My Do-It-Yourself videos are the main attraction here. I try to fix everything myself, but I usually look up the job on TH-cam first to learn from others. If I don't find something on a specific job, I post my own to fill the void. The Chillhowie Cabin videos are fun for anyone interested in building off-grid in the mountains.
Chilhowie Cabin Adventure, October 24
Ironically, Hurricanes Helene and Milton messed up my annual big October trip to Chilhowie. We were spared any significant damage, but Helene dumped enough rain to pour into the upper part of my foundation, and Milton stranded me in Florida during four perfect weather working days in Virgina. By the time I could get there, the temperatures were too low to do concrete work, so I was unable to frame in the northeastern corner of the building. I added an extension to the trail to bypass a steep corner, put in some insulation, and milled a couple big pieces of lumber during the few days I had left.

The Chilhowie Cabin adventure continues. After two other planned trips got cancelled due to rain earlier this year, this trip was a three-day rescue mission to stave off nature's tenacious reclamation of the land, some love for the tractor and an addition to the foundation.
Suzuki Carry part 6, Assembling the Front End
มุมมอง 1539 หลายเดือนก่อน
Part 6 in a series of videos on repairing or replacing the major right front steering and suspension components of a 1998 Suzuki S Carry, including the right front seal, the front axle shaft, suspension arm, tie rod, knuckle, and brakes. I hit a surprise when I discovered that the mounting bracket for the caliper had been put in backwards. Much easier work than the tear down and rebuilding the ...

Suzuki Crusty Caliper Rebuild
มุมมอง 3410 หลายเดือนก่อน
Part 4 in a series on rebuilding the front end of a 1998 Suzuki S Carry. In this video, I rebuild a crusty caliper which had a frozen piston, a frozen slide pin, and a backwards mounting bracket. I never took the slide pin out of the bracket during the rebuild. It bothered me intuitively, but I didn't figure out it was backwards until I tried to put in the new pads and mount it on the spindle/k...
Suzuki S Carry Oil Leak
มุมมอง 188ปีที่แล้ว
My first impression was that the leak was coming from the crank shaft and/or cam shaft seals, but the fix turned out to be a worn joint at the friction fit dipstick housing. There's a good video on replacing the seals by Maninoy White (in Tagalog?), but I decided to add this one when I found the source of the leak.

Garage door won't "cold lift."

About 8 months after installing a new Genie 2055 garage door opener, the door started getting sluggish then failing to lift on "cold lifts," even though everything worked fine once it "warmed up." The video includes several failed attempts during trouble shooting and ineffective "fixes" after consulting the Genie helpline, including adjusting travel limits and lift force. My theory is that the ...

Self-propelled converted to push mower in 10 minutes.
มุมมอง 8K2 ปีที่แล้ว
It only takes about 10 minutes to convert a Craftsman self-propelled mower to a push mower using simple tools. I found a couple other videos on this that made it look complicated, but when I saw how easy this conversion is, I decided I should post this. I'd already cut the belt with a chop saw and removed the left gear before I decided to make the movie, but the process is the same on both side...
Damage Control at the Cabin
มุมมอง 1532 ปีที่แล้ว
Super heavy rain caused a washout and overgrowth, the insects are moving in, and my tractor caught on fire. The first day back at the cabin was largely spent on damage control before getting the siding on the east end as our Chilhowie Cabin Adventure continues.

