THE BEAT , a northern soul story
มุมมอง 110K12 ปีที่แล้ว
The Beat A Northern Soul Story This short film looks at the lives and music of five people, who were there at the start of the Northern Soul scene, from the Twisted Wheel to the Wigan Casino and what the music and their memories still mean to them.
Fives McNab Challenge
มุมมอง 54213 ปีที่แล้ว
The Marlborough Town Fives Club made history, on the 27th November 2011, they visited and played at the 3 schools which have their own variant of the game of Fives, Rugby School, Eton College and Winchester College. This tremendous undertaking took 14 hours, over 300 miles, copious Champagne and Beer, smoked salmon bagels, crisps and chocolate. There were thrills, spills, tears and tantrums along...
KTF It will never be over for me!
I was there,I am still there and still playing the tunes next gig this Saturday in Pangbourne......playing some classic rare soul that young black America didn't want back then,we rescued it for you
Happy birthday Leslie 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Just seen the full vid - absolutely fantastic from those who were there at the time - how about an update x
I recently went to my first Northern Soul gig - I’d loved this music since I was in my teens - but being there with the professionals took it to a different level - KTF
'The Beat' by Major Lance was finally released in the UK on Dave Godin's and David Nathan's Soul City label in 1969, which pre-dated the term 'Northern Soul'. In those days it was often called 'Rhythm & Soul' - or just discotheque Soul. The records played then were mostly deleted and obscure UK 45s such as Hoagy Lands 'The Next In Line' (Stateside) etc., which had sold very few and some of which were actually b-sides! US imports were few and far between due to copyright issues. The floodgates really opened after more US-only releases were discovered following easing of import restrictions during the early 1970s.
None of these are old enough to have seen the beginnings of Northern Soul or later. I just missed the Twisted Wheel , went once. Then Pendulum in Mcr. After, went to Wigan Casino early/mid 70's when serving the the Army in West Germany..
😊good friends
A really touching video from a group of passionate soulies. Here's to all of you for keeping the Northern Soul torch burning around the world with a determination to encourage a new generation of fans. It's the music that will never die, KTF.

Many thanks to my childhood friend, Una Hanlon - whom I reconnected with just recently - for telling me about this video. (Una was a devoted Northern Soul fan and is in this video.) Although it was never my scene I admired the enthusiasm of folks who were taking the many frequent trips down from Scotland to those energy packed clubs to dance the night away! And that energy was still apparent when they would talk about their dancing weekend during Monday lunch hour. When I look at the Northern Soul videos, what I love about watching the dancers is the fact you didn't need to wait for a lad to invite you up to dance - you got up and danced whether you had a partner or not - awesome! Happy days for many xxx Loved the video.
No different than any other music scene ! A great time of my youth which should stay there and appreciated?? Sadly i cant think of any other music scene thats become a joke and cringeworthy with oaps dressing like oldest teenager in town ??? I still love n feel the music from my youth as i do other music i liked getting older ... northern soul has now become a laughing stock full of bandwagoners and cringeworthy dancing oaps and alien records
The people dancing are really cool and couldn't care less who is laughing at them. In fact they would welcome it. The guy on the outside laughing at people enjoying themselves is in fact wistful as he has lost the capacity to recapture his youth.
I’ve lived in Denmark for 28 years and still have a dance in the kitchen to the old tunes
at 3.20 drinking all night ? not at the Casino mate . Pop only
I love the dignity and elegance of the way these soul fans describe their feelings and love of their music. It's hard to describe northern soul to someone who hasn't actually seen for themselves but they do it so well. Loads of favourite records... My all time favourite - A little togetherness. The Younghearts 🙂.
Mine too 😊
Live in Australia now may be old but still foolish and very happy thanks to. Northern Soul KTF ✊🍻 It will never be over for me 👏
Fantastic weekend. Very emotional for me seeing Les after almost 40 years! Brilliant job Les!
Guy speaking at 3:55 “I made mates that I still know to this day” know that’s a scene! And his favourite record - “a little togetherness” absolute killer of a track! Good choice mate 👍 tks for sharin ☺️ KEEP THE FAITH!!

