We did have GMRS radios, most of the guiding was just done the old fashioned way... A LOUD voice!

That isscary how all of the poles are bending. I would definitely get away from them.
You could see multiple power flashes! Wasn't a good idea to continue driving on a road with high-transmission poles on the side.

I live two hours out from the border crossing into Detroit, and this was just downright insane! I've been around nineteen years and i've not once seen anything like this. More and more people are uploading footage of this derecho. It was insane!
That kind of radio doesn't work good in metal surroundings, car is becoming faraday cage and it's blocking signals, if you test it next time try to go out off the car;)
Good testing. I like these RT-49. They have decent features and powered by 3 AA is a bonus. I've got plenty of Eneloops so that will be great having extra batteries that are common and easy to replace. I'm guessing in a rural area with not too much thick forest you probably get 2km distance.
perfect for emgency situations, easy to use good features, not expecting to talk from a 1-3 mile distance. The rechargeable batteries can be replaced by something better off amazon. Remember these batteries usually have 800-1000 life-time recharge cycle . So you should be good .
