What trader insurance do you have? I’m struggling to get insurance as I have no experience in trading cars
Got to hand it to you Steven you know your stuff
Make more videos, I get your busy but come on man get another one out on the side. Could even just be a little update, get it done
were you given handouts to start out this venture? Did u start selling one car at a time from home?
@lmr9512 I bought my first sales car when I was 19, I was working nights for Parcel Force (Royal Mail) while putting myself through university (I come from a under privileged background), one of the drivers had an old Land Rover series 3 in the staff carpark, he had been trying to sell it in the yellow free ads (before internet) for months for £200 but didn't even get a call. One night the manager came and said the big bosses were coming to visit the depot the next day and everyone had to clean the place, plus this Land Rover had to go that night. The driver had nowhere to store it and asked me if I wanted to buy it, he said it had £50 a diesel in it and to make him an offer, so I gave him £50 for it, drove it home and the next day I put it up for sale for £900 in the same yellow paper that he had, I had something like 15 calls on it and within twenty Four hours someone came and gave me £800 cash for it. I took that £800 and bought another car and that's how I started, selling one at a time, I had no storage and wasn't registered as a trader or even knew what I was doing. A short time later my dad passed away and I had to make money while continuing my education, I worked evenings in a local hotel, delivered curries on the weekends, and sold cars so I could give my mum some money. I grafted for everything, and lost it all twice, but cars have always been my back up income. If anything, my journey with cars proves that you can start with very little, in difficult circumstances, and make money.
@@Stevesautos amazing thanks for sharing and god bless
hi Steve loving the down to earth videos, I'm just in the process of being a motor trader ,i used to do from my house and drive 25 yr ago I'm just asking do you buy most of your cars from auction, and also dealer trade ins around the back of forecourts etc ,keep up the good work cheers James
Hi James, thanks for that comment, I appreciate it. Yes mate, that's exactly where I buy the cars from, as many as I can from main dealer part exchange to avoid auction fees on both sides. Best of luck.
Thank you so much for your quick reply, keep up the great videos Steve many thanks James
You forgot the VAT and tax on the income
No I didn't, you pay tax at the end of the year based on the total profits from all vehicles, if you take 100% of the profit made on your first car and buy another car, you don't pay tax on stock. And I also didn't forget VAT, you won't be VAT registered when you first start out, you need to turn over £90K before you need to register for VAT.
What about motor trade insurance and trade plates when you starting out.. how can you do it?
check out my other video on my channel, it will answer that question for you.

You should get your car checked out. I have never had the problems you describe.
Not my car buddy, it was a dealer loan to make the video when it was new.
@@Stevesautos Fair enough. This car was clearly a lemon.
Try blowing the exterior faded black plastics with a heat gun, brings them up like new and saves money on conditioners.
But fades within a few months as your exposing the pours to the elements, with the proper treatment it can be a long term solution.
I just watched you do the most ordinary wheel paint job I've ever seen on one of your vids. Banging on about saving money. Have you suddenly got a concious now?
@@Stevesautos oh and you forgot to add the price of rear springs and front brake pads to your cost margin.
Painted wheels aren't going to fade in a few months are they. An ordinary paint job, on an ordinary car, that sold for an ordinary price. I think you mean conscience, genius. Conscious (concious I'm guessing) means awake and responding.
*Conscience
Sorry mate but this OBD scanner is rubbish doesn't show any faults. Better one can be around £300.
Which one are you talking about? The hand held is just for auctions so is cheap and cheerful, the bigger one runs all different kinds of software, same as a branded dealership uses and was about £1300 with licences. This channel is all about starting out, and guys don't have £300 to spend of an OBD.
I just register my company as a car trader its limited company i am very new in this business leave my job and now looking for good experience in auto industry your video ,how to start a motor trade business is very helpful and if you have your company name and address to meet you in person for getting more information it would be a great help for me because i trust your info is the most authentic info i got on youtube
Love your content steven, just wish there was more of it. I'm hoping to get into flipping cars as a side gig but I dont have anywhere to work on them... welsh valley things. Do you have any recommendations?
Thanks mate, I'm working on more content, I'm so busy I struggle to get it all recorded and edited, but I am working on it. I actually started in Newport, so not far from you, from a terraced house, I made sure I only bought the cheap to-tax cars so I could legally keep them on the road, as long as you tell your insurance company you can do it legally. I had one car at a time in the beginning and then when I had more vehicles I would ask friends, family, and even neighbors who had some off-road parking if I could use their drive, whenever I sold a car I would buy them a bottle of wine or something as a thank you. There's always a way, if you're going to start, now is a great time, summer is here so lighter nights and better weather to get them cleaned. Best of luck, you can do it.
