Once proud members of the Soviet Navy, now nothing but scrap. This iscwhat happened to most of the Soviet Navy when their government collapsed and they no longer had the money to operate their huge armed forces.

When I was in the Navy, that Akula class sub was something to be feared. Seeing one rotting away like that doesn't seem like a fitting end.

This may be propaganda. Copper smelters produce sludge depending on the type of copper ore and the climate. In a dry climate it would not be as visible.

Submarine with triple decks...

Did a check on Google Earth around Southern Ukraine. found at 4 subs, 2 were around 240 Feet. One sitting in Dry-dock.

The Russian submarine fleet is being relaunched and has subs that took the secrets given them by their spy Aldrich Ames for peanuts to make them deadly and quiet, just like modern U.S. boats. Oil money pays for a lot. I welcome the new Russian fleet. Otherwise another George W Bush type might want another unnecessary war, the Russian submarine fleet will now give such an imbecile a 'moment of pause'.

many of the images of the Subs are or can be found on line just do a search for Soviet Subs there pretty much all abandoned diesel subs in Vladivostok, Russia near the Russian Navy Base there.

I think the only things of any value in the graveyard is the steel from their hulls

If I recall those Akula hunter killers were cooled by liquid boron. If it the temperature got too low, then it would solidify in the system, and then the reactor wold go critical. I assume these still have their nuclear cores on board - contaminating the seas.

So sad. so much money and recources wasted on cold war armaments by both sides. We could have used that money and technology to have built a permanent moonbase or sent humans to Mars. Such a pity!

Hah, i can recognise some of wrecks :D I lived near in childhood. Most of these photos made on the Kola peninsula, not far from Gadzhiyevo city , the bay "Nezametnaya". This place is in border zone, so its really hard to visit it.

It would be a trip to go through some of these.......... but of course, with half of them your hair would be falling out by the time you left it. Russians were notorious for skimping on shielding in deference to providing larger reactors, using prototype liquid metal cooling systems that occasionally solidified when a reactor scrammed, and their welding standards were generally not up to Western standards. Many of those subs were scrapped because welds gave in critical situations, flooding the engineering spaces with lethal doses of radiation.

To eveyone who keeps saying bad things about the russian navy well guess what? right back at you. These are ww2 subs or cold war subs that failed in service.