Wow, that was a PITA, much like most of my projects turn out. In my case, it wasn't a leak, but the faucet would not shut off. I found the Moen website to be particularly unhelpful. They have an exploded parts diagram for my T951CP faucet that cuts off below tub level. It seems the part numbers for the cartridge (1248) and extension kit (106378) are a closely guarded secret. Finally found the same diagram (in full) on another site. And of course, none of the 3 big box stores in town stock the removal tool.
I just did a make over for an old toilet today. This is a great video describing a common issue. Call a good plumbing parts store in your area to get the right kit. My kit had the tank seal, the bolts, washers, 4 nice plastic nuts, and 2 black spacers. Made the job a breeze.
Robert: at 1:04 you show a hose disconnected from the metal elbow. This hose actually runs right past the PCV and you can access this through the passenger wheel well. Did you replace this hose? If so, do you have the part number from Nissan?
I used the original hose, just pushed it over the "ridge" on the elbow and put a band clamp on it to seal the hose over the little hole in that space. Obviously to correct fix for this is to replace the rusted elbow completely, but it's a much bigger job. I referred to another guy who did it in my description. Hope you found a solution.
Cool!!!
I have to replace fix a faucet like this Saturday and don’t really want to fix it after see this video. Great video by the way.
THANK YOU
Your amazing
I wish... but I did grow up on a farm where just did everything.
Awsome! Looks like you are still having fun sorting out design elements in your construction project. Can’t wait to see what happens next!
Why go through all that? just replace the idler pulley and the hydraulic piston without removing the plate at the pivot point bolt which you cut... it's made to be serviced without removing the backing plate.
is the fuel need to mix 2t?
Did u caulk it?
Love the update! Was curious how it faired.
Thank you this helped me
I have a lawn business, and need a simple push mower with a big engine, which noone offers.Knowing the self propel wont last for the number of yards I cut, this is my solution, disable the drive and gears, and I have what I need.Americans are so lazy, cant push a lawnmower once a week.I am 60 and push mow the majority of my 95 customers.
Easiest way to do this job is by removing the power steering pump, but it is still a right fit I just removed the power steering pump from the mount and I left all the lines attached and u are able to drop a wrench into the hose clamps to remove the hose
What a nitemare
Too smart to be idiot. Give up self propelled for human strength.
KORKY No. 464FR
KORKY Not Kirby !!!!!
I have an old Gerber. Was installed in 1994. I got a Kirby Gasket Kit. (No. 464FR). Says on the package “Fits 2-piece toilets, Including Gerber” It works. My toilet is not leaking But I don’t know for sure it’s the same Gerber as what you guys have…
KORKY !!!!!! Not Kirby.
It's not typically that bad a job. I'm not sure why yours was so corroded. I replaced my cartridges in about 20 minutes.
What a great job
Does the water supply to the house need to be turned off to do this?
Yes, unless you have some other shut off available to the tub. The faucet is the only thing keeping water under pressure from pouring out of the pipe to your tub.
I'm facing the same problem where do I find the gerber gasket part 99-582 please and thank you
I got it from a local plumbing parts shop in Melbourne FL, and you can probably find a local supplier where you are. You won't get them at HD or Lowes. If you google it, there are a lot of sellers online.
@@roberthare2251 Thank you
OMG I had the same problem with an old Gerber. I went through a couple of new gaskets before watching this video. I'll get the proper gasket and follow up. Thanks so much!!
Why would you not need self propell😊
Because I can push it, it was free, and I didn't want to pay more than the mower was worth to repair the self-propelled function.
Because some people arent lazy.
@user-sq1rf9ev6y bro I’m a kid and I have a huge hill so I need self propell
What is the part number of the actual Moen faucet cartridge????
We do not have the aerator that goes inside - cannot find the size. Would you happen to know? That would be sooo helpful!
Waste of time
For people with 21-377 or similar toilets, the part is 99-591. It seems Gerber likes being "different".
This video is useless, you didn't fix the problem.
Yes and no. The oiler wasn't working at all when I tore it apart and cleaned it out, and the oiler started working again. It still has a small leak which I just live with, and I've put a lot of milage on it since. It wasn't the fix I was looking for, but it worked good enough for my needs.
What about the faucet leak?