Dankeschön! Das hat uns sehr geholfen! Herzliche Grüße aus Deutschland 🎉
Gern geschehen. Es freut mich, dass ich helfen konnte.
Cracking video, straight to point. Top man 🤙🏻
You're THE MAN!!! 💪🏼🫅🏻
Hi mate I’ve got a question if there’s anywhere I could message you privately thanks.
Great and very informative videos mate. Personally I wouldn't name who's ran into me.
It's people like this guy who are the reason all our insurance premiums go up, he ran in to the back of me, took responsibility and then a few days later claimed I reversed in to him, that could have cost me my no claims and my premium going up next year. What it actually did was cost the insurance company to investigate, plus a hire car for every day they they took to prove it. I think people who do this should be named and shamed, especially as my insurance company proved he was in the wrong. I personally think people who lie in these situations should be prosecuted.
I would of bought it took a chance if it was too far gone just scrap and take the small hit, he who dares wins lol
super helpful, you deserve 1 million subs !!
Cheers, man.
Nice one, good to see your video popup in my feed.
Cheers buddy.
Hey Steven thanks for the video Is there a website that lets you determine the trade price for cars? Also why are cars priced at £1995 for example? Why not £2000? Cheers and thanks again the video!
hey @luqmankhan9631 There's Glass guide and CAP HPI, which can give you an idea of trade value and retail value, but you need to use your common sense, the car condition will adjust the price. In reality, you don't need to subscribe to these as most auctions will tell you the trade value in the catalog, but as with everything it isn't that simple. I'm trying to put out a video every two weeks at the moment and I have been asked this question several times before, I will make this video for you guys by the end of the month, it will be a walk-through of how I price cars up, and you can take from that what you will.
@@Stevesautos Thank you for the answer! And yes a video on this would be extremely useful! Again thank you for being honest and upfront with us :) Looking forward to future uploads

Really good video 🙂 been thinking about starting this myself. Timing chain sounds a little stretched but still a cheap car for somebody 😊
Nice video, you can just pop up every 6 months 😂 need to keep the vids coming. Is car trading your full time job?
Hey Adriane I've been trading since I was 17, If I did it full time I would lose my passion for it, so very much a hobby and provides a nice second income from my driveway (that most would consider a full time income), I have another business that keeps me extremely busy.
U were lucky it went thru mot
Why, I did everything it needed.
Merci pour la vidéo des explications ! Grâce à vous on a pu fixer le siège en Isofix 👍
Great content, what was your race car?
excellent video... very well explained
Glad you liked it
Mate this was exactly what I needed, been in the trade 13 years working at VW on sales, I've had a 4 year sabbatical and wanted to get back into but on my own rather than working looong hours at a main dealer, any tips on where to source stock from? Thanks
@@garethwinnard4876 Hi Garath, the best place is always to buy main dealer part-ex if you can, sounds like you may have some connections already to buy direct and skip the auction fees. Otherwise, the auctions, BCA is still the best. I wish you luck, mate.
Hi Steve, this information is really helpful tysm for that. Can you please tell as a side income where i can source the stock from? Auction ??
Auction yes, also go and speak with the main dealers, they will often let you buy the part ex cars instead of paying auction fees.
Do you put the logbook in your company name?
No, I'm registered as a trader so the logbook never gets sent off, you can either send off the trade slip on the logbook or register it online as in trade. This way the DVLA know you have the vehicle but it does not add any owners to the logbook.
Looking to get into the car trade and this was a great informative video
Glad it was helpful!
You saved my life ! Thank you so much 🙂🙂🙂🍻
You're welcome 😊
Thank you so much! My 2 boys are 1 year now and it's time to get a new baby seat... 90% are Isofix and I hated the idea to cut holes in there.
Glad it helped!
The best video on youtube about selling cars and setup up the bussines!! Thank you Steve for very interesting information. I start looking for trade insurance, I hope I can get one. Trading mainly from home. Is there any chance you could share some knowledge about the warranty for the cars you selling under ltd company? I'm a bit concerned when you selling cars as a sole trader or ltd company how much warranty should I provide with the car ? I really would like to be honest with the people and build healthy and friendly relationship. Thanks in advance. Btw. Are you available outside youtube to talk about it and help with sime questions ? Im happy to pay fir your time 😊
Hi Steve, love the videos and the knowledge you give to us guys looking to start out in the motor trade, thank you so much! I have two quick questions if thats okay 1. Where/How do you go about finding trade prices for cars, is there a best website? 2. Why are cars priced at £...95? Why would you price a car at £995 rather than £1000? Looking forward to seeing more of your honest videos about the industry!
