How to Manage Phone Calls Home as a Teacher // Difficult Conversation Tips
www.heymiss.com.au **Subscribe to learn more tips and strategies supporting you to thrive in the classroom and teach with impact**
As a beginning #Teacher having difficult conversations with parents can be slightly overwhelming. The good thing is that there are some simple tips to help manage this, and I share more in this video.
This is actually a strategy that was shared with me by one of my incredible clients. And I’ve used it a number of times to help guide some really important #conversations.
Whether you use it when you’re calling home about student #behaviour or in a parent-teacher interview or even if it’s with a colleague or someone from your leadership team; it can really help to keep the dialogue focused without getting caught up in too much emotion.
If you are someone who gets sidetracked by peoples’ stories, you often have little energy left to actually help them. To really be of service. When there is a gentle space between you and them, you’ll actually be in a better position to help.
All you have to do is SET your boundary.
S - State the SITUATION. Explain that ‘this’ is what has been happening and stick to the facts here. Then move onto…
E - By showing a bit of EMPATHY. Let them know you can see how it would feel from their perspective. But don’t get stuck here. You have to move on to…
T - The TRUTH of the matter is that ‘this’ needs to happen in order for us to move forward. This is the most important step because it allows you to set an action and work towards a desired goal that is best for everyone.
This gives you a really simple structure to follow where you can stay connected with whoever you are talking to while at the same time working towards a better outcome.
I trust it will take out some of the anxiety when it comes to having those important discussions. Let me know how it works out for you and be sure to hit me up if you have any other questions.