The new valves seem much easier. But, cutting an access panel through the tile would be a big mess. I could cut away the plywood subfloor from inside the basement
I got bit by this problem this weekend. :( But actually for me, the gasket is too large to fit in the hole in the tank. It's like it's not tapered enough, not narrow enough on that end.
Presumably the tensioner assembly is intended to be able to pivot freely around the 14mm bolt (ie to keep the belt correctly tensioned whilst the engine is running for the life of the belt) ? or is the assembly supposed to be fixed in position by tightening down on the 14mm bolt? I tried to fit a new belt but applying large amount of torque to the 19mm part as per instructions I'm finding the tensioner won't budge as if the assembly is seized in place.
When I did mine, I had to use a cheater bar to get the tensioner compress . Search youtube for this video: How works Toyota Rav-4 VVT-i drive belt tensioner. Years 2000 to 2010. "TH-cam didn't let me post a direct link".
@@DT-ns9hb Thanks for the reply. I tried using an extended 'US Pro Serpentine Belt Tool' and applied so much clockwise torque to the 19mm part of the tensioner that damage occurred to the tool. I will try again and attempt to loosen the other (14mm) bolts first. I'm trying to understand whether or not the casting is supposed to pivot freely ie maintain correct tension of the belt while the engine is running.
@@Beesa10 The whole assembly is pivoting at the top bolt and the bottom 14mm. When I had the new tensioner, I checked both places where the bolts goes through, I can rotated it with just fingers. Maybe you got a defective tensioner assembly?
@@DT-ns9hb Peter Finn's video shows him doing a last step of tightening the top 14mm bolt enough to bind/prevent any further movement of the tensioner arm after the belt is fitted which doesn't seem quite right(?), probably my tensioner has been locked in position the same way for a long time and might explain why the last belt broke after ~35k miles. Possibly the assembly has just gone bad, it's over 20 years old.
@@DT-ns9hb I managed to get the new belt on. My 14mm bolt at the top left (pivot point) was extremely tight/seized up and preventing the assembly from moving. It took a 6 point ring spanner with steel tube extension, WD40 (and so much torque I was afraid to break the bolt) to finally free it. Then just followed the procedure with a 19mm socket from above to torque the assembly clockwise and compress the tensioner spring.
What is the “S” Carry?
Thanks we have two of these 28-790 toilets from the 90’s. We have had problems trying to find right gasket.
Looks like I won't be doing that with a 6x3
How do you know what model number faucet you have to order a replacement cartridge?
The bathroom had an old Gerber and the wall is destroyed because of the wrong seal ring. I bought the place and never knew it was continuing leaking. I am replacing the wall and almost put "an extra thick ring" to fix the leak. You have saved me hundred or thousands of dollars. Thank you so much.
Did a water pump, belt tensioner bottom hos on a 2004 Remove the harmonic balancer and the "shock absorber/extender" from the old while its on the car The assembly can be removed without cutting the bolt. Same for the install Remove the "extender/shock absorber", install the assembly with long bolt already in assembly Once in place and tightened install the extender /shock absorber" Install harmonic balancer Fighting the lower hose into position was almost harder than the above Mike
what bolt size do you remember? metric 10?
Take the cut bolt with you to match it up with the new one - mine was a size 10 metric (diameter) and 80 mm long. I believe the original was 90 mm. over 1 year and 15,000 miles later all is well.
@roberthare2251 perfect. I think you're right on the 90mm original but the one i got in was m10 x 1.25 x 80mm
Men and their chainsaws. Love it!
I don't know if I'm ready for the "as good as the next guy" claim by the guy I hired to take down a dying tree threatening the cabin site three years ago, but I've got more courage now.
Excellent! I also have faith in your abilities…now. 😂
Hello, thanks so much for this video, recently bought a second hand 2005 Rav4 this April 2023. Bought it with a Phinning noise, could it be the same issue? Might need to replace the tension pulley?
Thanks for the video… what a chore this job was on a routine serpentine belt change. Ended up cutting my bolt tonight and thought about just drilling through the wheelwell to sneak the bolt in that way. May try your approach first though
Thanks for the video. I thought this problem only existed for the 2004.

Nice! Love a good summer downpour in the mountains. Bet that sounded great INSIDE the building.
Yep, really loud inside with the sheeting still exposed and no insulation. But that kind of rain is rather magical when you are surrounded by all the green foliage and tall trees.