Me mam was a soulie in casino early 70's I can remember my earliest memory is I'm around 5 or 6 in 76,77 music playing in the kitchen mum showing me how to dance, loved the music ever since I'm 48 now
all Ex pats ?
Yes
Funny how theyve all fucked off to other countries? JB Beriln xx
Good Bless the brits for keeping this Music alive. They have always been the biggest supporters of Black Music. They knew who the Funk Brothers were before North America did. I first heard about it in Mojo Magazine. I am Canadian and I was stunned at how great the singers were.
I wish they would talk about the ARTISTS for a change!
Good video
I remember coming back after 15 yrs + away & no hearing NS tunes. Was at Drax & the opening bars to "If that's what you wanted" my favourite all time tune came on & I was buzzing again back in the 70's & had to hit the floor.
Awesome video how it used to be and it surely was the good old days nice seeing you Sheila heart and a lot of old friends k.t.f and most of us are still doing it
Thanks Dean, great memories of the Torch and Blackpool Mecca's Highland room recreated in Hong Kong 2012, the scene is still going strong !! KTF xxx
Amazing weekend 😅

The Yum Yums -- A Little Togetherness - such a powerful record
Hi Andrea, looking better than ever!!, so glad I watched vid!, take care, love always!!
Hi to Una, always in the pub with the Southport crowd before we all got the last train to Wigan :) KTF -
Dave C where are you coming from you have brought colour and race into a very good post and it has totally baffled me personally if those artists you have mentioned have been saying derogatory things well then they are just as much bigots as some one out of the klu klux klan I've always looked at this scene as having a level playing field as both black and white artist are listened to by everyone some people don't even know what colour the people are who are singing for instance I'm black from Guyana in South America and one of my favourite artist is Danny Wagner and for years i never knew he was white same can be said about lots of other singers Dave don't take me wrong but you need to let me know what has put you in the frame of mind
Debbie Pryce
Nice one Una! KTF x

A Big "Thank You" goes out to all the people that found this video, watched this video & then found me on Facebook to share their own Northern Soul stories :)

Nice video, brings back memories. Good to see everyone in the film still digging the beat, me to but unfortuately still stuck in the UK! Thanks
great post thanks for taking the time to put it together and sharing with us all regards dave
First heard Supremes when their first record came out, I think it was baby love?, 1962 or 1963, been there ever since at alnighter's all over. Manchester Twisted Wheel, Brazose st. New one in Whitmore street,, Wigan, Derby, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, and at least 4 in London Flamingo and the Discotec in Wardour st the New Scene by the Haymarket.Loved the music loved taking the gear. Magic people, friendly,( not like today everywhere agro)..At 69 still going to soul do's, but leave early cos I'm tired don't dance anymore BUT drift nicely with the sounds, still good company with the young one's KTF.
did you ever go to the last chance saloon in oxford st ? it was going at the same time as " the scene " and la discotheque ? i went to the 4 of them back in the day great times weren't they ? the gear ? brilliant eh ? ha ha
Sheven718 I remember one night at the new scene, "Oh, I'm what you would have called a carrot cruncher them days". From Shropshire. Anyway one night there's a raid by the old bill and everybody through all there pill's on the floor and me and my mates had'nt a clue and started to pick them up and because of our accents they let us go..At that time I worked in the Wimpey Bar in Wardour street as under manager Yes good times and very good dudes,Honnored to be among that set of folks.
Used to get in the la discotheque for free, cos I used to give coffee and wimpy's the guys who worked there. At that time Georgie Fame was resident there, great times...
David Hesbrook did you ever work at the alnight whimpy bar on the corner in oxford st and hanway st ? it was just across the road from the last chance saloon we used to pop over there to take a few more blues , went to the scene and the discotheque but thankfully never got caught up in any raids, very lucky because they were at one time being raided on a regular basis, i still look back on my times "up west" with great fondness, just an impressionable teenager having a very exciting time, brilliant ! just bloody brilliant ! regards dave
David Hesbrook david, can you remember the name of the pub on the corner it was either opposite the flamingo or la discotheque ? i cant remember for the life of me but someone i know asked me and i've been trying to find out, trouble is i wasn't very interested in pubs back then, can you throw any light on it ?
reSuperPeaches58 Suggest you seek the opinions of people like Tommy Hunt.,Bunny Sigler and Brenda Holloway (if you know who they are) who will be appearing for the afore mentioned" white people" in 2014. Alternatively ask Berry Gordy his opinion on" white people" like Dave Godin. Unfortunately you will be unable to ask the late great artiste Jimmy Ruffin and Edwin Starr who chose to live and work with the" White People" in the north of England for the last couple of decades before their death. Unbelievable that in 2013 we are still judging people by the colour of their skin
