except Spain with 6 (but one of them is extremely short) and the Settlers with only 4.
Shame that many of these older strategy games aren't available on gog.
Yeah... I would have been great to have some community patches or some form of multiplayer. But it's good we can still find it on abandonware, and it's not lost forever. What are some of your favorite older strategy games?
@@Aztekhem Rise of Nations Rise of Legends would be my overall favorite older RTS. For TBS the Heroes of might and magic series. But honestly it's difficult to pick just a few favorites when there are so many amazing strategy games.
@@alexy590 No way! I've had Rise of Legends installed on every single PC I've had. My only problem with that one is how the units aren't as responsive as you'd want them to be. but I swear the game soundtrack and atmosphere is unbeatable.
Great job! I enjoyed this game. Didnt 100% it but enjoyed the play through even as an unskilled player
Thank you! It's such a fun game, I think anymore can enjoy it regardless of skill level. And Iceborne feels like playing the base game for the first time again.
Nice editing. What software do you use to edit?
Thanks! I use the free version of Davinci Resolve
@Aztekhem thanks
I'm going to attempt to finish this feat as well ..have most things. 1535/2000. Essentially all crowns, research, treasures and guild cards. And of that I have about half the crowns just by playing. Shouldn't be TOO bad to finish from where I am.
Sounds like the hardest parts are over, it shouldn't be too long now. I hope you get it!
Geat vid, I'm just starting chapter 2
Nice! I just finished it last night and it was a blast.
another one also trying to tackle worlds achievements before wilds releases unluckily for me though i decided to do both base game and iceborne at once which has been an ordeal grats on getting all the base games done in the video, and hope your wrist doesnt perish over the course of icebourne
Haha thanks! I'm stuck on controller games for a while anyway. And I'm sure you can also get them all until Wilds comes out, what really helped me was making a list so when I'd play I could pick an achievement to work towards in that session. I wish you good crown luck and let me know when you also get that 100%.
im at 82% right now so i am definitely close, and i have also made a list haha hardest part for me is i haven't counted certain things (MR elder dragons, variants) so i kind of just have to hope i will get it on a quest eventually while counting them as i do actively go for the achievement. crowns and research levels are the one im struggling on the most right now so the luck is appreciated haha.
Iceborne next?
You know it! It's going to take a while, but I can't start Wilds until I'm done with Iceborne.
Apart from my 50 achievements, I have 12 secret achievements, how can I get them?
The 12 new achievements are not yet obtainable, if you reveal them they look like ACHIEVEMENT_51_DESCRIPTION. They were implemented for the upcoming Arena of the Gods game mode that will be available on Nov 7th.
Hello, I've logged in this morning and see there are now 12 new hidden achievements. I search the internet and there is nothing about it. I'm playing on steam btw
Hello! I saw them as well, if you reveal them they look like ACHIEVEMENT_51_DESCRIPTION, so I bet they are either some more basegame achievements for the other missions or they are preparing the chinese DLC ones. Either way, we'll cover them in a new video once they are implemented/released.
@@Aztekhem its realeased now its for Arena of The Gods i think its basicaly Skirmish with a flair
I have entered the editor menu and created a game for a militia mission. Although I created many militias and killed many units in the skirmish, it doesn't count.
Are you playing the mission from the editor? You have to save it, exit the editor and play it from the skirmish menu.
I was stuck chipping away at Age Against The Machine (Defeat 100 AI opponents). Playing on the Tiny map is the fastest method, I went Atlantean and rushed with Hero Destroyers. I was unable to do this until I saw your video noting the Bonus to improve my stats and decrease the opponents. Otherwise even on standard the 11 AI build so close that you can't mass Destroyers before they're attacking you.
Exactly! and it takes longer to build up and tear down the bases until they decide to surrender. Sudden death really is perfect for this.
