John Romita Jr. and a Legendary Life in Comics
Today we're turning our spotlight to the legendary comic creator John Romita Jr.
John's dynamic artwork was a staple of Marvel comics for decades, illustrating some of their most beloved heroes such as Spider-Man, Daredevil, X-Men, and Iron Man. In 2008 he co-created the series Kick-Ass, an unconventional take on the superhero genre that really showcased his versatility as an artist and later was adapted into a successful film franchise.
Romita Jr.’s influence is all over modern comics - bold lines, kinetic energy, and unmistakable style, he’s a real storyteller weaving tales that leap off the page and into the hearts of readers worldwide.
So settle in as we explore the life, work, and creative process of the one and only John Romita Jr.
Get ready to be inspired, entertained, and maybe even a little bit awestruck.

This was a good interview! When I started my own first comic, I felt like an imposter coming into this field. But like Sean referenced, I’m decent at art, I THINK I can be a good writer, and I have tons of ideas. Why not I just put the first step in and see where it goes. I’m happy I did. Keep these interviews coming38:17

Wayyyyyyyyyy back in the 90's I went to Comic Con for 4 straight years and met JRJr. I was right out of HS, no formal training and I wanted to draw comics. JR Jr, went out of way to give my scripts and advice. He remembered me the next year and did the same. By the third year he knew me by sight. College and life got in the way, but he hooked me up with the X-men and Spiderman-editors and offered a foot in the door. I'm a graphic designer and photographer as well as an instructor now. If you haven't tried to break into comics, then you have no idea how much time, practice and effort these guys have to do just to get in the door, much less be a success. The time it took was simply to much for me, but I'll always be grateful for guys like JRJr. I'll also give a shout out to Neal Adams & George Perez for doing the same.

Too bad she traces all her reference photos and can't draw backgrounds so the story never feels grounded cuz we dont know where we are . just splashes of color for backgrounds. She learned to draw 3)4 front and profile. The panels where she has no reference stand out like a sore thumb as they say and look flat and awful. She traced photos from and sells them as sketches without crediting the photographer. Google tula lotay tracing and youll see the last of us traces and several others. She re uses panels and zooms in thinking people won't notice. Im not hating but she should credit and learn to draw on her own. Challenge her to draw one page of sequentials on the spot without her knowing the story. She couldn't do it. Just like the con sketchss she'll pull out phone to copy a reference or use one of her memorized head poses. Look at barnstormers and the mess that is. I'll point them out in a video hopefully soon. Flip through any of the work she does there is never any effort to draw a background EVER.

Just wanted to say my favorite comic from Sean is Tokyo Ghost and it was my first introduction to his art. It’d be cool if he did another similar comic not necessarily in the same time period of the far future just another comic with the same tone as that one with action and grittiness to it.

I enjoyed hearing her talk about how much more meaningful comics were when she was growing up and how they were much less easily attainable and thus more meaningful; and also hearing her rattling off all the great artists Sienkiewicz, Paul Smith, Chris Bachalo, Steve Dillon etc. who inspired her. And that Jon J. Muth's OA page hangs in a frame in her bathroom. She's a true lover of comics.