BTW - do you still have the C-Max? If so are you getting water in the boot? It’s a problem on mine that I keep thinking I’ve got fixed but it comes back. Any tips appreciated!
Thanks - really useful to know!
tried it ,not that easy , should have had you tube back then could have done that
I’m struggling to get trade insurance. Most insurers need proof of trading for a year ie receipts of buying and selling cars. I’ve bought and sold a few cars through face book but never thought about providing receipts. Any advice or recommended insurers appreciated
Very good video, clears everything up! Thanks mate
Very helpful video
What if you can’t get trade insurance due to being under 25 yet have a LTD set up ready to go?
cant believe you were so anal over the condition of those plates mate but turned a blind eye to the leather gear gaitor and handbrake shroud.
lol, someone will fall in love with the car from the outside, it's a simple case of expectation vs profit, gear gaitor was about £15, for a more expensive car then yes I would have changed it, it wasn't a showroom condition car so I don't think it needed any extra spending on it. But, yes I am anal about number plates lol
@@Stevesautos unless they get advised as deteriorated on mot i never bother with the cars i flip.stuff like leather coming off gaitors or handbrake shrouds yes as you can see them when sat in the car.you cant see a number plate from inside car.keep up the good work and flipping them over
Hi Steve, was wondering if you had instagram or any other social media platforms to contact you on? I'm just getting started on the car flipping and would appreciate reaching out 😊
Missed the expenses for cleaning products.
Where is your free download for vat spread sheet thanks
Hi Steve, love your videos. Please continue and make more 👍🏼. I've got a question about driveway traders insurance. I've been phoning around to get quotes and its a bit of a minefield. Please could you recommend any companies / brokers. Many thanks and Merry Christmas.
@stephenwilliams2913 there are only a handful of companies that will touch drive way traders, I changed in December from Tradex to AXA, I've been with Tradex for 5 years but they put the price up over £400, where AXA upped the value of my stock to £7500 with an unlimited number of cars. It is a mind field which doesn't make sense to anybody.
@Stevesautos Many thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it. Will give AXA a ring in the New Year.
This is a gem of a video 😂
mate as a profession alloy wheel refurbishment company that can do both paint and powder coating wheel refurbs that job you done on it was absolutely awful my eyes were bleeding watching this, sorry to be negative about it
You can be as negative as you like, you clearly didn't listen to a word I said. I'm not an alloy wheel professional and I don't claim to be, this was a budget car with very little profit in it, having them professionally done would have cost money and added no value what so ever to the vehicle in this price band, I was covering up shoddy work that someone else had done to make the car presentable for a quick sale at a budget price. On higher end cars I use guys like you literally all the time.
@@Stevesautos oh I listened alright and I will point out a bodged job regardless of how little profit is in a car sale, those wheels could of been made to look like new for £30 material costs had you took the time to research how to do wheels properly. I recommend looking up this youtube channel " CVR POV " which will show you how to do a decent job on spraying wheels for very little money and doing other stuff to car bodywork which would come in handy if you are selling cars. Probably cost £30 in materials to do a proper job once you spent a little bit of time practicing. Also never spray wheels while on the car makes the faces look new but behind the spokes still look like crap highly noticeable. Spraying the faces while wheel is off the car the paint flicks down the inside barrel giving the clean appearance behind the spokes
@@glitchtheory6609 you listened alright yet one of the first things I said was don't put a comment saying I'm doing this wrong, yet here we are. For someone in the motor industry you clearly don't understand the key element, expectations, you're talking about taking each wheel off and spending £30 - £40 on materials, which is too much cost in labour and materials for a quick flip that went out just above trade value to a guy that wanted it to drive to work and park it in a steel works car park all day. I understand you are a professional, but that isn't what I was going for, you need to manage the expectations of the buyer and for a car that cheap the expectations are very low for the price they paid. The only person that wasn't happy about this whole thing is you, and you are neither the buyer or the seller. Listen to what we were trying to achieve before making a comment, this channel is about quick flips for cheap cars, not restoring everything to forecourt display.
@@Stevesautos Yea yea yea blah blah blah,,, I get it low effort low reward LOL best of luck sharpening your skill set for selling cars. Would be funny to see you doing this method and finding out what a fry up is while doing your rattle tin wizard skills
@@glitchtheory6609 Been selling cars for 25 years pal, when your brain can contemplate what profit vs expectation is, come back and share your thoughts, until then pipe down in the cheap seats.
