Whale tail Carving
Like lots of things I first carved a whales tale as an experiment, to see if I could do it and how it would turn out.
The first one I did like the sapele one at the beginning of the video was easier to carve than the smaller ones. But when I asked people most seemed to prefer the smaller ones at about 40mm across.
I looked on Pinterest for inspiration and pictures of how they looked and some of the details such as how they roll over. There are also different print offs you can down load which I have in a scrap book file that I can look back on. Different species have different shape tails but I don't tend to worry too much about that.
I think its more important how it looks and feels.
Perhaps as I do more of them I will add other details.
They are easy to make. You don't need a band saw to cut them out on, its just quicker for me to do it that way.
In terms of carving them, I have never trained to carve so its all a learning curve, a work in progress, like I said in the video.
You don' need to be an expert. Try to make sure your tools are as sharp as possible, that is half the battle.
If you are struggling with blunt tools you are much more likely to hurt yourself and not get as good a finished product.
Because the tails are only small you sometimes have to be a bit creative how you hold them steady.
Perhaps I will show you what I use another time, in the next video.
I hope you enjoy it, its only a short video. Have a go, they are good fun.

A New Antique Bowl
I have been involved in construction for a long time. One of my favourite kinds of work is refurbishments. I love the history of old building and the unexpected surprises they can throw at you. Over the years I've also seen lots of old timbers go out the door and into the skip. So every now and then I think, "I wonder what I could make from this?" This video is about one of those pieces of scra...
Small bowl turning
This is a bowl I made from some fire wood that I obtained. I think it is laurel, although I stand to be corrected on that. I made two of them but only filmed the one being made. They were intended to be used in the kitchen for wok style meals where you need various ingredients to hand. They are finished in food safe mineral oil. You can use many different woods for this, I happened to have this...
A thin platter and a bit of wobble
Hi Everyone, Its been a very busy month with lots going on and so I have neglected you all a bit. I made this platter a while ago but have only just been able to finish the video and post it. I got this red oak back in early April 2021 when a tree blew over at work. You can see me cut this section of wood off in this earlier video. th-cam.com/video/y5N-zu7P8TY/w-d-xo.html But then the offcut wh...
Not bad for a bit of old stick!
This is a bit overdue. But I have been so busy with some other bits of work that I have been unable to get this out. So this is my first video using a knife to carve the outside shape. The knife was brought for me for Fathers Day this year. My technique maybe leaves a lot to be desire but I was just getting used to it. So please join me and see how this bit of old stick turned out.
Lemon Squeezer made from Yew
My favorite soft drink is made from lemons, limes, apple juice and ginger. But I did not have a lemon squeezer. But I did have a bit of Yew sitting in my shed and so thought I would make two of them to see how they turned out. Follow along and let me know which one you like the best.
A spoon from a bit of broken beech tree 2
This is the second video of my spoon that was made from a bit of beech tree that got smashed when another tree fell down. There are no electrical tools used to make this. Just hand tools. Carving chisels, a spoke shave and clamps. I don't have any training in carving. I have learnt as I have gone along and watching others do things. If I can do it, so can you. What would you like to make?
A spoon from a bit of broken beech tree. Part 1
In a recent visit to a friends place we were able to collect some wood that had come from trees blown over at various times. We collected some oak with some really nice spalting in and a piece of beech which had been snapped when another tree fell onto it. I am carving this into a spoon with just hand tools. Follow along and see how it goes. I didn't get to finish it in this video as I was only...
Yew Cup
Join me as I show you how I made this Yew cup, urn, goblet or whatever you prefer to call it from a bit of fire wood I rescued. I have never made anything like this before so it was a first for me. But I made some basic mistakes making it. I managed to overcome them and it all worked out well in the end. I deliberated a bit to about the shape and if I was happy with it. When you have made somet...

Red Oak Bowl Part 1
Todays video is about a bowl that I turned from a bit of green Red Oak that got blown over in the wind at work. A very kind tree surgeon cut a section off for me and the rest is in the video. The project is going to be in two parts. I will endeavor to get the second part of this project edited and posted this weekend for you to enjoy. I have done a new intro for my videos, what do you think? I ...
Mini Greenhouse project
Spring is in the air. The birds are singing, trees blooming and the daffodils are a riot of colour. So what better time to start thinking about planting seeds and growing them for the summer. What about though if you don't have a greenhouse? What about if your wife does not entertain the thought of lots of seed trays on a sunny window cill? What can you do? How about making your own mini greenh...

    What wood did You use?

Abonniert. Die Fixation am Werktisch ist genial. Und Eibe schaut einfach Immer gut aus. Mein Lieblingsholz.

Thank You for sharing. Clever Idea with the excenter. After 1 Year: do you use it still in the same version?
