APEX ATTACK 2GR MR2 Build Breakdown 2024
It's been a year, I'm sorry.
I haven't updated the blog or website (apex-attack.com) in a year. A young family, budding career, and everything else life throws at you has gotten in the way. BUT, the passion for track focused driving is higher than ever. I have been continuously developing the car into what I think is one of the best track MR2s built.

Finally made it to a Cali track! Was able to put down a respectable 1:20.6 during the Ongrid Motorsports Meetup. Good enough for 2nd place overall. Not super happy with this lap, looks like there was an easy 1:19 possible with better hairpin exits instead of wheelspin city. More to accomplish next time. New Lap Record for the Toyota MR2 Chassis! 1:43.808 Had to dig deep for this lap and it was a pretty good one (besides the mis shift into the thumb). Hot (75 ambient) 3pm session was last timed session for Ongrid Time Attack event 6/8/24. It's funny how tame a fast-ish lap can look. This was supposed to be a banker lap, but ended up being my fastest of the event. As you can tell, I was fighting the tires, it seems I was running out of bite (and heat cycles). There's a few passes and early braking, my predictive timing wasn't even working that session yet. What was once a super intimidating track to me is now becoming one of my favorite challenges. After a five year hiatus I ran a few sessions here last year to test the car before GTA Ridge. After finally breaking into the 1:49s on street tires (A052) I tried out my scrubbed in A7s for a few laps. Grip was outstanding. This somewhat leisurely lap came in at 1:48.3. Car is a 2gr V6 powered SW20 MR2. Wilhelm koni coilovers, big brake kit, and basic homemade aero.

My first time running Maryhill Hillclimb, and had a helluva time! Scary and fun, this road has it all. Sw20 MR2 with a 3.5l V6 (2gr). hey mike. may i ask how much extra clearance is offered by the madpsi front fenders? ive got flares that add about an inch and its not quite enough for my ridiculous 275/35 front tyre setup

The heat pattern on the rear rotor tells me that you could use a heavier rotor as that one is collapsing

It's not actually brake bias if you adjust it with prop.valve. For real BB 2 separate master cylinders needed. Nice car.
Prop valve is, in fact, brake bias.
Kinda, but not exactly. What you adjust with prop valve is knee point at what pressure flow will start to be limited. Until this point bias will be 50%. True bias is adjusted with F/R master cylinders ratio.

Very cool! it's good to see the breakdown of all your work. Question: Did you notice the difference in shifting times witht eh E350 vs the old E153?
@@mrkazman seems about the same. But the s350 is lighter and much cheaper.
@mikereed1231 ah. I've really started to notice my E153 locks me out of the next gear for a while before I can slot it in, and considering the lightweight flywheel etc. I'm running, I thought perhaps it's taking a while for the transmission to spin up or down to new speeds
how'd you make those jack points? those are pretty rad

@mikereed1231 i need to replicate these. Just did a splitter and skirts on my car and jacking it up is now very difficult

Excellent. Those missing underbody strakes remind me of the TH-cam video I saw about the Lucid Air Sapphire. It’s a long video, but about a half hour into the video their head of aerodynamics (a former F1 engineer) gives a tour of the underbody. It has two big macaroni-shaped fences that push air outboard to behind the front tires and two at the rear that do something similar. The front pair trips vortices that flow along the length of the underbody to act as virtual fences, plus increase crosswind stability. The rear pair protect against tire squirt so the rear diffuser can work harder. The other new trend with aero is Porsche and Ferrari using aggressive front diffusers. Porsche introduced the trick of a front DRS system for active aero. Ferrari’s flagship uses a triple element (!!!!) front diffuser. Since you have a front splitter and ducted hood…you’ve already got most of the components of the system. This is oversimplified, but you’d basically connect the bottom of the front diffuser to the hood vent.
You should replace the little triangle on the cat with the outline of a cat's head.
Did you cut and fit up the cage yourself, too? Or was it a weld-in kit?
@@grippgoat little of both. Bought a kit but abandoned it for the front half of it and built my own.
I stil find the sw20 better looking than modern sports cars including the emira.... When I get mine out of storage ( I live in apt :/ ) I always look at it with respect and love... No other car has ever made me feel that way.
