I think my secret favorite is Lady Gyokuyou who is smart enough to see through most of the stuff going on, and yet is mischevious enough to tease both Jinshi and Maomao about it.

In reality, the harpins have a special meaning. In Ancient china, hairpin was used as love token, and sometimes as a form of engagement (normaly it's the woman who gives the hairpin to the man, which return her the hairpin during the marriage). So in fact, if Lihaku accept the offer of Maomao, they are kind of engaged. That's why the other girls ask about the guy and that's why she can leave the palace to return to her family, it's kind of going to her family with the man, to ask her family for marriage. And that's why Jinshi is so pissed off.
